gpl tragedy!!!!

Hi all,

OK, you've all heard this 100 times before I bet but I can't seem to get GPL
to run under win2k at all. Now before you all say, "That'll teach you to use
a business OS!" I must point out that there are people out there that seem
to be able to run this combo and all my other games (Homeworld, Simcity
3000, Half-Life, Unreal Tournament) run just fine.

Anyway, down to the point in hand. When installing the game I get the
"cannot install wininet.dll" error. Ignoring this error and trying to run
the game results being dumped back to the desktop after the loading screen
appears. A similar problem occurred under Win98 I believe, and there are
guides out there to resolve the it. Unfortunately, they only apply to the
GPL demo (at least the ones I can find do). :(

My system is a PIII 450 (oc'ed to 504, yes I did try restoring normal clock
settings), 256MB RAM, V3-2000 with latest win2k drivers off 3dfx's site (not
the ones that came with the OS) and Windows 2000 Pro.

Can anyone help, I've hunted hi and lo to find an answer to this and been
unsuccessful! I'm going spare not being able to run this game! :)

Thanks in advance,

Andrew

dual boot might be your only option.

No, I think you should try doing some more homework on your side.  I have
GPL, and I have windows 2000 final installed, clean hd format win2000
install.  Runs gpl better like never before here.  So, yes, it does work
fine on windows 2000.  Umm, the install error by far has nothing to do with
windows 200 that you are explaining, but instead, something like a scratch
possibly on your cd or something similar to that, bad cd reads, or even
unable to overwrite a 2000 file, don't know what the issue is, but keep
trying at it.

I have an idea of what the problem is, something is running wininet.dll,
thus the install will fail as it can't copy it over. Now to find out what
the problem is. Are you running a network by any chance? I reckon that's
what my problem is at the moment.

even worse tragedy after formatting, i pulled out the GPL cd for a fresh
install, and its cracked, I must have stepped on it. DOH! Off to EB or
somewhere that has it cheap.

I had the same problem when I tried GPL on W2k.

There are people here who are running GPL on W2k... but I think they
installed 2k over 95/98, so didn't have to run the GPL installer.  I
wouldn't like to do it this way, as I'd prefer a clean install of 2k.

Does Win2000 have a safe boot mode? You could try installing it from
there, then after it installs, reboot and see if it runs. Might work,
might not!

Hi Andrew

Dont know if I`m getting into this thread late. If the following has been
offered you previously, apologies.
Anyway, this is how I got GPL to run on W2K. ( And it runs just as well as
it runs on W98/SE ).

1- Install GPL... ignore wininet.dll message and any following
messages/warnings.
( If I remember correctly you get one about Direct X version, and one about
avi playback ).

2- After install you will find a GPL update icon on your start menu. Run it
and update the game.

3- Download and install the 1.2 patch.

4- Down load and install the GPL glide patch ( Unofficial 3dfx GPL Patch ),
which consists of :
Glide2x.dll
Glide.ini
Gplform.txt
Make sure you get the latest version. Mine is v1.0.0.6 - follow the
instructions carefully!

5- Run the game and enjoy. ( hopefully ) :-)

Sorry I cant give you the URL`s, but you may get the links from the web page
of Alison Hines, link follows.

Hope this helps - keep trying!!
