1.00 to 1.02 icr2 patch available on Hawaii- still has problems

That is, fortunately, a bug you can completely repair yourself. Just
do a "attrib -r cars95.dat" at the DOS prompt in the directory with
your cars (icr2\cars\cars95\). I think that is the command. Point is,
your cars95.dat file was made "read only" by the patch, so you need to
make it writeable.

Minor flaw- other than that, I think the patch is a winner.

Took forever to apply the patch on my system too- in retrospect, it
might have been better to use smartdrv before doing the patch- I don't
know for sure, but it sure seems the patch was written with lousy
disk-buffering. Hey, it is done, we have the patch.

1.00 to 1.02 icr2 patch available on Hawaii- still has problems

I downloaded the patch yesterday with much jiy. When I got home last
night, I set it running, and hit problems. 1st of all, it wouldn't
install the new qualifiying setups, because it couldn't find the oold
ones to delete (qualace, qualfast, qualeasy), and it then stopped with an
error message. So I thoiught I would try playing anyway. At first all
seemed fine I could drive around NAzereth without the backend flying
round, the little re light worked, and the rev counter didn't mess up. I
reaslised however that univbe hadn't been installed, so I went back to
setup, installe dunivbe, and went back to the game. I noticed straight
away that the rev light was on constantly. Then the rev coubter started
glitching, and then the rev light started flickering. At that point I
swore very loudly, and deleted ICR2 from my hard drive, I suspect it
could be monts before it goes back.

I'm not convinced this is the patch we have all been after, as there was
no file which listed the changes, and Rick said the patch was going to be
1.0.1, and this says 1.0.2. I think we need more info from Papy.

you lot test it first, I'm not wasting another 30 quid on a buggy program.

1.00 to 1.02 icr2 patch available on Hawaii- still has problems

The patch looked familiar to me when I ran it.... sure enough.   It is the same
utility that DESCENT v1.4 used when it passed out an upgrade in the same manner.
Yes, Smartdrv will greatly increase the speed at which it does it's work.

BTW, you can't blame Sierra or Papyrus too much for this one.   It doesn't look like
they wrote the utility.   They just used it and decided not to "re-invent the wheel"
Aren't you glad?   It would have taken 3 more months to get to us......

I haven't tried HUGE smartdrv caches, but didn't notice much improvement between
2MB and 6MB cache when I tested the Descent version.
Just don't run it with NO cache.... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

From the Software Company's view, there is a big plus to using it:  You only need
to send out the code that requires changing instead of whole files.
+ It lets you guarantee the program is already installed before applying the patch.
+ No one can get the patch and manipulate it into a running program.
+ The patch can fit on one floppy instead of "fixed" files taking up 3 to 4...

I found this bug to!...any idea what causes it??...and yeah, there are
others to.
After reinstalling the game and running the patch,I went back into a
saved race I was having at Michigan.
Upon selecting the saved race, the screen came up and I breathed a sigh
of relief....we moved off the line ( Iwas up front),and began following
the Pace car for the yellow warm up lap,and "poof!"...the pace car just
disappears.
I continued on,endded up passing it and got that message to "stay behind
the pace car" stuff, and then the whole system crashed!...Great!!
It may be just that I was running a previously saved race on the newer
patched version,so I'll have another go tonight and start a fresh race.
See what happens then,I guess.

: Okay, thanks to Cie Phillips the patch is available via the internet.
: It can be found at his homepage.  I have also including it in my
: homepage and via ftp.  Check the following URLs:

:       http://www.teleplex.net/cie/ICR100_2.ZIP
:       http://www.teleport.com/~mcarver/autosim.htm
:       ftp://ftp.teleport.com/users/mcarver/AutoSim/icr100_2.zip

I guess I was hit harder than I thought by the HandOfGod at Cleveland.
I coulda swore I updated my website to include the real patch
(icr100_2.zip).  Apparently I did not get the correct file updated on my
server.  If you experienced any trouble, I apologize.

1.00 to 1.02 icr2 patch available on Hawaii- still has problems

Since Sierra On-Line finally put the patch out on the internet my
webpage now points directly to the "official" 1.00 -> 1.02 patch.  Since
I was running out of disk space at my ISP, I have removed the file that
was reached by the direct ftp URL.  The last time I checked Sierra's web
page could not successfully access their own file.  Here are the direct
ftp URL's for the official patch:
    ftp://ftp.sierra.com/pub/sierra/patches/sports-sim/icr100_2.exe
    ftp://ftp.sierra.com/pub/sierra/patches/sports-sim/icr101_2.exe
The 1st URL is for the 1.00->1.02 patch and the 2nd is for those who
want to patch the latest DOS/Win95 release.

Again, I am sorry for any trouble I may have caused by my earlier
"brain-fade".

I'm confused... I downloaded it from your site a week or so ago, and
it seemed fine, and I think it did update me to 1.0.2. Are you saying
that actually it isn't the right patch? That could be exciting.

Thanks for all your efforts, and please let us know what you mean
exactly about this probably false-impression I have that there could
be a possible "wrong patch" out there.

Until the real patch surfaced on Hawaii, there was a "quick" fix
floating about.  This included actual files for about 4 version 1.01
files (INDYCAR.EXE, OBJECTS.DAT, ROLS.DAT, ???).  When Cie made the
patch  available at this site, I could have swore I updated my site to
include the "real" patch icr100_2.zip, however a couple of days later I
checked  and it still pointed to the "quick" fix.  The icr100_2.zip or
icr100_2.exe actually requires a full installation from the CD-ROM and
patches many files, including many track files and the cars95 files.  If
you went through this last process, then you have the real patch.

BTW:  Do you have a valid e-mail address?  All replies to the above
always bounce as undeliverable?

1.00 to 1.02 icr2 patch available on Hawaii- still has problems

by Michael Eskandari » Tue, 23 Jul 1996 04:00:00

Can someone help clear up something for me?  Last week (7/13/96) Cie Phillips posted
the URL to his web page for the 1.02 patch to ICR2 (that he copied from Hawaii).  The file name is icr100_2.zip.

I downloaded it and hadn't gotten around to installing it at home, then I saw that the
patch was on Sierra's site.  When I downloaded that version I noticed that the file
name was icr100_2.exe.

What's the difference between these two files.  Is the .exe version just a
self-extracting file?

What gives?  What did I miss?

To the best of my knowledge (based on reports from others), the only
difference is that the Sierra .exe version is self-extracting and
includes a README.BAT which will display the readme file that comes in
both versions.
