Hi!
Last night a friend of mine and me assembled a PC from spare parts
resulting in some sort of AMD K5-133 system with 32MB ram. The other
machine at this place is a P-200 with 80MB, so we thought we give it a
go over null modem playing GP2. Way back when we both had a P100 or
something it resulted in GP2 being playable over nullmodem in VGA
only, but boy was I suprised about the playability of this combo! Ok,
so I was playing on the slower machine and had to turn off some track
detail, but all in all it was great fun being able to finally play GP2
over serial cable in SVGA.
Then we went for a 10 lap race at Laguna Seca playing Indycar II which
we have done before with the old setup, and that too was great
fun. ICR2's physics model is still very good (ok, no wheel spin, no
flips, whatever), but there's nothing quite as satisfying from the old
days than going through the left hander just before uphill cork***
in fifth gear with that turbo howling!
So, after an evening of work it feels good to only have a T2 wheel to
lug around in order to be able to play racing games with two machines
as compared to complete setups as we used to do. I cannot wait for the
day when we'll assemble our next PC from spare sparts ten years from
now and give GPL II "a go" on this setup (hopefully the native Linux
version ;-)
Cheers,
Uwe
