3D glasses vs. Fresnel lens for racing

After reading some of the discussions here and then buying an 8 1/2 by
11 inch fresnel lens at Staples office suplies, I am seriously
thinking of ordering a large fresnel for my 20inch monitor.  I mostly
play driving sims (GPL mostly) but was wondering what others
experiences are with fresnels and/or with the 3D glasses.  It seems to
me that the 3D glasses are too dependant on just the right
software/hardware setup and that wearing them gets old.  Having played
with the small fresnel a bit, I find the depth of vision incredible,
and its like looking through an actual windshield (very very cool).
The only problem I have so far is that the edges of the picture are
somewhat blurry, but will this go away when I have a much larger
fresnel?  (and, ...to those who have done this....what size lens to
buy for a 20 inch mon.?).

If you have a monitor with super high refresh rates I would go for it.
140Hz is the minimum you will want to use at any resolution.  Nvidia put out
some good 3d stereo drivers for their video cards but they only work in Win
95 - ME.  Driving GPL with them looks pretty amazing but your fillrate needs
will double and processor use also jumps a lot when in stereo mode.  I wish
the FOV patch was out while I still had 98 installed would have looked good
IMO.

If you got an Nvidia video card then that's all it takes as far
as hardware goes. Nvidia driver has stereovision builtin with
an interface-software driver from its website. Racing in stereovision
will get you much more immersed, GPL, N4, Heat are all excellent in
stereovision. GPL graphic is dated but in stereo it still gives you the
wow factor, it's a whole new game with stereovision.

Bruce,

This fresnel approach has me intrigued.  Here's an interesting link I found
on the web:

I use the Groucho system:

works just as well, and a lot cheaper  ;)

I used one of these a while back.  It was made for 17" monitors.  The
main benefit I had was reduced eye fatigue, as it allows your eyes to
focus about 4 to 6 feet away instead of 2 to 3.  Also reduces glare a
great deal.

I borrowed this one from my boss.  I never found any for sale that
were less than $175 or so, and I never found any made for larger
monitors.

You could probably DIY for less, if you can find a good lens.  The
cheap plastic fresnel lenses you can buy from Edmunds DO NOT work well
for this.

Does it need a special set of glasses or will any do?
