I just bought a Canopus Pure 3D card to help with CPR and F1RS. It's still slow
and choppy. I have a Cyrix 166+ with 32Mb of RAM and an origional Matrox
Millennium with 2Mb. I downloaded the first CPR patch but it's still slow. I
don't think that F1RS will be any better. I don't think it's the card because
it's great with NHL98, but I mainly bought  for racing sims.Everyone has said
that a 3Dfx card is one of the best computer upgrades around. Right now a
faster modem sounds much more pleasurable. Am I doing something wrong? Any help
would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Rod

Your CPU (Cyrix 166+) is the culprit here.  They are nortorious for
bad FPU performance.  Games need all the FPU performance it can get.
I had very good speeds with F1RS with my Intel P133.  You may want to
turn down a few graphic settings to get as much push as possible.

Are you overclocking your Canopus card?  You should get away with
clocking it to 57.  Depending on the ventilation in your PC case, you
may be able to run it at 60.  This will increase the frame rates a few
notches.

 Rod,
although the Cyrix chip is not the FPU king of the known world, you should get
pretty decent framerates on normal 3dfx sims with the Canopus card. I believe in
your  case the culprit is CPR. That game (I won't call it a sim) needs a Cray
supercomputer to run fast and it still won't run right. F1RS is like night and day,
CPR is not even in the same catagory. I would try F1RS, I'd bet you would get
pretty decent framerate and of course the sim is an absolute hoot, a real pleasure
to drive.
    All the best, Mike

Hi Rod,
I also have a Canopus and get great fps in both sims.
Make sure your Canopus is being used by going anywhere on your
desktop right clic then properties. Clic on the Pure 3D tab the clic
on advanced. Make sure the box with use Pure 3D as primary 3D
device is checked. I dont know the fps I am getting in F1rs is as there
is no way to check but I would guess 30+ fps. In CPR at a track like
Cleveland I am way over 40 fps. In fact if I use my STB AGP D3D for
CPR I have even gotten 62 fps and have the BMP to prove it. This
though is on my 233 PII with 64 MB Sdram. If you still have trouble
you can E-mail me and we can try to sort it out ok?

It's not the card, CPR is just a very slow performer.

CPR runs like a slug anyway
And having a Cyrix doesnt help things.
Get yourself a genuine Pentium (or AMD) to improve things.
F1RS will run much better than CPR even with a Cyrix....

I think your Cyrix chip is your problem!  I have heard not one good thing
about them.  AMD K6's are awesome and very inexpensive.  They run everything
I have great (LOTS of games, including Janes F-15 with Voodoo1 of course).
Mine is a 166 MMX overclocked to 225 and it's fantastic for games...

A couple of obvous things here.   CPR is a D3D game, and yes the Canopus can do
D3d but it's real strength is in the Glide proprietary format or Open GL.  So CPR
may not make the best use of your new card.  F1rs was coded for the 3dfx so 1st
make sure your are choosing the f1rs icon and not the d3d.
Other things to consider,   make sure you don't have other programs running in
the background.  cntrl alt del  are the keys press and check what is running shut
down all but the explorere.   Good luck there are several folks here who have your
card they might help.

And yet again no reply! I take it the answer is no***pit which is
consistant with your habbit of misleading people about CPR.

Well, I've never seen CPR with or without 3DFX, so I cannot comment on
that.  However, the fact that you had to download a patch indicates that
the game wasn't originally designed for the Voodoo Card.  NHL98 is
designed for 3D accelerators including 3DFX.  I have a similar setup to
yours, a Pentium 200MMX, Millenium 2, Pure 3D.. All of the games I have
played, played well.  Frame Rates increased dramatically.  What API is
the CPR game using?  Direct 3D, OpenGL, 3DFX's Glide?

Actually the ONLY 3D accelerator NHL'98 runs on is a 3Dfx
Voodoo/Voodoo Rush/ Voodoo2.  The way you stated it may lead others to
believe that it may run on non-Voodoo cards.

CPR is using Direct3D.

How do you manage to run it that high? I've got mine overclocked to
187.5 (2.5 x 75 MHz bus speed), and it seems a bit warm for comfort.

Actually Byron I did reply you seem to have a newsreader ISP problem.
Once again I said I run all details except, sky, smoke & steering wheel.
Those are just personal preferences. I get just as good fps either way in
D3D I average low 30s with sky 40s without the steering & smoke seem to
not make a difference ok? I always use a***pit. Face it Byron why do you
even ask?
You only want to charge up your flame thrower right? I never mislead anyone
about
CPR. I have always said I liked it and thats all period. For the record my
favorite sim still
is GP2 ok? All my problems dealing with you have stemmed from my opinion
that it is all right to like CPR thats all. Hope you actually get to see
this.
