I've noticed some drivers using the default fast setup pull 29's at Atlanta.
I'm pretty stumped about how to get there. My times have slowly been
dropping, but the 29 threshold seems out of touch for me. Right now I can
run 30.5's at best, usually 200ths of a second slower. Can anyone give me
any pointers? :)

The 2 things that make the most difference in your times at Atlanta
are getting the car down to the apron for an early apex and getting on
the throttle hard and early.

With fresh, warm tires the ideal line is as follows (this is basically
what it says in the driving tutorial).  In turn one roll about halfway
out of the throttle when you hit the last caution light before the
turn.  I've experimented with waiting until the groove is dark, but my
fastest lap times have all occurred when I let off early and get the
car set as soon as possible.  While you're holding about a quarter to
a half throttle, carefully work the car down to the apron.  The point
I am for takes me to the apron right after the orange 76 ball and
before the big red billboard.  Once you're there, roll to full
throttle.  If you have good car control, just stomp on it.  Stay down
by the apron until you can see the back straight, then straighten the
wheel out and work your way back to the wall.

Turn 3, there is a caution light right where the groove becomes dark
(it's funny how these things seem to pop up at brake/turn/throttle
points).  Roll out of the throttle, and sustain about 1/4 throttle as
you work the car down to the apron.  Just before the grandstand ends
on the right there is a caution light.  Just before you get to it,
bang the throttle open and hold the car down at the apron until you
see the front straightaway.  Straighten the wheel and get back out to
the wall exiting turn 4 (I aim for the red Nascar logo on the wall).
Keep the car as straight as possible through the doglegs so you don't
scrub off any speed.

Just tried this after writing it down and did a 29.9 so it should be
accurate.  The fast setups tend to be tight so you may have to roll
all the way out of the throttle after a few laps, and push the
throttle point a little deeper into the turn.

I thank you for the reply. I'll save your reply and use those tips to help
better my time. Maybe in a month or two I'll be competative enough to
actually start in a online race (once I get DSL, of course). Time for me to
go practice ....Once again, thank you. :-)

Most hot lappers in fixed setup racing are lowering the wheel lock, which
the game allows you to do.
But lowering the wheel lock to an *** level will hurt your tire wear.
So its a trade off.
