Do F1 cars have gated shifters?

Brandon Crick of Act Labs posted on their forum that F1-2000 will support
the RS Shifter.  I was thinking that might feel kinda wierd because it's my
impression that all F1 drivers use paddles on the wheel to shift.  Do they
have gated shifters down below as well?

I'm pretty sure that all the drivers use the paddle system. I do know that
Damon hill had a clutch pedal rather then a clutch button. Take a look at
this months F-1 mag. It has the***pit layouts for the 99 Jordan as well as
the 65 Lotus!

No all F1 cars have sequential paddle gears but I think games will be
including support for this anyway because if you have it,  must be great to
use. And if a game doesn't support new devices it looks a little bad.

No. F1 cars use paddles with a sequential shift.

Do F1 cars have gated shifters?

Ferrari introduced "semi-automatic" gearbox at the 89' Brazil GP(Mansell became
the 1st driver to have a "5 wheels change" Pit Stop when they also replaced the
steering wheel due to electrical malfuntion with the gearbox, but he still
managed to Win)... he!he!

It was developped by Mauro Forghieri in the early 80's and tested by Gilles
Villeneuve before beeig reintroduced by John Barnard on the "Ferrari 640"...

Williams-Renault was the 2nd team to use one in 91'.

By 95', virtually all teams had Semi-Automatic Gearboxes with "steering paddle
shifting"(first steps for smaller teams was to use sequential gearboxes the
previous years, and then, incorporate the hydraulics & electronics to make it
Semi-Auto...)

A Semi-Auto gearbox cannot have a gated shifter cause it has to be
sequential(works like a motorcycle transmission), so only paddles are used to
change gears...

Cheers!
Chris Roy

NB: The "Act Labs RS Shifter" would be fun & realistic on older F1 &
GT/Prototypes...
GPL would be the best Sim to use realisticly the "RS Shifter"....   :-(
(GT/Prototypes, Rally cars, Touring cars, even F3000/F-Atlantic, etc, now all
use Semi-Auto or at least, Sequential gearboxes)

I remember a racing journalist once noting that, if you actually look at the
history of the sport, Ferrari has been somewhat of an innovator (of course,
usually we give Lotus the crown for that).

Other notable Ferrari firsts?  Transverse gearbox comes to mind
(312T-series, mid-70s . . .)

The main reason for a sequential gearbox is the greatly reduced time
to change gears so the drive is only interrupted for a fraction of the
time of a normal manual gearbox. The limitation of the system (so far)
is that it has to be sequential.

I have a feeling that if you could actually directly select any gear
with a computer controlled transmission, that would also be a great
thing. Maybe the RS shifter will be an unfair advantage? The FIA may
have to ban it... ;-)

Zenon

Do F1 cars have gated shifters?

by Richard Walke » Fri, 18 Feb 2000 04:00:00

I'm *sure* that some of the current Formula One cars have a 'shift down
three gears' lever... it's handy for things like La Source (Spa).

The 1998 Jordan had such a device, apparently it went from 5th to 2nd in
one flick.
