I am having trouble linking two computers directly.  Someone told me
that two wires need to be swapped in serial cable.  Does somenone
know which two wires need to be changed

Pins 2 and 3 need to be crossed over (ie 2->3, 3->2, 7<->7).

You can solder this up yourself, but a WHOLE lot easier is to go down to
the store and ask for a "null modem adapter", which does this for you.
Usually about $6 US.

If you have a decent computer store nearby, go there and get a
null-modem cable/adapter (2 different items).  This will take care of them
for you.  Otherwise, I know you have to cross lines 2 and 3 (TD and RD),
and you have to connect pin 7 (Carrier Detect), I think.  If you can, just
get a null-modem... it's so much easier...

Actually, I meant either get a null modem cable, which looks like
a regular serial cable, but has the internal wiring to simulate a modem
connection, or get a null modem adapter, which is a small plastic thingie
that gets connected between two serial cables.  I meant no confusion.

Um, he means get EITHER a null modem adaptor or a null modem cable, but
NOT both.  Using them both together will not allow you to connect and may
cause lose of your hair trying to figure it out.

A null modem adaptor is only $3.99 at Radio Shack.
