Each state has it's own Laws, program, requirements and test.  I would have
someone you know in the state you are moving to go to the DMV and get the
materials and send them to you for study.

Most states have a written, eye and live drive test.  Frankly, I find the
whole thing quite pathetic as far as measuring true driving skill, but I
guess the basics are important :)

Mmm, dunno, but if that includes the main roads needed to get from
Raleigh to Baltimore, then yes

Was on vacation the us back in May 01, drove from Raleigh to Baltimore
to Daytone to Raleigh, and while I enjoyed my stay immensly, the way you
guys drive are below just about anything I've seen over here, and I'm
not kidding either

The Highway Patrol on the other hand are quite friendly towards tourists
who interpret speed limits to their own liking :-)

Nope....Norway, but I did some driving from Baltimore to Florida a
couple of years ago, kinda frustrating the way people hog what we over
here like to call the "fast lane", but then again, like most other
things we are slowly but surely catching up

Heh.  When I was in England (c. 20 years ago), my
dad was driving, and I noticed that, if you were going slow in
the passing lane (rightmost over there of course), you had
BETTER yield to a faster car, and yield quick, or they will
literally run into you without slowing down.  And I (Yankee)
am ignorant of British motor laws, but I'd hazard a guess and
say the slow guy in front would get charged, and not the
guy trying to pass.
Kinda Darwinian in the most vicious sort of sense,
but it ensures that there aren't any turtles in the passing
lane, that's for sure...

Agreed on the manhood-compensating decorations (I would add:
"Make sure you buy the biggest most-gas-guzzling SUV, and stick
the thing up on those huge oversize truck tires"), but I notice that
my Honda tends to get rather loose above 75 MPH (it has a rather
substantial front-air dam-factory issue).  In my next car I may very
well spring for a rear spoiler to keep her glued when going at
higher speeds...

>Ken, you must be able to juggle a cell phone, coffee cup, cuss out the driver next to you and insert a CD, all at the same time.
>Failing that, just play like you're the only car on the road...

Well, the national limit in the UK is 70mph, and I'd say about 80mph is the
average for the middle lane. The fast lane is usually about 90-100mph. If
you're in the middle lane and you're doing 70 then everybody will be all
over you ;-) Having said that, I have never seen a Motorway accident where
somebody just rammed the guy in front, so I guess the system works... It's
not too uncommon to hit 120mph on dual-carriageways, if there's not too much
about.

Of course, I don't live near any really big cities, so there's less traffic,
and less Gatsos. But Jack Straw (Foreign Secretary) was stopped 20-odd miles
away for doing 103mph. Did he pay a fine? Oh no, he just said that there was
a national emergency...

Well Goy, you have to understand the right to drive here in the States is
about one notch above the right to vote.  I remember my driving test well;
start the car, exit the curb and make one lap around the block consisting of
four right turns at stop signs.  No lights, no traffic, no nothin'.  Didn't
wreck, so I was good to go!  There was a written test, but if you knew the
difference between a stop sign and a yield sign you pretty much had it
***ed.  Oh, forgot; this was when I was fif***.  At least they make you
wait a bit longer now... ;-)
