GP Date in US - So They Say

People keep asking this question so here's what Microprose says...

I ordered GPII from the US 800 number and the nice man there said
that they are going to get copies in on the 25th. and that mine
should be going out on the 27th (a Sat?). They ship from San Diego.
I'm in SF, a one day point for UPS,  so I should get it on Monday
the 29th??? Yeah, like all this logic is really going to work out.

The thing is my girlfriend will be going away for the weekend to
a herbal conference on the 27th and 28th. If I could only get it
on the preceeding Friday (26th.) I could just spend all weekend
(literally) playing it without any complaints from her.

I would have to get up from the keyboard to answer the door when
the pizza guy delivers or to go to the head but provided I have
enough Jolt Cola I should be set for 48 hours of solid simulated
Grand Prix fun.

you could just leave the door open and let the pizza guy come in and have
one of those portable toilets they use when they go camping:)

Bill,
Since you're in San Francisco, Why don't you drive up here to
Alameda and stop by our offices, I'll loan you my personal copy if you
promise to mail it back to me as soon as you get your shipment from
our distribution center. this way you will have fun over the weekend.
Now for the others in San Francisco reading this thread, remember I
only have one personal copy :-)

Thanks for the offer very much, Gabriel. But SH down in San Diego did
a fine job and I got it on Wednesday. But as you can see from
my previous post I'm pretty disappointed in GP2.

If you do a side-by-side with ICR2, GP2 comes off pretty badly despite
being a two year newer product.

The most serious flaw is that GP2 will slow time down rather than dropping
frames when the processor overloads. In a driving sim, to me this is
a fatal problem. Race driving is all about picking up subtle time/distance
cues and if the world time can change you cannot rely on what you see to drive
the car.

And it is seemingly impossible to set the frame rate so the processor will
not overload. First turns of races are always going well over 100% no matter
what the graphics are set to.

On my P100, Diamond Stealth 2Mb, 32Mb RAM with all the textures on in SVGA GP2
barely moves, ICR2 runs at least 15fps.

I can turn off all the textures except the skids, smoke, and cars in ICR2 and
run at 30fps in SVGA. I cannot even get close no matter what in GP2.

I know that a P100 is the entry level machine now, but a product should be able
to at least perform better than a two year old one on that entry level machine.

Bill,

I can't agree with your observation.  As hardware technology increases so
will software.  Engineers/developers will do their best to put their
product on the cutting edge.  In two years the software environments will
be so realistic a P-200 will be a dog.  This industry waits for nobody.

GP2 is by far the most realistic auto simulation in history.  It is not
perfect, but the depth of the game is outstanding.  To be able to fine
tune the car setup to the extent that we can has never been done before.
The graphics world is incredible I can only hope that some day I can see
30fps at full detail at Monaco.

Well, those are my thoughts.

Regards

Sorry to hear that Bill. I've got to tell you: 95% of the feedback
we're getting (not only here) is very positive. I guess most people
now have newer systems or the ones talking to us at least. I do run
the game on 2 systems here, one is a P90 and the game performs very
well in SVGA of couyrse with a few settings off (like sky etc.) The
video card has 1 MB it';s a No9 card.

FWIW I forwarded your message to the designers for possible feedback.

Gabe, I'm running GP2 on a P6/200 with 32 megs of ram,
a Matrox Millenium 4 meg card and fast Scsi controller.
I can assure you that when you run GP2 on this type of
platform a side by side with ICR2 yields quite different
results. Perhaps GP2 does need a strong platform to
really be appreciated. I have one, and I appreciate it (G).

To say that GP2 comes of "badly" when compared to ICR2
destroys any credibility that the poster had, in my view.
I don't mind critical pointing out of this or that area
where GP2 could have been even better, but it is clearly
a great piece of work and it looks it too...
