West Racing vows Racing Legends will be completed

Dave Cook quoted West Racing's forum statement that Racing Legends would be completed no matter what. Sceptics pointed to years without working code and the teddy-bear shop, while supporters such as Doug Ellison and Dan Leach defended the brothers and blamed Empire for the cancellation of their earlier World Sports Cars project. Many contrasted the West brothers with the Live for Speed team, which had quietly released a working demo.

Agreed.. I know I've only been here for about a year now and I don't know the history RAS seems to have with these West guys. But I gotta say, all the negativity on this board towards RL would really suck if I was in their position. I mean, they are trying to make a game for us, it'd just be really discouraging reading on RAS people telling newbies how the game is "never going to come out" and all that. Regardless of history, these guys are making a racing game! How cool is that??? I'd LOVE to be in their position, and I'd do my best to please people on RAS who are so serious about racing sims. I'd feel so bad reading some of the remarks every day that I'd almost want to give up, y'know? Who knows, with the support from some of the amazing drivers and intelligent people in here, who knows what this game could be like? A new racing sim is cool with me. Would you expect them to say any different? Come on, use your brain. They have gotten so desperate for cash they are selling friggin' teddy bears on their website. Do you actually think that they would say "Well, we really don't think that RL is ever going to be completed either..." They have been issuing empty promises for 3 years. lol I like Type-R's post where he says they should release the beta if they want an influx of funds, even if it is one car. LOL Well gee, that's a great idea, if only there was anything to use as a beta. Pictures don't make a car go round. :-) I cannot believe how gullible so many folks related to this deal are. I think this is some cruel joke on the sim racing community, or just two guys who have bitten off more than they can chew. I have noticed a lot of knockers for the West brothers sim as well. OK so maybe things will change in the future and they will fall in a heap, maybe not, but why not at least give them a fair go? The LFS guys have done a pretty good job IMHO. The only diffences between them and the Wests are the following: 1. Scawen, Eric and Victor, just kept the project quiet until Beta stage, probably because of all the flack that the Westies have copped. 2. The LFS guys have got one more guy than the Wests, but it seems like Victor is taking care of the music and sound, which is probably a more minor role than is required to do the Graphics & Game Code. As The LFS guys stated in the interview, when asked how they can work so quickly with just 3 guys, They are not tied down by the Political overheads associated with a larger Company like Papy for example. When they need to change code, they just change it, they don't have to wait for a week to get approval via meetings with all of the other departments etc. I know one thing for shore, if RL is half of the Sim that the Wests are planing for it to be, then they have got my money. So in conclusion, I am not into Teddy Bears but put me down for a T shirt and a cap. After all, even if they don't make it, (and I very much hope that they do) just think about the T shirts as a talking point at the Pub with the boys over a Bourbon or 2. ........ Where did you get the T shirt from Darf? .....Oh I got that from The West Brothers web Site.....They were a couple of Guys that were creating their own racing Simulator ....and what happened was....Yada Yada Yada :-) There I go talking about Bourban again Jan :-) Darf

"They are not tied down by the Political overheads associated with a larger Company like Papy for example. When they need to change code, they just change it, they don't have to wait for a week to get approval via meetings with all of the other departments etc." Just remember that is a two way street. With no management in place a on project its very easy to go off on tangents or make unneeded changes. When your so close to a project it is easy to have blinders on. Another area of concern on small team development projects is "group think" where in people get into the same mind set and do not question the direction things are headed. I am not saying this will happen on RL but it is a very common problem in software development. There is a lot more to software development than a couple guys sitting writing code all day. As for the concept of the online store that isn't a bad idea and a good way to raise some small funds, however I cannot imagine making enough on these items (even if they make $5 a piece profit) to fund the development. It needs to be seen as a means of promotion and nothing more. If this is truly only a 2 man team who will be fulfilling orders for the store, handling shipping, getting products made, not to mention maintaining the website and other day to day activities. Being involved in software development myself and running my own company I can tell you that a lot of time is used up on tasks not directly related to actually producing code. I wish the West the best but again all they have produced to date is marketing material. I think if they can get out even a basic demo it would got a long way in winning over a suspicious group and end a lot of this speculation. What rumors would they be? I'd be curious to hear about rumors that got started, and have come up false. So what you are saying is, instead of focusing their efforts on RL, they are going to start up a makeshift storfront and sell stuff for vaporware? Well, I'll give em credit on that, I don't think any company has sold merchandise for something that isn't even close to being a reality. But onto my point, they've spent years producing this thing, yet they have not one thing to show for it (pictures do no count). Now they are going to start another venture of operating a retail store selling knick-knacks, making pennies on the dollars. The reason they said what they said, is because the WB supporters are getting worried, and need a little pasification from them to make em feel better. Absolute agreement here Jon T, you said it! and friggin' TEDDY BEARS ??!! For the love of sweet Jesus in heaven, what the HELL possessed those two to put up TEDDY BEARS ??!! Caps, tee-shirts, that wouldn't have been such a big deal. But TEDDY BEARS ??!! I mean c'mon, what the fuck? Didn't even have time to get my jaw off the floor before I started reading posts here and at the RL forums saying "Oh, sure, I'll buy one... anything to help usher Racing Legends along....". I absolutely cannot believe they are that out of touch with their market. I haven't owned or wanted a fucking TEDDY BEAR since I was five goddammed years old, and I am not about to get conned into buying one now. I may have made an occasional wisecrack about the hardcore Westie's every now and then, but I'll admit I hoped something would come of it the sim. Now I am not sure I would want something from minds as depraved as this to ever be released upon the public. IT IS NOT NORMAL FOR A GROWN MAN TO OWN A TEDDY BEAR. PERIOD. YOU SHOULD NOT MARKET TEDDY BEARS TO THEM. Will this teddy bear come complete with his own little personal ID in a little leather case ? Or will that cost extra ? How bout a little set of rubber teddy lips so teddy can blow me ? Can I ask that here, or should I ask in rec.collecting.teddy-bears ? I would say "Boycott Racing Legends!!", but it appears that would be a moot point. I would say "Boycott Racing Legends Teddy Bears!!", but only the most idiotic of fools would buy one in the first place, and besides, they never listen. All I am saying is that the LFS guys have done a pretty good job of the Beta that they have released, and they only have 3 guys. Some guys posts that it doesn't work on his wheel, or that it would be good to be able to kick wreckers from the server, and a few days later.....BANG....fixed with a patch. So why would it be so unlikely that the Wests will ever get at least to Beta stage using only 2 guys? People bitch about $50 a year for the current stream of sims, and I don't see a sim being priced more, costing for addons is going to make it any easier on them. The masses complain that the current sims aren't open source and can't be added to by the public. Trying to actually sell add-ons will not work for racing sims (track convertors aside, although it is much cheaper than the things slated for RL IIRC). They are pricing this like it is a global corporate must-have software package (Cytrix & SQLServer come to mind) and in reality, they'll be lucky to sell 500 copies. If it materializes, they'll never generate enough revenue to support it *properly*. Foveon had an idea like this a few years ago with some imaging hardware (Silicon Film) and it has seen as much of light of day as RL will I'm afraid.

Mike, The problem is that the West's have been yapping for years now and haven't shown one piece of working code. All talk about revised physics, etc, etc. They have shown some beautiful renderings of cars and some on track screen shots but that's it. I find the whole thing laughable now. Teddy bears for sale??? Jesus. They are approaching Duke Nukem Forever status. I will buy the sim if it ever sees the light of day but I won't fund something that hasn't even shown an alpha code base to exist. The Live for Speed folks have done the right thing IMHO. Low profile, no BS and then produce an alpha test product for the WORLD to see. Now those guys are doing something. Until then, GPL.
> The Live for Speed folks have done the right thing IMHO. Low profile, > no BS and then produce an alpha test product for the WORLD to see. Now > those guys are doing something. Amen to that ! They are showing the West Bros how it should be done. Live for Speed, great job, great potential and an excellent demo show casing things to come.

You overestimate the importance of this ng. First, there is never a general consensus about anything (GP4 sales vs. ng verdict). Second, if they only sell to the guys from ras, they'd need a lot of teddy bear sales to make a buck... l8er ronny

Well people still go see Adam Sandler crap movies, that doesn't make them better then a gem that made 15 million dollars at the B.O. GP4 sold (at a much lesser rate then any previous Crammond title) but it had negative press and is a shame and one of the worst product ever in it's gaming era. > Second, if > they only sell to the guys from ras, they'd need a lot of teddy bear > sales to make a buck... Why is it that when you don't really care too much about the release of certain software, it is released quickly? When you are hanging from a cliff waiting for a software release it takes forever. I have never wanted 2 pieces of software to be released more than Racing Legends and Duke Nukem Forever. Maybe they should rename it Duke Nukem Never :-) Darf "ymenard" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:N26i9.6933$[email hidden]...

Apparently, they come with a slot, but there is a problem with the initial Batch of Teddies, the e-cards wont swipe :-) Darf "ymenard" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:S46i9.6935$[email hidden]... > >"Ronald Stoehr" <[email hidden]> wrote > The question is, do the teddy bears come with slots for E-cards??? <G>

LOL it kinda goes along with my fantasy of having a first-person shooter in some sort of racing world. Carmageddon pushed to the extreme, but on a racing track! Umm... I thought they left all of the WSC code behind, and started from scratch with RL? So they haven't really worked on RL for 3 years... BTW, LFS team worked on LFS for over a year before publishing the demo. I'd like to see RL finished, but when looking at the West website... well, seems like they'll have their hands full if they're gonna include all those features... -- - Igor -

Yep. And they could have avoided all the, deserved imo, comments if they too had kept a low profile like the LFS folks. So, since they didn't, I don't feel a bit sorry for them. John
No they never promised a release date and never set a date on the demo. And the reason we dont have wsc is cause of empire not the wests ..i know ppl that have driven it and can assure u that altho it was scrapped it was a very quality product. dan "Todd Walker" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > In article <ama247$430hh$[email hidden]>, aowk48 > @dsl.pipex.com says... > > The wests never issued any promises about wsc or rl except they wantedto > > finish the stated projects. Blame it on Empire, the big bad profit hungry corporation. History and common sense tells us that a specialized hardcore product (that WSC purported to be) is an unlikely commercial success. Are we to believe Empire misrepresented their intentions to *dumb down* the game for mainstream consumption in order to "trick" the West Bros. to sign on with them as distributor? I certainly have no inside info but common sense would indicate that the West's needed Empire far more than Empire needed the West's. A likely scenario is that the West Bros. desperately needed a distributor with some development $CASH$ to keep WSC alive (after losing their first distributor - I cannot remember the details). I also suspect it was the West Bros. who induced Empire by offering to dumb down the game to make it more marketable. Finally, I suspect that the West's realized they were "selling out" somewhere along the way (by compromising their "vision") and refused to finish the game for Empire thus leading to their split. BTW, I'm rooting for these guys and have been optimistic and favorable towards them until now. I now wish they would stop talking about the game and just get a demo out ASAP. Lot's of flash so far with no substance. The time spent on that website could have been better utilized. I also find the merchandising angle amateurish. If they think selling trinkets will raise enough capital to hire programmers and buy new equipment, I have less faith then ever that RL will see the light of day. This falls well short of investment banking 101 for capital investment ideas. ;0) It seems that they lack a very important quality: business sense. All the programming talent in the world will not overcome that deficiency. -- Joe M. > > "Todd Walker" <[email hidden]> wrote in message > news:[email hidden]... > > In article <ama247$430hh$[email hidden]>, aowk48 > > @dsl.pipex.com says... > > > The wests never issued any promises about wsc or rl except they wanted > to > > > finish the stated projects. Woosh! He was afraid that dissing RL on this ng will reduce the number of buyers of RL, regardless of quality. That's nonsense, just as it is nonsense that GP4 lost significant numbers of customers because it is not liked around here (by 7 or 8 guys ;) Anyway, GP4 is the be... oh, we had that exchange already! l8er ronny
