First impressions and frame rates in the NR2003 demo

Players compared frame rates in the leaked NR2003 demo, finding the new shadows and effects very demanding, with OpenGL versus Direct3D results varying by system. Jay Taylor noted that solar effects were no longer forced in Hardcore mode. Some found the upgrade underwhelming.

Now thats a kite cam! I needed an air sickness bag. It does look good with everything cranked up, but it will bring all but the best systems to its knees with those settings. My XP1800/GF3 would only pull mid to upper 20s in DX at 1024x768x32. Also for me DX was faster by about 10fps. Thats all straight up Papy settings. O didn't try any of the Nr2002 file tweaks. I think I need some new hardware <sigh> MadDAWG

I gained about 30FPS sitting in the pits in testing mode without doing anything but switching rasterizers in the 3D config, so that's what I used from then on; D3D was in the TEENS. But yes, even in OGL it'll still bring your PC to it's knees if you turn all the eye candy up. Hard to compare settings with all the new options, but it definitely is tougher on the system (at least for this leaked build). The Solar effects in particular will bring you to single-digit FPS for a second or so when the sun gets into the cockpit. Couldn't handle that so I turned it off. Overall, the game looks bloody good, though.. More importantly, how's it go? Note that traction control and ABS are on by default in this demo, and you can't shut 'em off. But 'round the track, you can really feel the new tire model. There's a much more pronounced "edge" to the grip than in any previous Papy sim (GPL-onwards). No more floating; you definitely feel hooked up now. And you notice the surface bumps more too, even though they're not going to do much on the banking at Talladega. Seems easier to drive, all in all, and my laps were quicker in '03 going back and forth with '02, by about a second or so. The sound is new, with a higher pitched engine sound (no go for 3D in-car engine sound with the Audigy - surprise!), and there's less tire squeal at low slip angles. Don't know if that's the tire model or the sound, though. At first glance, the AI look a lot better. Running in a pack at Dega, we were lined up running high when Bodine dropped out of line 4 back from the front. Benson was ahead in 2nd and dropped out to form a low line with him. Nice mirror-watching! Nadeau thought he'd join the fun down low from 5th but Kenseth got down there first from 6th and closed the gap on him. Those three hooked up and hung the high line guys out to dry. The high line then dropped back and slotted in behind, ready to repay the favor. Nice. Back to the track... ;-) SB
I was able to shut off traction control, didn't try ABS. I knew it wouldn't affect me much at Tally. Going back for Michigan now, so I will try turning that off. "Steve Blankenship" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Anyone notice your windshield gets dirty as you drive? I'm running an AMD 1.4 with a GF3 ti500 and it runs 60 to 90 fps at 1024x 768 . For me it runs better then 2002 ! So far i like it Bill K

Wait til you blow a motor...THat dang jasper setup blew up twice already at Michigan. I got higher framerates with D3D but I think it's because the 3d config program would only let me select 32bit color with opengl. With d3d I used 16bit and got about 10 more fps. However, I had to turn off the sun glare, that brought the framerate down to near single digits as I turn into and out of view of the extra glare. dave henrie

Why would you have ANYTHING set to medium with those specs???

Duh... Messing around with the graphics a bit more, I'm back to the 5-6 FPS improvement for OGL over D3D I saw in NR2002, but both are well below my NR2002 numbers. Can't seem to duplicate the big difference I saw before, which is odd. D3D definitely looks better, and different options hit the different rasterizers, er, differently. The specular lighting is a small hit with D3D, but about 10FPS in OGL. The solar effect is a killer too, and as it seems to be a must for "hardcore" mode races, I can see a problem there if that can't be avoided/fixed. I run NR2002 in OGL at 12X9X16 w/4XAA and 4XAniso, all in-game eye candy on max and get decent, playable FPS: mid 30's at the start and more as things thin out, maybe high 50's. Gotta turn a LOT of the in-game stuff down/off in this demo to get anywhere near that, even with only 11 cars. Guess it'll soon be FX time... ;-) SB PS - are those Jasper setups uh, special or what? Definitely not Huttu-spec. ;-)
Solar effects are no long forced in hardcore mode due to the performance hit it could cause. Jay Taylor "Steve Blankenship" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

I find it kind of funny that nobody so far has the hardware to support the graphical features that everyone is so pumped up about (sun glare and shadows "on the car"). Has anyone turned off the blimp and helicopter?
If thats the case I guess I'll have to upgrade my GF2 GTS 64 to a GF FX ASAP!!! "ymenard" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:t24X9.50535$[email hidden]...

In D3D it runs about the same if the the graphics are set simular. OpenGL is way slower for me in 2003, but thats ok because I don't like the way OGL looks so I run in D3D in 2002 anyway. MadDAWG
I can max everything in game except the in-car shadows. I can't really even see em anyway and it cut my fps in half... I would guess a CPU around 3gigs with (if the hype is real) a GeforceFX should just about max n2003 out. Again I'm somewhat underwhelmed by this upgrade.. It's cool and all but Papy could have realistically released 3 versions of Nascar Racing series to get where we are now, not the 6 versions they have actually released. Its not a bash on Papy but rather a bash on the entire s/w industry. Why sell one copy when we can add a feature or two call it version 2.0 and sell 2 copies, attitude. I have one of those Momo racing wheels and it is terrific in GTR2002 but in N2003 it feels way off, to the point of un-driveable. I seem to recall guys raving about Papy's FF implementation. I must be missing something cause it sucks in stock form. Are there other settings besides the standard control panel/in game adjustments? I didnt see a core.ini.. I'm less than thrilled with my MOMO as well. I really don't like FF that much. I seeing games like F12002/GTR20002 require a reversed setting for FF I wonder if that something isn't backwards with the Papy games. MadDAWG
