NR2003 copy protection and making CD images

Users reported that NR2003's copy protection stopped Daemon Tools and most CD imaging tools, though one said Clone CD worked, and noted that no-CD patches prevented Sierra online play. The thread became a debate about copy protection, with a poster comparing it to a car key and others arguing that it only inconveniences paying customers.

Nope. And Daemon Tools won't work either, but I suspect he'll fix that if it's fixable. Sierra is obviously using some sort of heavy-handed copy protection on this disc. That spinning CD you see when you launch the program is NOT the program, it's the copy protection validating the disc. Once again, legal users inconvienced and treated as guilty right from the start. I'm sure Papy has nothing to do with this so I don't hold them any blame at all. What's the url for it? NO cd patches usually mean you can't play online but nice not to have to stick the cd in and risk it everytime you play offline. On Fri, 7 Feb 2003 15:24:30 -0400, "Schooner" <[email hidden]> wrote:

Yes but thats the same thing thats on nascarnet.com and it will not work with multiplayer.
How long have you run the cloned CD? I only ask because NR2002 had this nasty habit of leading you on, and then would freeze at intermittent times in the game when a back up CD was being used. It drove a lot of us MAD until we figured out what was going on! Larry "Tim Saunders" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:IiU0a.325$[email hidden]...

Except warez people have no problems operating the software they traffic in. Only those who bought legit copies with "anti-piracy" measures get hardships. One perfect example was the recent release of SimCity 4. Buggy as hell, it didn't take long for EA to issue a patch. To combat piracy they used an online RTF program, but like 80+ percent of people were only getting errors & their game wouldn't patch. The warez community, OTOH, had an identical patch out within 48hrs. So the pirates had no problems playing their patched versions while legit customers got screwed. Not supporting warez, just stating realities. :-( -- Fester An unbreakable toy is useful for breaking other toys.

All copy protection does (or ever has done) is inconvenience legitimate users. Most software is still distributed illegally days in advance of the product actually shipping to retail. And yet we're still burdened with ridiculous CD checks and the like. Even in my Apple ][ days it was annoying as hell that in order to have a backup copy of most software I had to find a BBS carrying pirated versions. On a business level, I can't see how it makes sense at all. Why dump extra development time and expense into something that doesn't generate revenue. Jason

Keys are used to help keep cars in possesion of the LEGITIMATE OWNER who PURCHASED the vehicle. COPY PROTECTION is used to keep LEGITIMATE OWNERS from using something they PAID for as they see fit. Again as has been shown over and over again. COPY PROTECTION DOES NOT STOP PIRACY. The hacks are often released before the game hits retail shelves. MS made a big deal of it's digital rights scheme but there were registration #'s available the same day XP was released. Turbo Tax has littered my system with extra files...files that were preventing some of my OTHER NON INTUIT software from working.(uninstall TT, program works again...you be the judge) The only people who benefit from Copy Protection are the Copy Protection companies...Show me how Sierra will recover the cost of Safe disk or whatever scheme they use, the people who were going to steal Nr2k3 have ALREADY DONE SO! I'd like to see hard numbers on how much $$ copy protection adds to the cost of products I buy. Copy Protection adds to the wear and tear on my system, delays the loading of products, is not 100% compatible with PC hardware and is a real pain when testing editing or mods that require many multiple reloadings of a program. I have bought MANY racing sim...NONE of them require me to find the cd and drop it in the drive and wait wait wait til the copy protection decides I AM NOT A THIEF!!! If I can't bypass the cp with a nocd..I don't keep that product. dave henrie

A better analogy would have been if you had to flip to some random page in your car owner's manual, and enter in a keyword before iut would start. But that is what happens in the computer world. Lets stay with cars for a while...if I went to Firestone for some new tires, would I expect to drive away with a hidden gps receiver tracking my moves? Would I expect the new tires to impact the very functioning of other components of the car? Would I expect a special locking lugnut on the wheel that means ONLY the Firestone dealer can change that tire at a later date? No..these things don't happen in the real world, but in the digital domain they are all together tooooooo common. dave henrie > > > > >

Thus making the point that I didn't agree with your analogy. As I inferred, I don't consider having to turn a key instead of hitting a button to start my car an inconvenience. However, having to find a CD just so that the game will RUN can be a pain in the ass sometimes. Then you have to deal with possible damage to the CD drove because of the copy-protection. N2002 would spin the drive so fast I thought the damn thing would explode. None of my other games do that, and that behavior has been linked with their secure-rom CP. The 'warez' kiddies have no such issues. They just click on the icon and boom, they're playing the game. Thus making the original point that CP is just a <expletive> waste of time that only affects the legal purchasers...
