RASCAR server plans and GeForce FX Ultra cancellation reports

John Simmons asked EldredP to buy NR2003 and host the RASCAR server more often, which Eldred agreed to. The talk turned to video cards after reports that Nvidia had stopped production of the GeForce FX Ultra over noise and heat, with posters weighing the Radeon 9700 Pro and Ti4600.

You buy the sim yet? We need a place to race and build up our LPI. :) Would it be possible to setup the server to be available more often so that we have a place to setup impromptu races? Maybe two days per week along with Saturday?

One last thing, I'm recommending the nVidia because it appears as if more people have good luck with those across a wider range of system configurations. Less problems means more racing. :)
I would have to agree. ATI has a nice card in the 9700 Pro, but it's still ATI and ATI, while greatly improved over the last year, still doesn't have their driver game up to par IMHO. The FX is due any day. Larry "John Simmons" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

FX production has been stopped. nVidia is dumping it.

It's all over the net. They made 100,000 cards and decided that the complaints about noise and heat, and the "two-slot solution" was enough reason to move on down the road. I certainly wouldn't buy one since the card isn't reasonably faster than the 9700 Pro.

FX, hehe.. Larry how can you have an opinion on something you don't own? I mean really dude, you had an issue with ATI drivers in the past yet you say they don't have there driver game up... And you know this how? When you get a 9500/9700pro using cat3's and have problems then we want to hear your opinion. I do agree on the nvidia selection in this case though. I got the impression that ATI's sooner than expected ramp-up to release of the 9900 was the main factor. They're apparently getting such good yields that the production (& retail) costs will be lower than the 9700's, with greater performance to boot. Since the FX was not head-and-shoulders above the 9700 (if at all), they didn't want to produce a lot of cards that would not only end up getting dumped with little or no margin, but would erode the NVidia brand image as well. So they're plowing ahead with the next-gen card instead. Sometimes it's best to retreat and plan for the next battle... ;-) SB

Yes, and yes. I'll be putting another GPL server online this week, so I can keep the NASCAR server open... How about monday and thursday? Gotta download and configure DeMONS first, though. My new 9700 Pro is kicking butt, reformatted XP Pro yesterday and installed the ATI card - very pleased. I was holding out for the FX, but after reading some reviews I elected to go with the Radeon card - my first one. -- Don Burnette "Mitch_A" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:GVx1a.110$[email hidden]... > FX, hehe.. > > Larry how can you have an opinion on something you don't own? Best Buy has a Ti4600 listed at $299. http://www.bestbuy.com/detail.asp?e=11183715&m=488&cat=521&scat=522 Using Pricewatch I found this New York webshop that sell the Asus V8460 Ultra GF 4 Ti4600 for $199 + shipping... http://www.shentech.com/asaggeti12dd.html There's also http://www.directron.com/ti46002.html that offer free UPS ground service shipping on the same card for $209 I got this very card and it's a good buy - even though I plan to switch to a Radeon 9500 as soon as it arrives in stock. Why the "step back" ? - Well... I'm not *totally* pleased with it's performance and I have the oppertunity to do some back to back tests and then decide what to keep :o) My system specs are abit different then Eldred's though... -- ed_ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- $10 says Petter Solberg wins the 2003 WRC.

In Eldreds case a 4600 will cause his CPU to puke blood, without any advanced features enabled to boot. Wouldnt a better idea be to upgrade his mobo/cpu and then throw in a 4200 all for not a heckuva lot more than the 4600 alone? (Im using $200 as the baseline) If E is planning a CPU upgrade soon then this is irrelevant. "Ed Solheim" <edwins[_REMOVE_]@[ _THIS_]online.no> wrote in message news:3sS1a.21167$[email hidden]...

Close :) The ULTRA has been stopped. The normal FX is still supposed to be available at retail. Only certain people who pre-ordered Ultra's will get them. And I have NO idea what that actually means performance wise, compared to ATI yet. I gotta go read up on what the hell is going on. At least HardOCP is saying it's only the Ultra that's canned... I think nVidia needs to do a press release or something... Larry "Steve Blankenship" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

I was hoping it would have gone through a price reduction by now. I was really suprised to find a 5 month old card still going for the original sale prices. I'm getting 60fps with my Ti4400 and not much turned off (I don't like Shadows anyway) so I'll hold off until the Retail price drops to $299 or the next round of cards come out. The GeForce FX cards that ARE going to hit the shelves still might be interesting, but frankly not if they are going to cost $399 like it seems they will. I'd spend that on a 9700 Pro before I spent it on a neutered GeForce FX 5800 card. I was kinda hoping the FX would kick ass so I could afford a TI4600. I usually wait until the latest and greatest comes out so I can get a good deal on the card right below it. From what I've read, I bet the FX is not going to sell that well, and we probably wont see prices dropping on GF4 cards. Anybody in the market for a card should check out Pricewatch.com, 9700 Pros are going for around $300 last check. Brian Oster On Tue, 11 Feb 2003 16:12:12 GMT, "Larry" <[email hidden]> wrote:
