RASCAR Las Vegas race recap

RASCAR drivers described the Las Vegas race, which had 21 entrants and only five cautions, while John Simmons crashed out on lap one. Discussion covered damage repair penalties, using the F2 timing screen versus mirrors, voice command software and an apparent NR2003 bug in the yellow-flag pit and line-up procedure.

Crap. I spun myself in turn 3 on lap 1, Jan t-boned me (sorry Jan), and my motor exploded.

That Las Vegas setup is a real bit** on cold tires... unsually take 2-3 laps before you can truly "nail it" in the turns.. I had a pretty good race myself and ended up 6th - which probably could been a whole lot better had I not screwed up my last stop and gotten 4 fresh tires instead of just 2...meaning I had to complete the last 30 laps on 80 laps old left-side tries. Anyhow.. results have been posted on the site. -- ed_ RASCAR: http://rascar.racesimcentral.com --------------------------------------------------------------- $10 says Petter Solberg wins the 2003 WRC!

A couple laps after the restart, the back end started to slide out. I caught it, and the car hooked up and shot into the outside wall. Since I'd already said that I would bail when I got lapped, I left. I couldn't even keep from spinning during PRACTICE. That was a joke. :-( Eldred -- Homepage - http://www.umich.edu/~epickett GPLRank:-1.680 MonsterRank: +334.169 N2002 Rank:+17.59 Never argue with an idiot. That bites John, you did well last night. Some good green flag runs there, I was pleasantly surprised. And 21 racers, great turnout. -- Tim White www.intracmotorsports.com "John Simmons" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > Crap. Can I join the moaners thread? <g> Indeed, I inadvertantly put myself in a losing position at the occasion of John's spin (no problem, John). From my point of view it appeared I didn't hit him that hard, but I did receive serious engine damage. When I went to get that fixed I fell foul of one of those "passing under yellow" bullshit bf's one gets when pitting while on the speedway (and unsighted) the pack backs up a bit. When we went green again it was obvious I'd lost some 1000rpm off the top end, but that didn't bother me much, what does bother me is that, by NASCAR rules the team is allowed to work on the car when serving a penalty. I'm sorry, but I have neither the agility of mind, neither the dexterity to turn off changing tyres and refuelling when driving online. Anyhow, because I couldn't see the needle on the tag clearly (wheel spoke in the way) I must have sped a little, leading to a 2nd bf - drive through penalty (phew... lucky the crew didn't get to do 3 four-tyre stops in 5 laps). Anyhow, back on the speedway, determined not to repeat last week's DNF. Things are going relatively smoothly, I can still run around 34s dead. Even on the restarts there's a break to get to the top of the track (so I can get out of the way more easily) relatively quickly. I was doing just that on the high groove down the front straight when the 06 and the 45 tripped over eachother as they tried to pass me and eachother. I was taken out by the accident and, though there was little apparent damage, the engine was now dead. Two races, two DNFs... this is year's campaign is going real swell. ;-( Jan. =---
Hey add to that song 'the sun was in my eyes', and you'd have that excuse down pat :) just kidding bud :)) As for the slight damage to your car hurting your performance I am not surprised. N2003 has changed what damage really means. You can barely scrape a wall, get a YES to fix in the F9 window, it take only a few seconds to repair it, see no visible damage on even a fender after fixing it ... and your out of the race. It's like the horsepower monkeys ate all the bananas and ran for the exits. :( -- Tim White www.intracmotorsports.com "Jan Verschueren" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:CV98a.105280$[email hidden]... > "John Simmons" wrote... > > Crap. Those last 15 or so laps was really challenging for me. I never could get the passover down. Otherwise, I think I could have taken 6th away from Ed. After the kids go to sleep, think I'll watch this race again. ..... . grub
"EldredP" wrote... > <snip> > F2 screen, Jan... 1) real NASCAR drivers don't have an F2 screen, routinely pass drivers still on the speedway when entering pit road after receiving damage and don't get a penalty. Real officials know they can hardly look right and are gonna be disadvantaged by remaining stationary for a long time anyway. 2) Like I said, I don't have the dexterity to fiddle with F-key screens when I'm driving. The F2-screen, when set to showing instant intervals is a major distraction. I don't want that in my peripheral vision as a matter of course. I'll look into mapping wheel buttons to these actions... Well I finally had a decent race going and was moving up slowly, mostly due to other people's misfortune, but moving forward. I didn't botch my pitstop or speed in the pit lane and was in 7th place, I came around the tri-oval and was putting a pass on, I believe it was #48, and then I took the inside and BAM! right into somebody, I never heard my spotter say "inside" though, I guess it happened too fast. Sorry for taking anybody out! I was unfixable and had to retire, Damn, I was really stoked because I was hanging in there too, not great, but I've never raced online or on ovals before these two races and a couple practice races, so it's still all new to me. I do like it, hope I don't get in anyone's way too much. Joe Saxon (#06 Punisher6) "John Simmons" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > Crap. Eldred I got a lot of buttons on my wheel but dont know how to program them. I started to read the instructions once, but got frustrated. My wheel is a thrustmaster pro digital usb. The F2 screen is a good one expecially if you are lapped and want to stay out of the leaders way. It is kinda nerve racking though. If you catch youself starring at the F2 screen too much, you'll find yourself in the same predicament as racing through your rear view mirror....in the wall or in a wreck. These sims require that you be smooth. Smooth going in, and smooth going out. Sometimes quick, and sometimes slow. Consistent stroke after stroke. Lap after lap. When your done, and you lasted till the end, without a premature wreck, then you can say that you have done something. It may not be the best you ever had, but at least you finished. Is the room getting hot, or is it just me? grub "EldredP" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > In article <oYc8a.106833$[email hidden]>, "JanVerschueren" > <[email hidden]> writes: > > >2) Like I said, I don't have the dexterity to fiddle with F-key screenswhen > >I'm driving. I use the straights to check the live interval. For the turns, I concentrate on spinning the car artfully.

I figured out what Dave and me did wrong at that final yellow. It appears we both took the yellow in the pits and when we exited we stayed behind the pace-car. At that point we were 2nd and 3rd behind the pace-car, but our time read something like 1:33 with 10th and 11th place. My guess is that we should have passed the pace-car right away instead of waiting for the final lap. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think that during the final yellow lap you're not allowed to pass the pace-car anymore. Oh well, always things to learn.:) Apart from this I had a fine race, enjoyed racing you guys again. Cheers, jurjen
To be honest I was pissed until I looked at the replay. I thought you ran into me while trying to pass, but I was the one who went off line and went for the low line. It's way out of your line of sight, checking that has got to be slowing you down. Besides what extra information to you get from it? You don't need a number to tell you someone's getting closer in the mirror. I can see the use for getting used to leaving a proper gap when pacing or, as you suggested, make sure you hold your relative position when it's hard to see the other competitors due to lateral separation, but that's about it. You can spot Tim carving up the field a mile away on some tracks. ;-)) > > <snip> > I don't have any extra buttons... :-( I don't think I have enough to spare either (3). Hmmm, gotta fix this... Grub/Larry, Do you use the TM software? It's been a couple years since I used the PD2 but IIRC it didn't support dual axis pedals in XP. Check the TM site and see if they did actually ever release the XP software (if you are running XP that is). That AFAIK is the only way to use more than the standard 4DX buttons on your wheel.. I cant imagine not having the F2 screen up as I race. Mitch > > Eldred > > I got a lot of buttons on my wheel but dont know how to programthem. I simply cannot imagine racing online without having the F2 screen pernamently embedded on my screen. I toggle the other screens, particularly F1, F3, but it goes right back to F2. Wouldn't leave home without it. Heck if your paying any attention to your gauges (kinda like real racers do) what is the difference with the F2? Oh and my spotter calls out lap times too. :) -- Tim White www.intracmotorsports.com

There is a bug in the N2003 s/w that, if your on the tail end of the lead lap, but in front, the spotter tells you to line up on the inside. Clearly this is not a WC rule, and you should be allow to stay on the outside line. Hopefully this will be fixed in some future patch. I have noticed several bugs with the spotter in offline racing with the AI so its not just us. -- Tim White www.intracmotorsports.com "JJ" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:3e62324e$0$49108$[email hidden]... > I figured out what Dave and me did wrong at that final yellow. > It appears we both took the yellow in the pits and when we exited we stayed > behind the pace-car. Your kind with the compliment Jan, but really, the F2 screen is a tremendous value for everyone, mostly when when you are racing long runs. You can tell where you are better, or worse, on the track than someone else. (Early on, I could see where Brian and Mitch would gain in one turn, and loose it in the other). If you just set it at S/F track position you won't know where your losing or gaining on the track, especially when there is braking involved. You can tell who in front of you and behind you are the ones you are racing with, versus someone comming up on you who may be a lap+ down, so don't sweat it if they are aggressive and want to get by, let em go. You can tell if your gaining on someone, or they are gaining on you, so change your line, pick it up, etc. Saturday, Ginger was running me down on that last run. I knew I wasn't driving any different so I was hoping he was cooking his tires, which it turned out he was. But I didn't know that for sure, and since G wasn't around me all day; coming from the back, I had no way of knowing. So while I was fairly confident I knew what I was doing, I wasn't confident that I was any better than him. The F2 screen allowed me to measure my effort, with how many laps left, and how much I had to push my car to not let him whiff a draft. If we caught a late caution, I wanted to make sure I had at least as good a tire wear left as he, hopefully better. The only way I could do this is using the F2 screen to only work my car as hard as I needed to. I've heard of a lot of people not liking all the activity the F2 screen gives you. With some hardware it even has an extra hit on your frame rate. But the spotter isn't doing what real life crew chiefs do for you which is calling out someone elses lap times, telling you if someone is gaining, or if your the fastest out there, etc. The F2 screen is the sims answer to that. -- Tim White www.intracmotorsports.com "Jan Verschueren" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:WYr8a.113183$[email hidden]... > "EldredP" wrote... > > > <snip> > > Ok. Yes. It worked in earlier sims so I'm not sure what happened with N2003. In real life, what can happen is your on the lead lap, the caution comes out and for whatever reason you elect not to pit. The pace car always picks up the leader. But then you all come around and every one from the leader back pits except for you (For whatever reason your crew chief tells you to stay out). But you (and maybe the pace car) don't manage to cross the S/F on the track before the leaders pass it on pit row. They come out but they are still scored as the leader but now they are behind you. Another way is your down a lap, the caution comes out. When the leaders pit you pass them and now your back on the lead lap but when the second lap comes around and the lapped cars can now pit you stay out. Your still on the lead leap now because of them pitting but your in front of them. You can't pass the pace car after the track is under full caution so your on the lead lap, stuck between the pace car and the leaders. The WC rule about double file restarts is all cars on the lead lap stay on the outside, all cars down one or more laps go inside. Although the pace car always picks up the leader, double file restarts have nothing to do with what position the leader is in. There are a lot of other instances where this can happen these are just the most common. -- Tim White www.intracmotorsports.com "Jle" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > "Tim" <[email hidden]> wrote in > news:hvs8a.66379$[email hidden]: > > > There is a bug in the N2003 s/w that, if your on the tail end of the > > lead lap, but in front, the spotter tells you to line up on the > > inside. > > Are you saying that it's possible to be lined up in front of the leader, > both in the same lap? > >

Jurgen, I think what happened to you guys is that when the yellow was first thrown you guys were a few seconds back. The lead group quickly caught up to the pace car at T3-4 and the pits were closed on that pass by for whatever reason, maybe cause the yellow came out just as the leaders came to the flagstand? You guys came in not knowing the lead pack had already bypassed the pits that lap. When I came into the pits it was madness. I couldnt figure out at the time what the heck was goin on. All I know is guys were comin out at a very unexpected moment for me :/ Is it me or is it nearly impossible to pit when the guy just in front of your stall is in his pit. I pulled in a little hot but had almost no turning radius and had to squirm into my stall losing a bunch of spots at the wrong time (32 to go). I did make sure that the Low speed turning radius thingy was checked. Mitch "Jle" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

I do the same thing, I allways have f2 up or readily available. When entering the pits under caution I keep one eye on the f2 screen to make sure I don't pass the car in front of me... rather lose a position on pit road then get a bf. It's just you, Grub...<g> Actually, I find the F2 screen easier to keep an eye on than the mirror. I've had cars sneak up on me without my knowledge. They sort of get 'lost' in the mirror. However, when the F2 readout turns red and starts blinking, you can't miss that. Plus, that also tells me if there are multiple cars running together that I have to let by, or if I can slot in behind the first car. I haven't been in a race long enough to pay close attention to the mirror, either. I just turned off the interior as soon as I hit the track. It didn't matter during my offline practice, and I was at the tail ent of the field in Vegas. It SHOULD have been 22 :( I was absolutely going to be there, but I made a huge mistake. I trusted my Cable Company. My neighborhood was finally 'upgraded' to Digital Cable last week. The old cable system used a dual-trunk system (2 cables - A line and B line) and the new system uses a single 'A' cable. In the old system, Data was carried on the B cable. It was a mandatory change to have a "B-Cable Crossover" procedure done to move your modem to the "A" line. You don't have much choice because they are cutting off the "B" cable in a weeks time. So, SuperTech (tm) comes out at 11am on Friday to do my mandatory "B Cable Crossover" to move my Cable Modem to the "A" line. He started at 11am Friday morning. That was the last I saw of my Internet Connection for FOUR FRIGGIN' DAYS! Heaven forbid they actually TEST this shit before changing people over. I just got it back a few hours ago (Monday). And they would not allow me to change back to the "B" side until they fixed it. The guy actually LEFT me without connectivity on Friday. He said "My job is to change it, that's all". Oh, I gotta stop talking about this before I have a siezure. Larry "Tim" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:iw98a.4005$[email hidden]...
