RASCAR: Race at Rouen at 6pm eastern

RASCAR road race on converted GPL tracks

John Simmons announced an off-week RASCAR road race at Rouen using GPL tracks converted to NR2003 with Dave Noonan's converter, but some drivers got version mismatch errors. Members debated whether converted tracks could legally be shared, and Larry objected to races that required buying the converter. John clarified these were extra races, not official RASCAR events.

Its a converted GPL track Larry. If you have GPL, you need to buy Dave Noonan's converter and convert the tracks for use in NR2K3. RASCAR will generally be running races at the converted tracks on the weekends when Nascar is on a break. So far, the only exception is next weekend when we run the previously postponed event at Daytona.

I got that message as well. I was looking forward to racing there. Would it be a bad thing to do road races at 6pm eastern on a semi-regular basis (not just the off weeks)? Spark

I did a straight conversion on un-modified GPL tracks.

I think that's why in other leagues they upload the converted tracks to a web site so that all the members are assured of having the same version. John Simmons <[email hidden]> wrote in news:[email hidden]: > I didn't think that was legal. > > I don't think it is a matter of legalities, but propriety. If you support the work of track convertors like Dave Noonan, you require all league members purchase the convertor. But...as we are finding out, N2k3 seems to be VERY picky about tracks, so league admins would be wise to make available a standard track for each event. Otherwise not all the members will be able to connect. As far as users taking converted tracks done with Noonan's utilities and then releasing them...THAT will only end with Noonan and other no longer converting tracks. Short term gain that will harm all simmers in the long run. dave henrie (no babies were killed in the writing of this post)
Technically no, unless he has a license agreement with Papyrus, which I don't think is the case. IMO Noonan does not have any legal rights to tracks created by his converter since they are Papy's intellectual property. I doubt very much that he could take any legal action against anybody for posting tracks. The only thing he has any right to is the converter itself, and even that is questionable since it is a piece of code which reverse engineers Papy's intellectual property. Not saying whether I'm for or against what he is doing, just that I don't believe he has any legal protection for what he is doing. That being the case, I don't see anything wrong with posting the tracks to a low profile website or ftp server. If you want to be supportive of him just put a password on it. No, I thought that since they were originally supplied with a papy product, even in partched form, they were still copyrighted since they contained peices of the binary images originally found in the papy products. At least, that's what everyone used to be concerned about...
Oh, good point. Well, I still think that as a group you could probably set up a passworded ftp server, password e-mailed to participants, so that you can at least make sure you all have the same track version. Participants would be expected to already own a copy of the game the tracks were from, you could enforce that however you wanted. If you e-mail David I believe he's allowed this for leagues before, then it's a matter of getting Papy's permission to do the same, which I also believe is quite possible, and everybody's happy :-) Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy "goyl at nettx dot no" http://www.theuspits.com "A man is only as old as the woman he feels........" --Groucho Marx--
Well, for the first time I have a gripe about RASCAR operations. Because I haven't paid for someone elses utility, I won't be able to run in a RASCAR Race? Please tell me I am just misunderstanding something :) Now, an EXTRA race, sure. Go for it. But not the main race that EVERYONE who is a part of RASCAR is supposed to be able to run in. -Larry

1) Official Rascar races are on Eldfred's server, and the schedule reflects the real life Winston Cup schedule (to the extent possible). On weekends where real-life Nascar is not racing, and unless we're making up a race postponed from an earlier date, I will be hosting races on GPL tracks that are available to those who have converted the tracks themselves. If this means that you have to already have GPL and pay someone for some software to convert said tracks, so be it. I paid the money. I'm legal. If you somehow procure a copy of the track, there is no way I can verify that you did/didn't get it the same way I did. Let your conscience be your guide. That's one reason that I've never been keen on running the road courses in RASCAR, even though *several* people have asked me about it. I believe the races John is talking about are just fun races... My greatest fear for simmers is the DMCA. Companies have been mis-using the DMCA and smacking people upside the head with it every since it was put into law. Take for example the Lexmark vs. companies making compatible printer cartridges. Lexmark used the DMCA to stop it and, god help us, they won. The DMCA is set to destroy nearly any and all innovation in the computer world and it's going to create monopolies like nothing we've ever seen before.
