Doubts over Racing Legends after months without updates

Nick noted that the Racing Legends website had not been updated for three months and questioned the West brothers' commitment. Douglas Ellison defended them as people he had met and trusted, while others called the project vapourware or argued that the developers could be honest yet over-optimistic. The thread became a familiar faith-versus-scepticism argument.

It hasn't updated since Feb 16, that's 3 months ago. Surely they could have done a couple more 3D Studio MAX renders in that time? ;-) And Tony sure does spend a lot of time staring at that same screen! If they want people to believe their promises, they have to show a little more commitment to us than that. If RL is not going to have a publisher, then the main method of selling is through their website. If that doesn't change throughout development, except to show a couple of new renders every couple of months, then we will go somewhere else. I've kept open-minded about the whole RL thing since it was announced, but it's getting to the stage where I'm losing faith. I hope I'm wrong.

Whats the harm in that? Carry on with your life - if it comes try it, if it doesnt, dont. All the best, Ash http://www.siroccoracing.com

I read a thread recently with some fairly frank opinions on this project, went to the website to have a look and concluded, like nick, that the fact that they havent updated their site since february does not look very encouraging. steve

The point is not to complain that a sim that I am waiting for isnt ready. The point is to comment that it is odd that west feel that a website publicising their forthcoming product with news on progress is worthwhile, but not worthwhile enough to update for more than three months. I think this is a perfectly reasonable point of view. I dont care about this game. If it appears, I will care if it's any good. For some reason any mention of this project seems to elicit a disproportionate opposing reponse, regardless of its merits. To be posting such a response while also recommending a constructive use of one's time is a bit ironic. steve

No a significant number of people will believe in their promises purely on faith. I'm not sure what evidence you're expecting to see, the url going offline? Surely that will be blamed on sun-spots, network problems etc.. nothing financial. A signed statement from the Wests? Surely that will be a forgery out of Nigeria. You're just NOW losing faith? LMAO Anyone who still believes in RL must be gullible enough to consider buying beachfront property in IDAHO!!!! pffffffft (Not a knock on you necessarily Nick, just in general towards people who fathom this becoming a reality. That was my point too. If your website is your main means of selling your product, and you also set it up throughout development to keep your fans in the loop, then surely not updating it for three months is a contradiction of thought? I'm not hanging on RL, I check the website every once in a while to see if there has been an update (every few weeks or so, which is what I would class as a good period between news updates). Also, there seem to be a disproportionate number of fanboys who won't accept anything bad written or said about RL. They are the ultimate hardcore fans of something they have never played or even seen, of a developer who has never published a title. These people deter me from the forums, for example, a quick look through today sees articles about the 3 month lack of news signalling that it's done, being tested and will be with us in days! (In fact, my search of the west-racing.com forums leads me to believe that Doug is one of these fanboys, although I can't back that up because I was only there for a few minutes. Sorry Doug if that's wrong or it's a different Doug ;-). The company that always pops into my head is id software. There are always things they can do to their engines to make them better before they ship, John Carmack is always a generation ahead of the technology, but they ship on time, rake in loads of cash with which to spend developing 'what that game should have been'. The problem with developing until you have the best product is simply the fact that the goalposts move faster than you can, so you will *always* have something else to do before it ships. Outcome? It doesn't ship, ever. It happens a lot in software engineering. The Wests need to say 'whatever we have at mm/dd/yy, we ship, then we develop version 2'. Until they do that, I fear that RL will disappear up its own exhaust pipe.

I've met them, know how much they're ploughing into this, and happen to trust them Other people dont. Eitherway - waiting doesnt hurt anyone Doug
I remember reading a post on their message board about how that website was never really meant for us to go to for updates, it was there to show people like investors, sponsors and car companies the concept. It was also mentioned that they aren't being public with a lot of things, so they don't repeat the disappointment with the hyped whatever that other game was called :) Mike http://mikebeauchamp.com "Nick" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

To believe they're being honest - one must assume it is realistic. If it is not - then they are not being honest This is a very very silly argument - thats for sure Doug
> To believe they're being honest - one must assume it is realistic. No, they might be honest but mistaken. I'm not saying that they are, I'm just saying that's an option. steve

Well, someone else in this thread does say that they're trying to avoid hyping it up too much, which causes its own problems, as the people working on another title <cough> found. But I must say that three months with no update at all is a bit far the other way. All I'll say is: National Semiconductor 16032.[1] I certainly don't think it's remotely sensible to start accusing the Wests of being liars or anything silly like that, but equally I have to say that the slightest criticism about the time being taken is being jumped on somewhat heavily, and that's not very edifying either. Anyone who played Daikatana will forever be suspicious of "ready when it's ready". We as prospective customers have a right to whinge: the Wests have a right to ignore it. [1] A BBC Micro addon CPU which was delayed so epically that only a few ever saw the light of day, and this on a machine in production for a decade. -- Above address *is* valid - but snip spamtrap to get me to *read*! I wonder why they didn't announce they would move and weren't able to update the news section on the website for a while BEFORE they moved. Now we heard it after they didn't post for a couple of weeks, and only if you read the whole forum. It's little things like that what makes their life a lot harder and it could easily be avoided. OK.....I don't post much....just mainly read and enjoy the friendly banter amongst all you knuckle-heads;)! I've been following the West's antics for SEVERAL....I Repeat "SEVERAL" years and I find it absolutely hilarious how people can be suckered into anything! It's like in the old West (Hmmmmmm....) with the traveling medicine shows. It seems that no matter how advanced the human race becomes, there is always those that will smack themselves on the forehead and yell "Dohhhh" after getting snookered into something REALLY stupid....that is if they are alive to do it(Jim Jones, David Koresh, HITLER!). I truely believe the West's are sincere about RL but have AGAIN over-promised and under-delivered on their product which is a CARDINAL sin for any business to do. They said that there would be a product by the end of last year....POOF!....a DEMO........POOF!! ....An In-game video?....POOF!! ....How about an in-game screenshot.....JUST ONE PLEASE to prove to your dying fanbase that there is ONE iota of a chance that your Sim will EVER see the light of day! If they were truely making progress, don't you think that by now, after nearly 2 years, there would be at least something more to show than a suspension/tire render and a still of a country road? The LEAST they could do would be honest with everyone in their "Cult" and tell them they are all gonna die BUT that they will recieve TOTAL conciousness AND a limited edition, Leather-bound copy of "Racing Legends" upon entering the pearly gates!!!
