Defending the IndyCar Series demo against critics

David G Fisher praised the IndyCar demo's graphics, physics and force feedback, and challenged critics to show that NR2003 was better in those areas. Others compared it to CART Precision Racing and felt the genre had moved past it, though some, including Bruce Kennewell, found it enjoyable. The exchange carried over the political animosity from other threads.

Seems pretty damn excellent to me. Graphics are nice and smooth. Physics seem very realistic. I made sure to have my wheel set up correctly, and I'm really impressed with how it felt. FF, tespecially the feel of bumbs in the track, and damage are excellent as well. Had some really intense racing with the AI too. Racing at those speeds with the AI car right next to you was fantastic. Not sure what some of you are pissing about to be honest. For a demo of a product at only 70% completion, I was extremely impressed. N2003 seems like a bore in comparison. If it had N2003's net code, I'd forget about N2003 alltogether until a modern F1 mod come out for it (fantasy I'm guessing). David G Fisher

I second that.
Find those hundreds of tons of bio/chemical weapons yet Nick? How about that nuke program? So far it seems like MS Cart Precision Racing all over again. Salvie "ymenard" <> wrote in message news:7x5Ga.13144$...

Yeah, gots to agree there. I've been sitting on the sidelines trying to keep an open mind and figuring that no matter how bad it is, I'd still pick it up since it's better than nothing. I stand corrected.

None of them can honestly say that: N2003 has better looking graphics N2003 runs faster with a 23 car field. N2003 has a better damage model. N2003 has a better track surface (smooth as glass still). That you CAN'T race nose to tail and side by side with the AI at 220+mph. If they say that I can't, then I'll gladly post a replay to prove them wrong. Who's going to embarrass themselves first and try to answer "N2003" to any of those questions? So what's so controverial about what I said? Of course when I said the cars in GPL were sliding way too much, that was controversial too (until about a year ago). Apparently they can't be bothered to, or are too stupid, to get their wheel set up correctly and then experiment with the various controller options (also, turn off traction control) until they get the car to feel and handle smoothly and realistically. Standard r.a.s. stuff. If they can't be bothered or are too dumb, then they should just say, "I'm too lazy or dumb to set up my wheel correctly, so I have no opinion on the sim". If the game won't let them set up their wheel correctly because it's a demo that represents the product at just 70% completion, then they should just say, "The demo won't let me set up my wheel correctly, so I can't have an opinion on the sim". Unfortunately, they'd rather continue the years long r.a.s. tradition of putting the need to give a negative opinion ahead of all else. Yes, the car does feel excellent once you find the right settings. It behaves like a real car does. N2003 sure as hell does NOT feel make me feel like I'm driving a real car any more than this sim does. Maybe I'm just not blown away with N2003 (but still fell it's excellent). Without practicing N2003 at Pocono for even one minute since last season's second RASCAR race, I qualified 4th last weekend after our practice session. It felt like a game to me, not like I was in a real car. They both feel like games to me. One is definitely more fun though. David G Fisher
Well, I've just tried it and - GASP! SHOCK! HORROR! - I don't mind it at all. In fact, I left it after several 10-lap sessions wishing to see more of it (and wishing I could use manual gear-changing, but I guess that's not available in the demo). But then, I'm not as anal as some about physics and multiplayer capability and in-game music - which can always be turned off. My criteria is based around the age-old question: "Am I having fun"? If I answer "Yes", then that'll do me. Bruce.

Kinda like your "years long r.a.s. tradition of putting the need to give a negative opinion" of r.a.s. regulars - OF WHICH YOU ARE ONE. You're so frickin predictable. You get me to bite because that's the kind of guy I am - my problem. I just can't stand condescending, arrogant folks who feel that their "opinion" is more valuable than their peers. And that is, IMO, what you are. > Yes, the car > does feel excellent once you find the right settings. It behaves like a real > car does. N2003 sure as hell does NOT feel make me feel like I'm driving a > real car any more than this sim does. Blah, blah, blah. When you've driven an IRL car and a Cup car then I'll take what you say seriously. All sims require a "suspension of disbelief", and if N2003 does not make you feel like you're driving a car, the criteria that you require for this to happen is obviously different from many (most?) sim-heads. Therefore your (minority?) verdicts will be incompatible with a lot of people here. And that is exactly the case as we see time and again. You're not any more clever or canny because what works for most doesn't for you - you're just different. And it manifests itself in the worst possible way. > Without practicing N2003 at Pocono > for even one minute since last season's second RASCAR race, I qualified 4th > last weekend after our practice session. [sarcasm] I take it all back. You're my hero. How do you do it? Can you teach me o great one? Pleeease? [/sarcasm] > It felt like a game to me, not like > I was in a real car. I've got a gut feeling the "poly count" for the track is quite a bit higher as well. But one can't compare a full game against something that's 70% completed, so that's like saying a car looks better fully assembled. > N2003 runs faster with a 23 car field. I've not found how to display framerate in the demo, but, on that resolution, NR2003 runs smoothly (40fps+) with 43 cars on track, 24 visible and everything on but the in-cockpit shadows. > N2003 has a better damage model. You should have said "more realistic"... <g> I consider the NR2003 damage model *better* because a good knock will make the handling go away a lot more than it does in this demo. I should have knocked off the RF corner in T3 on some occasions, but instead there appeared some wheel wobble and the car picked up a slight push. > N2003 has a better track surface (smooth as glass still). Hmmm... hard to tell really, but NR2003 communicates what surface there is better to the driver. > That you CAN'T race nose to tail and side by > side with the AI at 220+mph. Hehehe... you can't let that go, can you? -In the context of the time, that was not a big issue. Nowadays it's a different story. Let's not forget it was GPL which allowed our tastes in simming to be refined, though. > Apparently they can't be bothered to, or are too > stupid, to get their wheel set up correctly and > then experiment with the various controller options > (also, turn off traction control) until they get > the car to feel and handle smoothly and > realistically. Amazing how fluently and easily you'r able to contradict yourself, David. <VBG> Seriously, you'd make a decent simmer if you applied yourself a little more, but if you're happy to stay a gamer, then I'm happy too. Jan. =---

It's not half bad, better than I expected (and I hate the IRL). Default setup is bollocks, but if you get the car sticking flat out all the way around you can have some nice dices with the AI. Dunno if I'm impressed to the point of getting the PC version, but I'll certainly pick the xbox one up when it's out. Jason

I'm just waiting for somebody to make the (hopefully!) inevitable comparison to the All-American Open Wheel Racing (AAOWR) mod for NASCAR Heat . . . Did anybody else find it ironic that virtually all of the independent, third-party Heat mods have included Windows-style self-installers for several years now, yet Codemasters and Brain In A Jar saw fit to release a demo for their upcoming RETAIL product in a common zipfile. :-/ -- JCB

Howdy JB; long time... For some reason ;-) I have no doubt the wonderfully-named AAOWR mod will put it to shame. Almost as many letters as the innately superior BPCWSPBF! But being Heat-based, of course no one will dare admit it. SB (harboring fond memories of hanging onto a trimmed-out-for qualifying champcar at Fontana way back when. Two laps flat were all you could get out of it before the tires went off enough to make you lift. Lovely...)

Controller setup is a black art. Some games make it easy to do, some make it as agonizing as pulling teeth. If one game doesn't work with the settings that every other game you own DOES work with, which would logically get the blame? Besides, you might not even KNOW there's a problem with a setting...especially if that setting works with everything ELSE...
