What happened to the West brothers' Racing Legends?

Bruce Kennewell asked about Racing Legends, whose website had not been updated since February. Ashley McConnell said the developers were still working but had withdrawn from forums after threats of legal action. Others called it vapourware, compared it to Battlecruiser 3000AD and Duke Nukem Forever, and reported that the brothers had sold their house to fund it.

Please, lets not go there. Waiting for Legends is like waiting for a decent Aussie V8 sim. Steve
LOL!! :) From that reaction, I take it that here's been "some discussion" regarding this very subject, Goy? I've been out of the loop for a while and was just tidying up some internet links and came across my West Bros. URL, clicked on it (first time in many months) and found that their NEWS has not changed since February! What are they doing.....does anyone have any hard and fast info on what was supposed to be the "crme de la crme"? Bruce. "Goy Larsen" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Okay, thanks for that, Jan. Being the eternal optimist that I am, I'll take the view that they are SO busy working on it that they simply haven't had time to update the site. :) (Dumps internet link into wastebasket). Bruce. Hi Jan, I can understand, when people threat legal action (for lack of updates!?!?) and encourage other people to do the same, why they don't talk in the foums anymore. I know the guys are still working hard on RL I can't wait to see some of the techniques Chris has been talking about! All the best, Ash http://www.siroccoracing.com

A hick-up or something you hadn't thought about when designing can take weeks to fix. It's hard to quantify how long these things take. All the best, Ash http://www.siroccoracing.com

We see more activity with the free sims than we do from the Wests (we get more feedback from Papyrus for christ's sake). We've seen several sims released, and several updates to those sims in the time we've all been waiting to see even a beta version of RL. Threatening legal action is not only ludicrous, it's a meaningless threat, and only makes those doing it look like a bunch of fuckin' retards. If RL ever does see the retail light of day, fine. However, I suspect we'll have something else that's even better by then, and RL will start out as an also-ran without ever having been the pinnacle of sim racing the Wests originally wanted it to be.

Visiting the forum only makes one loose faith it the whole project. Working hard instead of pleasing the forum community is a wise choice, but I think they should have said that's their new policy. Are you thinking of what I was thinking of? Battlestation 2000 or whatever it was called? Dunno if anyone here saw that, but in 1999 or so some single-person developer got a publisher for a game he had been working on for 10 years or something like that. It was supposed to be the next best thing to sliced bread for the space-travel-star-wars-battle games. When it came out, everyone took one look and said..."all the hype for THIS???" Needless to say, had it been released 5 years earlier, it would have really been something.... Told you so, just wait until Doug Ellison finds this thread :-) > What are they doing.....does anyone have any hard and fast info on what was > supposed to be the "crme de la crme"? Someone I know recently spoke to one of them and they're still at it apparently, which is good news I suppose, and they're very committed, I'll give them that, apparently they sold their house to fund the continuation of the project... Which is both good and bad news I suppose, shows the level of commitment, but also shows that they are flat broke at this point, which is sad as while I have my doubts about them ever finishing it, I would have been right there, credit card in hand, looking to get a copy as soon as humanly possible Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy "goyl at nettx dot no" http://www.theuspits.com "A man is only as old as the woman he feels........" --Groucho Marx--
They tried to make the best racing simulator ever, which is great, but they tried to do it in one release, which is stupid, and a perfect example of how not to undertake software development. Look at it this way, if the West's had spent 2 years making a sim that was exactly the same as GTR2002, not perfect by any means, but one of the best sims available, with some driving aids, they could have sold it commercially, raked in the cash - to plumb back into developing a newer, better version. Also, everybody in RAS would be shouting at the top of their voice about just how amazing the West's were, with their amazing sim, even modelling tyre temps / brake temps etc. Not to mention how much better the West's were compared to that roundabout Papy stuff <g>

I recently spoke with a friend who is dating a girl that works with a dude that is engaged to the barmaid that serves the West Brothers beer at a local tavern.....and HE said that they are scraping the "Racing Legends" idea and using the "CORE" of the software engine to develope a new sim based on the WILDLY popular sport of "Pinewood Derby" racing. WHEN they are finished ( he said they would have a working demo out as soon as the legal issues are ironed out with the Boy Scouts...)they will have every detail imaginable pertaining to "Derby" racing such as: 1)when you start the game, you must first use a "Virtual" set of X-acto knives to carve your piece of wood...the full version will let you choose the denisity of your block of wood!! 2) The full version will also include as many as 10 different color schemes to apply to your creation ( an intergrated paint program will be available soon after the "Official" release as an add-on for only $59.00 BUT will include at no charge a "Racing Legends" OR "World Sports Car" dust cover for your mouse!) 3)Gravity will also be modeled like never before! Choose a higher altitude for some REALLY crazy racing action! 4)If you are a "newbie" and want to get right into the action, there's always the virtual "Dad" you can choose to help you with your car.He will carve it and align your wheels for you...if you win enough races, you can trade up to a REALLY cool dad that will even paint it for you while you watch cartoons! Obviously i'm a big fan of satire...LOL I think we all get that sinking feeling when we read posts about "RL"...the whole "west Bros." thing reminds me of "The Wizard of OZ" ....It's not hard to start making comparisons after you ponder it awhile.....sigh. Derek seems to have become a legend in some circles for opening his mouth to scream at anyone that has a complaint about the game, calling them stupid (and other unprintable things) and removing posts from his forum when the disagree with him (reading the few interviews are hilarious- males you feel the interviewer wants out of there so fast). Last year he released an updated version that he said would never be able to be pirated and within 3 hours was cracked and ready to download (got it for the hell of it played it for an hour or so then toasted it) For some ungodly reason he has a deal with another publishing company and has another game in the works. Admittedly I'm outta the papyrus loop right now, but the scuttlebutt is the patch will contain base for a quick Trans AM mod correct? The closest American series to Aussie V8's is Trans Am, Horsepower is similar, I think the TA cars have a bit more Aero Downforce than the Aussies. But then the Supercars can be tweeked to touch 300kph at Bathurst and I don't think the TA cars ever get up to that pace. It would be interesting to send a Rocketsports Jag downunder to compete...ANyhooo... Since Trans AM is in the patch, an Aussie Hack of that mod should be easy. It may not be accurate, but close enough until a full conversion is attempted. dave henrie

We most certainly intend to hack one of the new physics models and making it as close to the AussieV8's as possible, just as we intend to do with the NLegends mod How close we'll get depends on how much of it we'll be able to decipher, with or without help from Papy, I have no idea if they plan to release this kind of info, but we're making nice progress with what we've got so far Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy "goyl at nettx dot no" http://www.theuspits.com "A man is only as old as the woman he feels........" --Groucho Marx--
