Notable threadJim Pearson's Isle of Man circuit for GPL
Steve Smith announced Jim Pearson's highly detailed Isle of Man TT circuit for Grand Prix Legends, which was widely praised as a masterpiece; Bruce Kennewell called it brilliantly conceived. The long thread also debated whether GPL was obsolete next to NR2003's tyre model, with Steve Smith recalling Dave Kaemmer calling GPL's tyre model primitive. Converting the track to NR2003 would require the author's permission.

Not without Jim's permission, his readme is pretty specific about that.

It's not a matter of belief, just accept it & move on ;-)
Correct me if I'm wrong here, but gpl has more tracks available for it than
any other racing sim atm. What you drive is nice, but where you drive & how
you drive are more important imo ;-)

There is a higher sense of satisfaction in GPL. There is also an historical
importance, or acceptation that you clearly don't get in F1C.

I suspect that DK's concept of 'primitive' and most other people's are
rather different. He may be a racer too, but at the end of the day he has
the heart of an engineer, and he probably feels that, quite rightly, the
stuff he's built since gpl is better. His 'best' project will very probably
be his latest one, just like every other engineer.
gpl has plenty of flaws & faults, it could be better in alot of ways, but
right now if you want to run the IOM circuit, you're going to have to load
up gpl. There are worse things you could do, Steve, and believe me, it's
worth it.

Remember, Francois is developing his own language (refer a post a couple of

Whereas English is a bastardisation of many other languages, "Ymenard" will
be a bastardisation of English.

I've just spent two hours with this circuit and am driven to say that this
is, without a shadow of a doubt, an absolute masterpiece.
Brilliantly conceived and executed, with distance compression so well
crafted that only those who have a good knowledge of the real thing would
notice.
There's been some really impressive real-world circuits created for GPL
since its inception and some of them are brilliant, not only in the artwork
but also in the driving enjoyment. These are the ones which, because they
combine the best of all aspects, sit on the very top shelf of GPL circuits.
But for Isle of Man, I've had to build a new pedestal; this creation sits
above all other road courses.
Truly a work of art.
Bruce.
P.S.
I am SO glad that Jim has rejected all thoughts of converting this for
NASCARxxxx.
To do so would be utter sacrilege.

I've just DLed it and completed my first lap. And you're definitely right!
It's a loooong time since I looked at a new track... I just don't have the
time to check them all out (or the brain to remember them well enough to
enjoy driving them :-)
Now I'm beginning to realise why the TT races are so popular, there's some
excellent driving to be had on this track. John's done a great job here,
and the only disappointment is that GPL can't handle a full length
version.
Thanks to everyone here for waking me up to this track's existence.

I was at Papyrus and got to see GPL when it was still on the drawing boards.
The day I was there they had the first working beta of Nascar 2 and I
wasn't
even interested. I just wandered around looking at all the terrific art work
and
modeling on GPL. It blew me away then and I had to keep my mouth shut for
a long time because until it got leaked by Sierra no one even knew it was
being
worked on.
GPL is a Classic and always will be but the physics are archaic and out
of date
compared to N2003. If the physics can be transfered over to other venues of
racing
there will be no comparison.
I'm looking forward to not living in the past.

I can guarantee you one thing - the older you get the more you value the
past and the day will come when you also hold on to a favourite. And the
older you get the less you feel like "moving on"........unless you are
terminally ill.
I have no objections to seeing NASCAR 2003 modded to the hilt.
It can spawn umpteen different classes of racing machines and I should
bloody well hope that the physics ARE different to those in GPL.
However, what *I* do NOT want on MY computer is a bunch of tin-tops
bellowing around the Isle of Man and if Jim Pearson feels the same about his
circuit then I think it's wonderful.
Now.....perhaps this will give someone the incentive to do a mod of N2003
which will pop out a gaggle of Norton's, Triumph's,
Ducati's....................

You know, guys, I've always felt that there's hardly ever a racecar unsuited
to a certain track or track type. Rather, it's the drivers who are unsuited
to the cars, or who don't have real racing blood in their veins, because in
all modesty, if you're a racer, you take the vehicle you can get hold of,
make the best of it and _race_ against whoever will give you a race :-)
Achim
P.s.: CP is one of the circuits I'm dreaming of getting converted to N2k3,
the Nascars are a _blast_ at Monaco, and the Nascar RC league I'm driving in
has - at least in its top division - a lot less carnage than most GPL
leagues :-)

I'm only a few years behind you and yes I do have a
potential terminal illness.
I understand peoples favourites and obsessions but I think people have
gone a little over board on ocassion myself included.
Just because it says Nascar(big boat) doesn't mean the engine can't and
won't be used for many other types of racing. It wouldn't surprise me at
some
point if we don't see a GPL2 from this physics model.
I strongly suspect "Project Wildfire" is more than meets the eye. I can
only
go on my gut feelings from past dealings with a certain company that many
interesting "projects" may be in the works.
I have lots of free time to think about the past and it doesn't produce
much
in the way of productive results.
If you and the other poster wan't to trash me for asking about it being
converted
to N2003 I guess I could ignore you or be like John S. and give you some
personal
direction.
As far as filling your computer with a bunch of "Tin Tops" thats your
choice. I like
all forms of motorsports and don't object in the least to any conversions to
whatever form
it may take or evolve into.
If Jim Pearson chooses not to convert it thats his choice, it would be a
shame.
But if some purist or elitist view on your part or his turns your crank,
enjoy.
It never ceases to amaze me how a simple question can get turned into
trash talking
spectacle.

That doesn't mean it's a good thing to do, though, does it? :-)
I still remember with awe and fascination the small yellow Lotus cars racing
against Opel Diplomats, the modified Fiats, Cobras (some of them drove home
on the public streets after the race), the Triumphs, Austin Healeys or MG's
and all the others race around the Norisring in the era ~40 years ago. I can
actually still see some of the racing scenes before me. And I can hear the
awesome sounds of I forget what they were called at the time - prototypes?
Single-seaters with a sound that shook your bones so deeply you'd bite your

But I'll also recognise when something new and good is coming my way in
terms of racing, and I'll enjoy it with just as much pleasure as I enjoyed
those ancient racecars :-)

I think if pressed I'd have to say that the creator's wishes should be
honoured. But a big part of me says this is such a great track (in
driving terms and as an example of excellent craftsmanship) that the
wider the audience, the better. And if it were to be secretly converted
I'd secretly download it and feel a little guilty.
One thing I *really* enjoy about the N2003 engine is the variable
lighting conditions. IoM, like so many of GPL's great tracks, would
benefit from the extra "life" that lighting can breathe into the
experience. Well, for me anyway!

Andrew, the main advantage N2k3 has over GPL for me personally is the
dramatically more advanced tire model. Driving the same track in GPL and
N2k3, the track will feel endlessly more real to me in N2k3 than it does in
GPL. I'll feel things I'd never feel in GPL driving that same track.
Hence, converting a track to N2k3 will bring out its true beauty. It'll make
it _really_ shine in terms of immersion and the feeling of 'being there' for
me.

Oh, I agree Achim, though it wasn't until I drove N2003 on some of the
converted GPL tracks that I was able to really appreciate some of the
advances in realism and "feel". Which is why I agree with...
> Driving the same track in GPL and N2k3, the track will feel

I drove Zandvort in N2003 for the first time last week and it was far
*far* more enjoyable than I ever expected. It was always my favourite
track for GPL and now... well, now it doesn't feel quite the same in GPL
any more!
I sort of feel like I've been unfaithful :-)
Of course having been enthusiastic about N2003, I'm really excited by
the prospect of driving something a little less Nascar-flavoured in the
rumoured mod/s. Though I must admit to being confused by those mods...
why aren't Papyrus/Sierra doing it themselves and making money on it?
All will no doubt be revealed!
Andrew McP
Hi Andrew,
> I sort of feel like I've been unfaithful :-)
Among the GPL beta testers we were an extremely dedicated and enthusiastic
bunch for GPL at the time. And at its time, GPL was no doubt the best ever,
and it's still a milestone in physics modelling, and online capability.
There's no doubt about it.
But, life goes on, and you've got to move on with it - or else you'll be
left behind, hold everyone else up, and miss a lot of the good stuff that's
happening.
I wouldn't want to fall for every silly new fashion or pseudo-ism some of
the younger folks get drawn into, but I'd like to bring the good stuff from
the past with me and try to integrate it with the good new stuff. Holding
everyone else up isn't what a racer wants to do, does he, except on the last
lap if he's leading but can't go full speed anymore :-)
Like you, I'm looking forward with excitement to the modified physics
commonly labelled TransAm. I'm hoping for them to open the door for a couple
of mods besides PWF's TransAm mod, and I sincerely hope they'll resemble a
bit more the street racecars we Europeans are used to.
But until then, I'll race using the sim which gets closest to reality, and I
won't waste a second thinking about what they or what a racecar should be or
should not be. If it's got decent horsepower and cornering speed, it
qualifies as a racecar for me :-)

I LIKE the past, mate! Some of the best things to ever happen to me occurred
in the past (so did some of the worst, but we won't go into that!). In fact,
what I just typed is now in the past. :)
I also like a lot about the present - a hell of a lot.
(Not too sure about the future, though.)
But when it comes to racing sims, I LOVE the past, totally HATE the present.
SO I don't give a rat's arse if "GPL 2" never sees the light of day.
In fact, the one thing that I'm hanging out for at the moment is the 1965
mod for GPL, followed by the 1950's mod.
If they both see the light of day then GPL will be on my computer well into
the next century.
Cheers, Pete!
Bruce.
Why not??
Holding onto those things which you treasure never hurt anyone......that's
why nostalgia is such big business and why (amongst other things) car
manufacturers and movie makers are recycling themes, albeit with a 21st.
century bent.
The day that GPL ceases to give me enjoyment will be a day that it is
replaced by something very, VERY special indeed.
If that happens to be a mod for NASCAR2003, well and good, so long as the
mod is in tune with the circuit on which it is intended to race.
See, Joachim, although it probably makes no sense to you whatsoever, I use
GPL a little differently to most of you.
My settings are "realistic", for a start.
As an example, I don't bottom-out the suspension to get the car as low as
possible; I use settings which are closer to historical reality, within the
constraints of the program, that is.
I don't run 1967 F1 season races on anything other than the circuits that
were used (including that bloody dreadful "Mickey Mouse" thing called Le
Mans - Bugatti).
All the add-on circuits I simply use for single races.
There are a couple of other silly "conditions" to which I try and adhere but
they're more to do with the teams and drivers.
As far as I'm concerned, I am a "GPL fan" - NOT necessarily in the general
category of "Race-Sim fan".
Do you understand my idiosyncrasy now? :)
Bruce.

Hi Bruce,
I see where you're coming from, and of course I respect your attitude and
personal preferences.
But, I'd like to race IoM in N2k3 for various reasons, and am of course not
happy when I see people applauding Jim for not converting it.
I think it wouldn't distract from your enjoyment of your own way of racing
when others raced whatever other cars at the IoM - unless you met them there

It looks like it took a thousand monks a thousand years to finish all the

But what if the 1950's mod is created using Nascar 2003 as platform?
If it in one month becomes evident that the N2k3 platform is similar to GPL
but easier to mod, I'd be surprised if the modders doesn't switch platform
much like the F1-200X modders now use F1C.
To me, it isn't a big deal how they create it. I'm just happy to be here
when it happens :-)

Achim, I own and race a prokart. These karts are
the_most_disgusting_to_drive racing vehicles available, but probably the
cheapest (one of anyway) form of motor racing you can get involved in.
Real world racing being very expensive, I just have to make do with the
old prokark in all it's disgustingness!
But at least in sim racing I can afford to exercise my preference! :)

Open yes, but it might have some limits that we're not aware of yet
simply because we haven't tried to model a vehicle that differs that
much from a Nascar Stocker, and while we done some work on the physics,

I sometimes wonder that about 3rd party tracks too, but I don't worry too
much about it, and I guess the track makers know what they're doing ;-)
The IOM circuit is a public road course except for about 50ft of someone's
driveway iirc, so I doubt anyone will be bothered, plus technically it's not
the IOM, so in this particular case it wouldn't be an issue anyway.
Damn well looks like it though ;-)

I'd say that there's probably little chance of that happening, Joachim.
I've dabbled in on-line racing but, due to personal time constraints,
usually end up giving it away. RASCAR is the most recent example.
I "drive" for the entertainment and if the AI is half reasonable, that's
fine by me.
In GPL I get the vast majority of my pleasure simply by the excellence of
tracks such as IoM.
But your point is valid - about converting IoM. But then so is that of the
person who created it and I endorse his personal wishes concerning no NASCAR
tin on the course.
You never know - if someone creates a superb mod for historic GP cars he
might well change his mind.

Sad?
Hmmm.....maybe, Mark.
But then so would be the situation of someone "raping" the creation of one
simply to satisfy their own desires, I s'pose.
I'm not "happy about restricted choice", Mark, I'm happy to support someone
who doesn't want their work bastardised because they prefer not to have that
happen.
And as one who has some artistic ability, I can understand from where Jim is
coming.

Maybe I misunderstood Bruce, but I wanted to point out that Jim's only said
he won't do it himself, and that any conversions made by others need his
prior consent. I.e., he might one day give his permission to someone else,
when someone asks.
All my replies regarding that topic are in that little sub-branch of this

I'm deeply into GPL as well, and am much less 'into' Nascar (being

I certainly wouldn't disagree, that point is where Bruce & I differ. Sorry

There are literally hundreds of great tracks for gpl, it annoys me somewhat
that there seems to be so much chat about converting the one (to my
knowledge) track where the maker has specifically put their opinion across
on the matter.

But the creation wouldn't be changed in the slightest. It's the
chance to drive different cars on the same track. The track is the
creation. I have no idea about the motivations of the creator, or
even if he is against other sims making use of his track, but I sure
as hell know that if *I* had spend hours/days/months on creating a
great track, I'd want to drive it in anything I could get my hands on.
> I'm not "happy about restricted choice", Mark, I'm happy to support someone

Still not sure about how driving a different car on an unchanged track
can be considered:
A - A bastardisation (the track is not changed)
B - Anything other than positive. As others have posted, the N2K3
physics can bring GPL tracks to life in a way not possible with GPL
itself.
> And as one who has some artistic ability, I can understand from where Jim is
> coming.
To set out my stall, then. I have little artistic ability but I do
have enthusiasm and have contributed, albeit in a very small way, to
the sim-racing world by helping run a couple of leagues (costs me time
*and* money) and painting cars for members. Also I've had the
pleasure of being involved - again only in a minor way - with a
privateer race team creating mock-ups in N2K3 for the team's
sponsorship proposals.
*If* Jim is wanting this to be a GPL-only production, I can *not*
understand where he's coming from.
In no way do I want this to be a NASCAR vs historic F1 discussion. It
would be great to see the track converted for F1C which would open up
even more possibilities for different hardware to be blatted around
the superb course.
To labour the point even more ;)...
How can willingly restricting the audience for such a great creation
be in any way a positive thing?
Regards,
Mark

Thanks for the explanation. I wasn't construing anything btw, I was just
asking because I hadn't understood.
As for the longer add-on tracks - I'd guess the longer the track, the longer
it takes to create the track and all the environment involved. Maybe N2k3
simply isn't hasn't been available for long enough time for someone to
already have created a really long track for N2k3 - considering that IoM
took a year to create, and anyone creating for N2k3 will first have to learn
how to make tracks for this sim as well.

Yes, Ruud. That's about it.
I cannot stand modern F1, for example, and the Aussie V8 series is a
travesty of what touring car racing used to be like back in the late 1960's
through the 1970's and into the 1980's. Once again, as we old blokes have
seen, it's motor racing tailored for TV.
Because F1 of the mid 1950's through the 1960's is part of my real world I
associate very strongly with it. That was the time, after all, when I
developed an interest in motor racing - F1 in particular.
Jack Brabham becoming world champ also helped to amplify that interest.
It is a known fact amongst those who study human behaviour that the things
and events with which we are most comfortable and with which we have the
closest associations all stem from our formative years, particularly those
between the ages of 10 and 25. After that period we settle into a groove
and, even as the years pass, we look back on our youth with mostly fond
memories....rose coloured glasses, for sure, but that's the way our brains
work.
So that's why I love that period in motor racing, because that's when my
association started.
Now, if N2003 could spin off mods for F1 of the 1950's when those glorious
Lancia, Mercedes, Ferrari, Maserati, BRM, Vanwall etc cars were in the
forefront, I'd become a drooling fool (or drooling more than I do at the
moment).
Or if mods such as the Can-Am of the 1960's and the Trans-Am of the 1960's
were developed, I'd become a gibbering idiot.
I love most of the technology of the present day and if that can be put to
good use in giving us historical simulations, that's fabulous in my book.
Regards,
Bruce.

Aaah! Well, that's totally different then, I'm sure you'd agree.
You THINK that's the reason.
That's how nasty, vicious and often damaging rumours start, you know.
And your not liking His Lordship and referring to him as you did irks me
because you make an immediate, on-the-spot determination about the
personality of someone you've never, ever had a conversation with and that
assessment is based on innuendo, gossip and third-party "information".
I don't know what Lord March is like; he could be the Devil Incarnate or the
Angel Gabriel but until I actually met, conversed with and had some on-going
interaction with the person I would keep my mind wide-open.
That's a philosophy which has stood me in good stead all my adult life, in
both business and personal relationships.

Speaking of pubs.........
At one of the races at Longford (Tasmania) back in the 1950's, Lex
Davidson's car conked out at the corner on which the Longford pub stood, so
Lex hopped out, went into the bar and spent the rest of the race having a
few beers and spectating from a window!

In a free society I'm free to theorize. What's your best guess? Or are
you to shy to form an opinion on this issue?

I don't like his views, which, BTW, are in the public domain. He has
been exhibited a few traits of twatism over the years. I think GWB is a
twat too, never met the chap of course, but I still think he's a draft
dodging twat. Although I don't know for sure he dodged the draft, I only
heard it third hand!
> I don't know what Lord March is like; he could be the Devil Incarnate or the

So you don't know if he's a twat or not. But your happy to form an
opinion about me, although we've never met!? Your happy to form that
opinion on only what I've posted here?
But in your humble opinion, I'm wrong to pass judgment on his Lordship
formed on what he has written and done over the years, it that right, is
that your POV?
> That's a philosophy which has stood me in good stead all my adult life, in

So Hitler wasn't evil, IYO, because the facts are all third party? You
never met the chap, don't forget!
Oh yeah, also remember that I lives near Goodwood for the first twenty
years of my life!
Who's "GWB", Gerry?
As for the rest of your post, as you say, you're entitled to your opinions,
certainly.
It's how you go about forming them that may be open to question.
I have no opinion on Lord March; I know less about him than I do about Kim
Il Sung.
And I said that your were exhibiting some twatish traits....not that you
*are* one. A big difference, old chap.
I have no opinion of you - for all I know you could be a 22 year old female
mouldscraper who collects butterflies and likes crocheting. Then again you
might well be the 65 year-old gatekeeper at Goodwood and have a beef about
the Lord.
There is no way of knowing and that's a reason why I do NOT form opinions
about those I come across on the 'net: I will critique what they *SAY*, not
who or what they might (or might not) be.
Bruce.
There have only been a couple of scratch-built N2003 tracks. Most are
conversions. I'm guessing most track designers are waiting for the
track-building tools alledgedly part of the forthcoming N2003 patch.

And wouldn't it be nice to have this TT circuit ready and running for those
car...
;-)
Regards,
Mark
Sorry, ovals don't even show up on my radar. I meant the new road
circuits...which aren't over 5 miles, either (except for conversions like
the Nurburgring). All I meant to imply is that nobody's going to expend a
lot of time and effort to create any new tracks with a whole set of (free)
tools supposedly right around the corner. Thereafter, I reckon, we'll
quickly discover what limitations are built in. I'd hope for a 24-hour race
with GT Prototypes and production GTs, but who knows?

Oh...HIM!
Down Here we just refer to the US President as "Bush" (or if one is a
respected, serious journalist then it's "President Bush").
We don't use the nick-names or acronyms which are predominant in the North
Americas, or even in Europe, I imagine.
In fact, most of the time I think that we try and ignore him. ("We" being
the general populace, not necessarily the politicians).
Oh...and thanks so much for the "childlike innocence" bit, Gerry. Most
quaint.
Bruce.
Has that site now incorporated pop-ups, Steve? :(
(I have a filter, so was not aware of it).
Sorry about that.....if I ever get the time I'll move that entire collection
to my current server.
But you're correct, Longford, if created with the same artistic flair as
IoM, would make wonderful addition; Reims with a few more wiggly bits!
It's very picturesque and if set in the late 1950's - mid 1960's it would be
delightful.
(That section of track passing under the railway viaduct is bloody
dangerous, though!)
