RASCAR Indianapolis race recap and pace car confusion

RASCAR league members recapped their NR2003 race at Indianapolis, which Mitch won after two pit stops on the final caution. Much of the discussion concerned a restart where several drivers failed to pass the pace car, partly because of a spotter bug, putting half the field a lap down. Drivers also traded apologies for contact and floated the idea of human spotters and crew chiefs via voice chat.

Good clean racing for the most part. I think some got stuck behind the pace car when they should have passed it. Congrats Mitch. I didn't know if you were going to make it back up to the front but I knew that if I didn't take on 4 new tires, I was toast. Did you pit twice on that last yellow? See all at the Glen. Grub

Yeah I had to stop twice. Dang pit crew was on ludes all dam day :)) First stop I was too far left and could only get rights. As we went back to racin she was all over the place and buckin hard. I lost it comin outta 2 but everyone was on the ball and missed me and I came away with only a flat lf tar. I limped around and was told I got a bf for debris :) Right after that somewhere around T3-4 was the big one of the day. Had I not screwed the pooch earlier in that same lap I woulda been right in the middle of it, whewww. 2nd stop I went about a foot to far and I backed up and waited, and waited then I figured I was still to far forward so popped it in reverse just in time to see my guys go running back onto the wall. I had to come around again but really only lost a couple spots. Somewhere in there BamaDano and I got together. I think it was warp as I didnt actually feel anything but sry anyway. Just want to say thanks to Brian Oster. We had some good racin this week. Also sorry for the bump in T2. I knew Id have to keep it wound way tight or you woulda had me on the exit. With so few laps to go I just had to push it. Sorry bud! I hate to win under a contact situation for sure, but Ill take it :)) Mitch "grub" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > Good clean racing for the most part. When noone jumped in before the race started I closed it. I do not know what kind of performance hit I will take with it running. I was thinkin, this sim needs real spoters and/or crew chief who can change your set-ups for you, watch your line, and talk pit stuff. My brother would love to log on and spot for me using RW. If he only had a special 'crew chief' screen complete with a camera and a list of stuff to do to my car when I come in to pit. He would get to call all the pit shots and all I got to do is drive and tell him what the car is doing. papy you listening? grub "Mitch_A" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:b0ZWa.338$[email hidden]...

It was a fun race. The last 5 laps of the race are when you are supposed to race hard and get aggressive and things like that will happen fom time to time... just one of those deals. BTW, everyone really needs to learn the NASCAR rules (not RASCAR, NASCAR). I put half the field down a lap because someone didn't go around the pace car on the next to last caution. I don't have the energy to try and explain it now, but if you look at the replay you will see what happened. Also, along the same lines. When a caution comes out you need to hurry up to the end of the pacing line and get as close to the car in front of you as you safely can. The racing doesn't stop when a yellow comes out, its still going on in the pits. If you don't intend to pit and lag behind the car in front of you, you have prevented the guy behind you from having any kind of chance of gaining a spot on pit road. A 2 tire strategy can go right out the window if the guy in front of you is 5 seconds behind the field. I am not saying that happened today, but I have seen it before and it is kinda one of my pet peeves. Brian Oster

When it dropped down to "normal" level (320-330ms) my game crashed a first time. It crashed a 2nd time as I was trying to avoid a pile-up down s/f. When I got back on the server and went to track I got a eoll penalty for entering a closed pit... ok, there's a 2nd thing to check when one reconnects. 1: wait for entry list to fill up, 2: check pitlane 2 camera for pitlane status. <sigh> Apart from losing the laps, the race went really well for me. Really had confidence in the car and was able to run my pace. Jan. =---

It's a bug in the sim that tends to confuse people. The spotter incorrectly tells you that you've taken the caution and your (natural?) reaction is to not pass the pace car. The long and short of it is that if you're not the leader, you damn sure should NOT be the first car behind the pace car. If you take the caution and you're between the pace car and the leader, go ahead and pass the pace car and catch up to the end of the pace line. HOWEVER, you MUST pass the pace car BEFORE he crosses the S/F line or you'll be stuck at the tail end of the lap you're really on, and you will have also screwed everyone behind you.

I was in 2nd when the caution flew, and was too stupid to realize you had lapped half of the field. For the folks that weren't there, I was a good 5 seconds behind in 2nd nursing a bad RF. The caution was a blessing! Anyhow, I took two tires thinking I needed to maintain my track position, but if I had known what had happened, I would've taken 4. I should've come in to take left sides before the green, but I wasn't quick enough to put it all together. Great race, I had one blunder, which caused some damage to Bluestringer at the beginning, but 3rd place gives me some new hope. Congrats to Mitch for the win. BTW, how funny was it when Larry congratulated Brian for the win, when in reality, he had just got put into the wall by Mitch, then when he found out, he quickly congratulated Mitch. Maybe not funny for you, Brian, but it was a funny moment. :)

Someone said pass the pace car, so I did. The game keep telling me to stay behind the 00. I was already a lap down because I had to pit under green and the pit crew took a while to repair some damage I had from the 1st lap contact with the 31 car, but it showed me 2 laps down until I passed the pace car, I was then back to 1 lap down, which was correct. bluestringer

Well put. You can't rely on the spotter to tell you when to pass the pace car... he's a dumb ass. You have to know what is going on. Brian Oster

Maybe a re-wording is in order. I didnt *put him in the wall*. He was pinching down I was trying to set up an entry into 2. We met halfway :)) The guy on the outside nearly always takes the brunt. I was yellin my head off for everyone to go :) Some of us finally got around, but I guess a few others got screwed. I had to get them moving because I couldn't pass them or I would have been BF'd. Then after we finally got past it, one of the cars (I don't remember which) was just putting along. I _finally_ got that car moving and we finally caught up with the field. The entire thing messed up any sort of pit strategy. -Larry "EldredP" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

I was actually getting a handle on this track and haulin' ass pretty good. Unfortunately, on Lap 25 a car bounced off the wall and came down in to me. I hit the binders hard to try and avoid it but then got creamed in the rear by another car. No fault to the car behind me, he didn't have ANY time to react. And, of course, I got the traditional "Engine Damage" for being hit in the rear. Dammit I HATE That. From there I just had to stay out of everyone's way and accept a 9th place finish. -Larry "grub" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > Good clean racing for the most part. Didn't you have to server your BF under green though? Looks like you would have gone a lap down... unless you could get in and get out before the field came back around in which case, its a pretty genious move. Brian Oster On 05 Aug 2003 12:29:41 GMT, [email hidden] (EldredP) wrote:
