RASCAR: The Glen Times

RASCAR drivers compare Watkins Glen lap times

Ahead of the RASCAR race at Watkins Glen, drivers posted their NR2003 practice lap times, mostly in the 1:15 to 1:18 range, and were startled by reports of a 1:12.9. They discussed tyre wear over a race distance, front lockups and driving aids. Plenty of joking filled the thread, including a gag about lap times being read as speeds.

Guys, post your times. The best ive done so far is 1:17.50 during a race. Avg about 1.18-1.19. grub

I've done a 1:14 qual and 1:15 in race. And that's still slow. :o( Plus those were with my own setups, I can't get much below 1:17 with the fast setup. Need to be down in the 1:12's to be competitive. "grub" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

I saw one of the new guys do a 1:12.9... I'm doing 1:16's consistently, and I saw Eldred do three 1:17's in a row. :) 1:12's lap after lap are gonna force you into the pits long before everyone else. In article <[email hidden]>, [email hidden] says...

Okay I don't really race online so I guess I don't know for sure. I was basing that statement on the fact that a) the real guys are running 1:11's and 1:12's, b) If you set the AI at 100% they run 1:12's and 1:13's, c) I think the NR2003 record is around 1:09, so add 3 seconds to that for a reasonable race lap and you get 1:12, d) I have downloaded and analyzed 1:12 laps in NR2003RA and they don't appear to be doing anything that would be impossible for a good driver to achieve with the fast setup, e) if I can do an occasional 1:14, shame on anybody who can't do better! ;o) "Brian Oster" <bgoster@swbell**nosmap**.net> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

You can run 1:19's with the FAST setup using the keyboard and driving aids :-) Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy "goyl at nettx dot no" http://www.theuspits.com "A man is only as old as the woman he feels........" --Groucho Marx--

With all the mods for f1 2k2 this past year, I've bascially ignored the Papy side for quite some time. Got online the other day At Watkins, had a flat and then a lockup in the esses within 3 laps...just like old times for me!!! The average times with that group were 1:18's to 19's. One guy was faster than that. I was quite a-bit slower. dave henrie

"You can run 1:19's with the FAST setup using the keyboard and driving aids :-)" Well, Damn, my keyboard looks a whole hell of a lot like a wheel, and I've been in the sand enough to know that the driving aids are not turned on. I can manage 1:19, and I even put it in the grass at turn 1. Maybe if I keep it on the track, I'm a 1:18? I am embarrassed to drive this track so shitty, having grown up in the area. I used to watch Andretti, Lauda, and the boys mix it up when I was a kid. Loved the 6 wheel Elf car. Used to camp right where the cars would come up hill from the boot. Saw Jacques Villenueve (sr.) spin out, and then just jump on it to turn himself around again. Those were the days! I have all of the graphics turned on, but I still haven't seen the crazies burning cars in "The Bog". Back to reality. I have a lot of work to do. Some papy online races proves the point that if you can stay out of trouble, you can have a good finish by default. Most everyone will end up in the grass at some point, and you can cruise on by. My goals for this weekend are: 1. finish; 2. keep it off the grass; 3. keep it off the roof. 4. try not to get consecutive BF's for speeding in the pits - 35 is awfully slow and going downhill is a bitch. Well I just spent some time with the fast setup and just about deleted the game in frustration. After two weeks of playing nothing but F1C trying to wrestle a cup car around a road course just feels horrible. In half an hour I managed a very sloppy 1:16.6 with the fast setup before I gave up. Half an hour was all I could stand. I have definitely done better with my own setups. The fast setup has the brake bias way too far forward, which means you are always cooking the front tires on every corner entry. Plus like many cup car setups they use track bar rather than rear ARB to balance the rear, which leaves it with no bite in the rear tires and a nasty tendency for the rear to whip around without any way to save it. Drop the track bar and balance the rear with the ARB instead and it will stop fishtailing out of every corner. If you set these things up like a road car instead of a dragster they are faster and more stable. I was really thinking I might join you guys for this one race, but after that experience, no thanks. I'm off to Hungary for a little F1 practice. "Jan Verschueren" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:FXuXa.47749$[email hidden]...

I'm running in the 15's and 16's, but for the race will probably drop the pace a bit to conserve the tyres and try to avoid front lockups. Guess I'll be down the back keeping Eldred company, thats if I get on the invite list (hint...hint Eldred:o) ) Steve

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that this was without any assists except autoclutch. Are you needing any assists to maintain your tyres that long? I was in the 1:15s whilst doing this. Maybe I was still pushing too hard. I am racing one-handed (after miter saw accident) and using auto- trans, stability, and some steering assist, and just trying to stay out of everyone's way. I usually don't use any aids on roadies excepot auto--clutch, but injury is kinda forcing me to. I'm doing 1:16's and 1:17's, and treating the brake pedal real easy...

I backed off as best I could. I struggle real hard not to push, even when practising. :) Was mainly in the 1:16 range with some in the 1:15's and some in the 1:17's generally. I still found that the fronts would end up in the yellows by lap 9 or 10 at the latest, though I found that this didn't slow me down by much and was still able to do 1:17's or better. The most laps I have managed before locking up was 12 laps though, after which the tyres have been ready to burst. Also, I still found it easy to lockup, even when being more gentle with the brake pedal because, if I was too gentle I would suddenly realise I was going to carry too much speed into the corner and would then brake harder. To avoid this sudden excessive braking, what I've tried to discipline myself to do in those situations is to change down an extra gear to help slow the car down. This seems to help avoid those sudden tyre lockups and still gets me through the corner without running off, though I'm still not conditioned enough to do this automatically. Also, I've noticed that changing down as early as possible helps a lot with braking (ie. engine braking) whilst helping to avoid tyre lockups and, so far, I haven't noticed any mechanical gremlins as a consequence of this. Though its still early days. One possible little tip to avoid oversteering out of the slower corners. Pick a spot off the track and try to drive towards it. For instance, out of T1 I have chosen the green light off the track towards the left, by the armco. If I steer towards that (keeping it in the left front window section when using in-car view) it consciously makes me avoid turning in too much under acceleration out of the corner. Once I know the car is relatively straight I can then start looking further down the track as normal. -- Peter Ives (AKA Pete Ivington) Remove ALL_STRESS before replying via email If you know what's good for you, don't listen to me :) GPLRank Joystick -50.63 Wheel -21.77

You tell 'em John :-) Jerry
Just did a solo tyre run off line. Managed 29 laps, with f/l down to 25% rears at 50%. not fast times. Real easy on the brakes though. Under race conditions, I expect a little more tyre wear... So if you take it easy, you should be in good shape to have a hard run at the end with a top up of fuel and fresh tires. Im running low 17's without pushing. Tires go into yellow at lap 13-14....could push into the 16's but surely will eat up the tires. Probabley just hang back with the others and see where we end up. mike (shamrock 28)

Ok, I'm down into the low 1:16's and high 1:15's now, with no assits. Well, I do use the driving line to help with braking points :) I have no idea how hard I'm being on the car though. Only time will tell. And, for me at least, Stability Assist was costing me a second a lap. My biggest problem is consistent speeds into that wacko chicane they put in a few years ago, and I still lock up the RF going into 1 too much. -Larry "McWhom" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

I just raced a 14 lap pickup race online and represented RASCAR well with a flag to flag win. Here is the replay if you want to see what to expect from me on Saturday. I think I should be competitive with the non-aliens among us. My fast lap in this race was a 1:14.6something. I backed off after getting a good lead and caught some traffic at the end. http://mysite.verizon.net/res1dja7/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles/glen_ 8_7_03.zip Kyle
good one, I'll pay that one. Did 25 laps last night. Started off in the mid 1:16's, progressed to the mid-low 1:15's, then towards the end was back to mid-high 1:16's. I guess that'll do... -Larry "Larry" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:FTdYa.8896$ug.3338@lakeread01...
