RASCAR Watkins Glen race recap and pit penalty confusion

RASCAR drivers reported on a caution-free NR2003 race at Watkins Glen, praised the clean racing, and several said road courses should run without yellows. A driver asked why his pit-lane black flag would not clear, and others explained the difference between drive-through and stop-and-go penalties. A side discussion covered braking-point differences and early braking causing first-lap pileups.

Good race. No yellows. Congrats to Michael, who posted the some speeds with the fast setup that I would have thought impossible. grub

Sorry to Larry for punting you in lap 1/2, I realised too late I couldnt use my normal braking point :-( I was runnig steady from then, but got a disco around lap 21. When I returned in the race and was put in my pitstall a very strange thing happened - someone drove through me and I was thrown backwards with a very high force causing me to swirle to the beginning of pit road where John just came in - hope you managed to get by safely.

It's a very normal thing to happen, that's why I keep shouting at people when I see them drive through stalls at any point in a race. I've found out the hard way, when reconnecting, it's very important to wait for your entry list to fill up before going to track. Otherwise your game might start getting position updates on another car and show it to you when you're right on top of it. Jan. =---

Well, I enjoyed the first race with you guys. Hope I wasn't too much of a moving road block for you. I tried to give room when it was safe to do so. Started off one lap down. Had do disconnect(for the first time ever online, I was getting screen lockups:o( ) and by the time I got back in the start sequence had started and had to start from pit lane. Sorry again to Tim (car#2). My wife forgot it was my first race with you guys and didn't tell my 4 year old kid to stay away from the 'puter room. I was going to give you room, but my kid grabbed my arm and turned me into you. Steve

I need someone to help me understand how to clear black flags. I was doing well until my pitstop at about 1/2 distance. After the stop I was informed that I had been black flagged for speeding in the pitlane. I stopped on the next lap without speeding. The crew changed my tires and off I went only to be told I would be DQ'd if I didn't serve the penalty. I then stopped on the next lap (having turned off the tire change) and left the pits when the voice said go, go, go. I was then booted (DQ'd from the race). I never saw the official with the stop watch. Did I do it incorrectly? I thought you just had to stop in your spot to clear it. Thanks, Spark

Did your spotter tell you it was a stop-n-go, or a drive through penalty. If it's a drive through, it won't clear if you stop. If it's a stop-n-go, it won't clear if you drive thru without stopping.
Thanks John. That is something I did not know. I think the same thing screwed up another race for me also. Oh well, the race was fun while it lasted for me. I think that has to do with speeding entering or exiting. I tend to speed entering. Michigan is loosey Goosey, I can run around good till I want to try to pass someone, then I seem to loose my arc and spin, over and over. I have a week to figure this out though. Sean

True he was winking out and hopping around quite a bit. We may even have "warp touched" at one point. If we did I'm sorry. > Jan, why did you "give back" that lap when I let you lap me? > Thanks! ;-) You're welcome. I was trying to do a no-stopper (possible if one can run in clean air a lot), so I couldn't risk locking up a wheel trying to keep you behind. The tyres had lost their edge by then and eventhough I was lapping 8/10ths to a second quicker than while I was bottled up behind you, you still caught up, so I chose minimum time loss and let you back around. This time around you were able to stay ahead and I ended up having to pit anyway so no harm no foul. I would have gained some time (and you too, possibly) if you'd let me around immediately, but probably not enough to have had a shot at Neil in the end. Jan. =---

Did you get a drive thru, or a stop & go? I suspect you got a drive-thru. If you actually stop when you have a drive-thru penalty, it won't count :( I got bit by this earlier in the year. -Larry "spark" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:7QeZa.177763$[email hidden]... > I need someone to help me understand how to clear black flags. Sean, Here's a tip for you. Try this. First, you may be slowing down _too_ much. That's bad, because it takes air off the rear spoiler. Practice with the racing line. The markers are decent for this track. Before you let up on the gas for the corner, pre-load the brakes just a _tad_. This may help you keep the car straight. NOTE - I _think_ this applies at Michigan. I haven't started practice there yet, but this trick helps a ton at places like Richmond, and Richmond is basically a troll-sized Michigan :) Also, you don't have to let up on the gas much here. Just 1/4 throttle or so. Letting up too much, going in too slow, etc... will get you into worse trouble here than going in to hot. You can deal with too hot as you'll just wash up a bit. Start off by purposely going in too hot, then back off a little more each time until you find just the right amount. Of course, this will change as your tires wear and the fuel burns off as the car will become tighter, especially off the corners. Finally, you get back into the gas pretty early here. Don't just floor it. Feather the gas in slowly. You want to be back at full throttle just as the car is pointing straight again. Any combination of the above or all will help. -Larry "McWhom" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

No problem :) The start of that happened in front of us. I don't know whether it started with the car in front of me, or further up the line, but someone braked WAY, WAY too early going into the Bus Stop and it caused a daisy-chain effect. I had to slam on the brakes to keep from hitting the car in front of me, and we were no where near the normal braking point :( -Larry "JJ" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:3f356d2a$0$49111$[email hidden]...

I was just reminding you to be *aware* of such a situation. Say you're following someone, and you normally brake at the 100 marker. The person you're following brakes at the 300 marker, you're caught unawares, and punt him. Who's fault is that crash? Eldred -- Homepage - http://www.umich.edu/~epickett Remove SPAM-OFF to reply.

Then there is the situation we had at Watkins Glen. I was ahead of Larry and watching the car in front of me closely for braking as we were deep in the field on the first lap of the race with a tight pack in front. I was watching for early braking, I also probably ( most likely) braked too hard. :-( Sean "EldredP" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...
