NASCAR Racing 4 listing and rumours of leaked builds

A retailer listing for NASCAR Racing 4 prompted speculation about whether it would use GPL-style physics. Pete claimed to have seen leaked builds that were a stripped-down GPL engine. Papyrus's Joel Belog questioned the beta-tester claims, saying no builds had gone out to testers. Goy Larsen's April Fool's claim that N4 would drop the AI fooled several readers.

I was browsing the other day and came upon www.sim-world.com which I hadn't visited in a while. (Nice job by the way). Anyway, I clicked on one of the adversti***ts which was www.gamestop.com This is a software company like Electronics Boutique I guess. Anyway, I did a search for NASCAR and the following came up: NASCAR Racing 4 Genre: Simulation Publisher: Havas Developer: Sierra $49.99 Ship Date: 10/16/00 What's this about? I haven't heard anything about it....or have I been out of the loop? The publisher is Havas??? Is this a wrong entry in their website???? Any information would be appreciated!!! Lee Mills

Havas owns Sierra. As for the validity of the release date, don't bet the farm. If places like Gamestop and EB World don't have an official release date from a publisher, they will often make one up.
Lee Mills 28 Mar 2000#523952
But is there a website out there that even gives us a hint of what to expect on this version of NR??? I mean, I didn't really realize that they were developing this simulation. I know they are always developing, but is this the version that will incorporate GPL type physics or just another "cash cow" product. And yes, I think N3 was a vast improvement and race it everyday. Thanks... Lee Mills On Mon, 27 Mar 2000 23:34:25 GMT, "Jeff Jones"

Yes, it will be the second Papyrus product using the new game engine... -- -- Fran?ois Mnard <ymenard> -- May the Downforce be with you... -- http://www.WeRace.net -- People think it must be fun to be a super genius, but they don't realise how hard it is to put up with all the idiots in the world.
Nascar 4 was supposed to be Nascar 3. I believe it will be using advanced physics, but then again ya never know. Nascar 3 as you know is just an enhanced version of Nascar 2, and I believe the only reason they released the rehashed Nascar 2 with some improvements was because their superiors were pressuring them to release something, thus we get Nascar 3. Nascar 4 is planned to be released this year from what I hear and according to Papyrus, much will be revealed about Nascar 4 at the E3 Expo on May 11-13, and their confident no one will be disappointed. This is what I hear, so take it for what its worth :) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Skotty Flynn skotty20 on Won Nascar-Racing-Sims.Com: http://www.nascar-racing-sims.com The Ultimate Sim Racing Directory: http://www.nascar-racing-sims.com/directory/

The second product? If you mean the GPL engine you are wrong! Having seen N4 it is a very stripped down GPL with lots of code from the past, still lots of familiar bugs! Things change slowly at Papyrus lets not run the udder dry too soon! Pete

Because some of the beta testers share the game with their buddies illegally and they spread it to other friends etc. I could have got it but declined, I did look at it briefly on someone elses system. There are some features being brought over from GPL(physics wise) but its no GPL. Very stripped down version of GPL. Frame rate was a big problem with the early betas but it is now more managable. I would call it N3 1/2 or probably what N3 should have been. It still isn't a quantum leap forward like GPL was. Graphics were not much better either in the build I saw but I didn't spend anytime with it to speak of. Matson should be releasing info shortly at E3 show. And how long ago was this? And how long is it til it is to be released (scheduled) If the game is was that far in its Alpha stages when you saw it, it can and will change alot by the time it is released. Not saying this is a good or bad thing, just saying that you can not judge a game by seeing it 6 months before it is finished. Same thing goes with GP3, you get a certain group that already says they will not buy it and you have another group that with every new game that comes out "it is good, but it is no GP3". How does anyone know? it is not finished yet Pete <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:MorE4.28240$[email hidden]... > Because some of the beta testers share the game with their buddies > illegally > and they spread it to other friends etc. I could have got it but declined,I > did > look at it briefly on someone elses system. It's not like we haven't seen N4. We all saw the movie that was released over a year ago, and a few of us even saw a live demonstration at Daytona (last year). How did "what you saw" differ from the movie that was to be for N3? Because from what I could tell, that was a far cry from the current N3. And the physics did not look stripped down from GPL. They looked damn good - very close to reality IMO. There didn't seem to be a problem with frame rate either, and back then the best processor was what, a P2-450? The graphics also looked incredible, with dynamic lighting, etc. Looked like a "quantum" leap to me. I seriously doubt if Papy have gone backwards in the last year... --David Cook Pete <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:MorE4.28240$[email hidden]... > There are some features being > brought over from GPL(physics wise) but its no GPL. I have seen two beta builds the first was very slow FPS wise and the second was much better. I would say the game is well along towards its completion and would suspect its not that far off. I would doubt that it will be six months. More like 2 or 3. I also suspect with Charlie Heath leaving that his involvement was completed. The last version I saw was a month ago and it was a recent build. Pete "Cliff Roman" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:HUsE4.56$%[email hidden]... > And how long ago was this? I would count on it! The first build I saw was slower than molasses with very few of the tracks done. The second build was much smoother with most if not all of the tracks done! You may remember me posting about N3 on Jacobs NG well before it was released. I was trashed for my remarks there because I said other than graphics and sound there was no huge change. All the same bugs from previous version were still there. I also stated a year ago that you would see a Daytona and Indy Track, I guess I just made a lucky forcast. I'm not saying N4 is going to be terrible, I will be buying it. But if you think you will be seeing a Nascar GPL-reincarnate you are sadly mistaken. New features, extra settings but still lacking. IMHO I have not sat and played the game, or do I have it on my system. I have been contacted by the powers that be but its their job to police their beta people not mine. Its funny that some of the people that worked for Papy early on are now working for competitors to deliver a competing product. Only time will tell if they deliver a "Quantum Leap" but then again I may be more decerning consumer than you are! Pete "David L. If what you see is so much different than that then what we saw then I would be very dissappointed indeed. --David Cook

David, the way Papy does those movies at times(from personal knowledge) leaves a bit to be desired. You have to remember that artists can alter things to look very much different from the finished products. The screen shots you will see released from time to time are nothing more than artists renderings and aren't actually captured from the game. The early beta I saw that was close to the GPL version in terms of physics and this was from before N3 was released looked good but framed very badly on a high powered system at that time. It was almost unplayable and reminded me of GP2 when it first came out in terms of system requirements. This was when I started bitching it was time for a overhaul of their game engine, which everyone roundly trashed me. There are still physics bugs in the game going back to the original Indy Car and they have never been addressed. Believe me I tried to get these things changed. I and others probably bitched too much and thats why I don't beta test for them anymore. They don't take critiquing very well. And its not always the fault of the people whose names at Papy that we recognize, bean counting bozos is the name that comes to mind. I remember seeing screen shots of GPL being released and laughing, as they were facsimiles of artists rendering I saw when I was in Boston at Papyrus. I could tell some interesting stories of things I heard and saw but I won't to protect the few people that are left from those days. The days, I was there they had their first working copy of the N2 beta and I wasn't even interested. We spent all our time looking at the artists work on the then unannounced GPL! It took our breath away! N2 beta who cares! :-) I don't know whether that incident played any role in them getting rid of their open office concept because they didn't let too many outsiders go through at that time. The next person I knew that took the tour got to see only very limited scripted pieces of info as the office look had changed completely. I could go on but I won't bore you. I will ask to see the game again and take a little more interest this time. I will give you details but I won't post them. If you think I'm anti Papy your are wrong! I would love nothing better than to see a state of the art N4 released but after seeing first hand what goes on behind scenes and how they have treated their best employees and how few of them still work there. It saddens me! I sit and think how far ahead of their time Papyrus was all those years ago and how now the big shots drive their Ferrari's around the race track and tell the employees budget restrictions don't allow them to spend the time correcting bugs. Ironic! I guess I should be happy that they continue to release anything at all but like some sports teams they only play hard enough to win not blow away the competition. Pete "David L. Now you're being too technical for me Dave, I have a feeling you are not talking about your Dodge super tourer :-) and that it has something to do with fishing, but apart from that...I'm blank Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy "Team Mirage" http://www.teammirage.com/ "The Pits" http://www.theuspits.com/ * Spam is for losers who can't get business any other way * "Spamkiller" http://www.spamkiller.com

The Dodge is safely in the garage at this moment, Our Super Touring effort is getting ready for this summer, Looks to be another Team Monty Python Effort, which has yet to finish a race.(of course we only bolloxed the Bullrun 1000) barbless hook, because I thought you were trolling and yes had indeed hooked another one. :) dave henrie Goy Larsen wrote:

Ouch, I was so opposed to the (often seriously claimed) 90% of multiplayers, that I missed the joke. Even though I read at least 5 "April 1st" postings before this one!!! ;^) <Still choking on the hook and sinker> l8er ronny -- "You're one of those condescending Unix computer users!" What, me trolling ? :-) What *is* a barbless hook anyway ? Did a bit of fishing in my "younger" days, not that I got much fish, but to walk along a nice river and throw your line into the water every now and then to see if you can catch anything........relief for a stressed out mind I tell you, and if you then catch something as well, then the day is just about perfect...wish I had more time to do that these days, or maybe I should just *take* the time....
