NASCAR Racing 3 Craftsman Truck add-on release and Daytona dispute

Sierra support said the N3 Craftsman Truck expansion was due in late April or early May 2000. Many posters said they would not pay for tracks recycled from NASCAR Racing 1999 Edition. A related argument concerned reports that the coming patch would block hosting races on the leaked Daytona track and other add-on tracks on WON.net, with some blaming Papyrus and others blaming the licensing deal. Posters clarified that private IP-address races would still work.

"NASCAR Racing 3 Craftsman Series is due to be released late April early May." That's what Sierra customer support says... XLjunkie
Is everybody really going to go out and spend $50 for eight new tracks and a patch that will supposedly cut out any use of the leaked Daytona track? Good God man, let's not REWARD Papy further for releasing NASCAR2.3 by buying NASCAR2.35..... Erik's views are not necessarily the views of The Pits, his parents or any of his friends. -- Erik Frechette The Pits Grand Prix Legends www.theuspits.com/owheel/gpl/gpl.html The Pits Rally Championship www.theuspits.com/fbody/rallychamp/rallychamp.html
That's the rumor floating around the web at the moment. Supposedly the next and final release of the N3 patch will have the same function built in. -- Erik Frechette The Pits Grand Prix Legends www.theuspits.com/owheel/gpl/gpl.html The Pits Rally Championship www.theuspits.com/fbody/rallychamp/rallychamp.html > On Sat, 11 Mar 2000 14:14:12 GMT, "Erik Frechette" > >and a > >patch that will supposedly cut out any use of the leaked Daytona track? > Where did u hear this? > ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > Skotty Flynn > skotty20 on Won > Nascar-Racing-Sims.Com: > http://www.nascar-racing-sims.com > The Ultimate Sim Racing Directory: > http://www.nascar-racing-sims.com/directory/

I guarantee I won't be buying it. Sierra has got the last dollar they are getting from me for the N2 engine. Enough is enough. > Is everybody really going to go out and spend $50 for eight new tracks and a

They aren't even new. The 6 tracks were part of Nascar Racing : 1999 Edition except for Portland Speedway, which I speculate is an enhancement from the Icr2 version. For the 2 next track, we already have them since it's night versions of already-existing N3 tracks. Wow. They didn't even cared to add other tracks. We were expecting at least 10 tracks minimum. North Wilkesboro. Pocono. Hickory. Flemington. Anything over 19$ is paying too high for this. I'll suggest to people to buy other racing games instead for that price, which they will find a higher satisfaction rate for the price they pay. Like DTR, or Grand Prix Legends. Let's hope they do not start to encrypt their data in future sims. It will be the start of the end, I'll say. Third party utility users have been one of the principal reason for Papyrus's success. Open-architecture is the future, not closed-mind attitudes like Ubisoft per example. But with Sierra, anything is possible. Look at what they did with the EULA.txt and how pathetic the online community using N3 is presently. Never be shy to tell your true feelings! -- -- Fran?ois Mnard <ymenard> -- May the Downforce be with you... -- http://www.WeRace.net -- People think it must be fun to be a super genius, but they don't realise how hard it is to put up with all the idiots in the world.

The day it is released btw, I do not think it will be $50, probably $30 You also act like someone else made the Daytona track and Papy just wants to kill the use of it. Papy made it themselves > Is everybody really going to go out and spend $50 for eight new tracks and a

Sure they did, but that's beside the point. The point is, Papy is clamping down and in the process is effectively going to give themselves a razorblade ***. You don't shite on your fans in the name of self-righteousness, unless of course you're a pro-wrestler but I'm going afield here. I say, let's hope future sims are as easily edited as Rally Championship, which basically has everything out and exposed in terms of graphics and physics. I'm PRAYING World Sports Car will be as wonderfully detailed and realistic as it looks to be, while still leaving some ground for the *** enthusiast to tread upon. If all else fails, we'll force Dave Noonan to keep creating tracks for GPL until there are no tracks left to build! ::) -- Erik Frechette The Pits Grand Prix Legends www.theuspits.com/owheel/gpl/gpl.html The Pits Rally Championship www.theuspits.com/fbody/rallychamp/rallychamp.html > The day it is released > btw, I do not think it will be $50, probably $30 > You also act like someone else made the Daytona track and Papy > just wants to kill the use of it. The point that I see is that Papy made the track and now pretty much everyone has it. Instead of being grateful that Papy even made the track and effectively let it get distributed (you can not tell me that Papy did not know it would happen when they put out the demo at Daytona) people instead are mad at Papy for not allowing it to be run openly on Won.net. Your comments are a perfect example, you see the whole Daytona thing as Papy shitting on the fans, while I see it as the fact that we now have the ability to play Daytona which we did not have before. This is not even considering the fact that NONE of us paid for it. (even if you bought the program that had the demo, you paid for the demo, not the ability to race Daytona on the full N3 game) We have two different opinions, and that is all they are.. opinions. Lets leave it at that > Sure they did, but that's beside the point. The point is, Papy is clamping > down and in the process is effectively going to give themselves a razorblade

They try to circumvent this limit by leaving out features in thier games/sims and then selling them as expansion packs. Which, imo, should sit on the shelves like stones. Jim

Ohhh no we can't just leave it at that! ;) A few points i'd like to make on the subject. 1- Yes Papy made the track and I am grateful. 2- The track on the net is not the demo track, it is a pre-release version of the demo track. 3- Papy isn't shittin on us, DIS is with their licensing deal. 4- A patch that excludes Daytona (doubtful) would be Papy shitting on us to appease DIS. 5- Open ended game architecture IS the future, by shutting down the "upgrades", Papy would be killing the longevity of the software. 6- The hell with won.net, get icq and play tcpip all you want. 7- The damn Truck pack should be free. (but being the dumbass I am, i'll pay the price for it) 8- Lets leave it at THAT lol "Cliff Roman" <[email hidden]> wrote:

Speaking of WON.net and they/Papy coalition not allowing Daytona to be openly played/displayed on the game servers with the patch...... But did you know that this goes for *ANY* track as well? Not throwing any stones, just passing on some additional information, hehe. Anyways, I've tried Heartland Park, Laguna Seca, Pocono and others, that came from ICR2, N2 or N99. None of those tracks will appear in the race list if you run them. Apparently there's some kind of "kill filter" being used by either Won or Papy, so that if you use *ANY* track that did not come with N3, then nobody will be able to see it, or know it's there, unless you spread it by word of mouth, such as by setting up the IP game method, hehe. Basically, I think that sucks, but then I guess Papy/Won have their reasons. I just thought it was be mighty nice to run the old tracks from the old sims, with N3. But then, I guess they think that would kill their sales of the Truck patch, if they would allow people to bring over Flemington, Heartland Park, I-70, etc, over to N3 and use online. Sounding like it boils down to the mighty dollar ruling the world. I'm not against them selling their products and making money, but hey, what we already bought, we should still be able to use, even if it happens to work with a newer version of a game. As it stands, we have to wait for the Truck add-on, the Goody's Dash add-on, the ARCA add-on, the TPTCC (if the Pits sells them the rights, hehe;) add-on, the weekend warrior local short track saturday night add-on, and on and on. There's so many add-ons that Papy is having to make to keep us all happy, that it will be N8 by the time they get it all done probably, hehe. That's not saying that they will ever make any of those add-ons, but hey, we can dream. But if they don't, they should at least give us a little creative freedom to create our own add-ons. I guess if quake2 players are allowed to do it, with the blessings of ID Software Inc even, then maybe Papy will let us do it. ;o) Destin P.S. If Papy really wanted to make some big $$$, all they gotta do is put out a "Tracks Add-On" for N3, and even N2/N99 users, that features dozens, hopefully 100 or more, of various real life tracks from around the country, and even the world. Tracks like Lanier here in Georgia, used by Hooters and Dash, Laguna Seca for N2/N99/N3, maybe even a couple F1 tracks for the road course lovers like me, lol. But anyways, if they just released a tracks add-on, that all the cdrom had was only tracks, I'd be happy to spend as much as $25 or so for an add-on like that, rather than having to surf the web and try to figure out which of the 5 different home-brewed (track name here) looked the best and was most realistic looking, and realistic driving. If you read that Papy, take my idea and run with it!! Run hard and fast, get it done, i'll buy it!! :o) Cliff Roman <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:%3By4.746$[email hidden]...

You can't just pick tracks and create an add-on track. It's a business, remember. Carefully creating the tracks takes a very long time of production. And since Papyrus has probably a limited amouth of artist that can work on this (and work at the same time for other products), you can't do that. Especially since you need to license those tracks, which cost money and takes alot of time. Am I correct in concluding that the rumor about the patch only involves the online aspect of not being able to openly play/display daytona and other add-on tracks? We will still be able to race these tracks online as people are doing right now wont we? Their not also trying to kill us from using daytona and other tracks offline as well are they? I sure as hell hope not. On Sun, 12 Mar 2000 03:34:37 -0500, <[email hidden]> wrote:

We regularly run the ICR2 road courses with N3 online with the beta patch. You can't "see" the tracks but they are there. Leagues can still host using the ip address feature in N3. The difficulty in this tho...is: it has become very hard to attract new right-turn drivers since they never see the races being offered. The first few patches I met many roadcourse devotees, but now I haven't made contact with any since the limits were put in place. check out what is possible with N3 now at.... http://members.home.net/alstiff/Nars.htm (don't forget to check out the results link at the bottom of the page for a sneak peak of the Big Sky/Fallyn Racing Dodge Intrepid. and hopefully soon in the near future at... http://tptcc.com/ dave henrie [email hidden] wrote:

Its called a license, and if you do not have it, you can not offer it. Sure.. let Papy use your thoughts and put out a patch that has Daytona so they can get sued. <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:8agbsr$38g$[email hidden]... > 4- A patch that excludes Daytona (doubtful) would be Papy shitting on > us to appease DIS.
"Skotty Flynn" <[email hidden]> > Their not also trying to kill us from using daytona and other tracks > offline as well are they? I sure as hell hope not. Unfortunately, since one of the beta build they are actually doing this. It's poor eh? The sport of Stockcar online racing has went down the hill since Nascar Racing 3 is released. But of course they got our money, so why care? -- -- Franois Mnard <ymenard> -- May the Downforce be with you... -- http://www.WeRace.net -- People think it must be fun to be a super genius, but they don't realise how hard it is to put up with all the idiots in the world.

When the users are fighting against the product they have bought simply to be able to make other users enjoy the same product, it has gone way downhill :( -- -- Franois Mnard <ymenard> -- May the Downforce be with you... -- http://www.WeRace.net -- People think it must be fun to be a super genius, but they don't realise how hard it is to put up with all the idiots in the world.
Funny that Micro Prose or any of the hacked tracks in GP2 were never Lic or no one got sued? Looks like a bunch of greedy bastards to me. Thats the way the world is and if I had a nuke bomb I set her off! "ymenard" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:%WIy4.36306$[email hidden]... > <[email hidden]> wrote > > > P.S. they never tried to license Daytona for gp3 did they?? dave henrie Stiff wrote: > > Funny that Micro Prose or any of the hacked tracks in GP2 were never Lic or > no one got sued?
"Stiff" <[email hidden]> wrote > Funny that Micro Prose or any of the hacked tracks in GP2 were never Licor > no one got sued? Microprose chosen to not take any action with the track editing third party utilities because that's their philosophy. They weren't add-on tracks. In fact if you check out the user-created tracks for the Papyrus series, you'll see that Sierra doesn't legally do anything against that. They do of course if you give for free copyrighted code by Papyrus (such as full .dat file). Take GPL per example and Brands Hatch and the O-Ring. Or converted track for about any old game engine software. Unfortunately, since for Nascar Racing 3 we run online on a WON.NET system (which Sierra is the owner), they have to legally do action against illegal tracks just to keep their arse safe, even if that means pissing off their customers. That's how pathetic the legalities are today in the gaming business. There is also the role of the track owners to protect their track name and likeness, but that's another complicated thing. The Daytona track for a Nascar sim has a much bigger appeal than any F1 user-created track for GP2. -- -- Franois Mnard <ymenard> -- May the Downforce be with you... -- http://www.WeRace.net -- People think it must be fun to be a super genius, but they don't realise how hard it is to put up with all the idiots in the world.

Ahhh let me clarify what I posted, in case you missed the original post. The original post asked if the patch would render Daytona unusable, not that it would or would not include it. If Papy chooses to include code in the patch that does not allow me to play my Daytona track, then that is Papy shitting on us to appease DIS. I did not mean to infer that they should or would include Daytona. OK, I think I muddied that up a little. -JH- In article <llQy4.758$[email hidden]>, "Cliff Roman" <[email hidden]> wrote: > Its called a license, and if you do not have it, you can not offer > it. Gotcha, and yes I misunderstood what you were saying. As far as I know, the patch does stop you from posting a public Daytona race on Won.net, but I can fully understand that. However I do not think the patch in any way prohibits you from racing the track locally on your own machine or via IP Address with someone else

LOL usenet, home of misunderstanding and creative editing (snip). -JH- Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.
>I agree, there is no way I am giving up Daytona. Two things: 1) IF the trucks are less than $20, I'll get it on the first day. (Nascar 2 didn't even have Busch Series, but now people *** since NR99 had trucks!) 2) Even if they DO disable the ability to run Daytona, I'll just install another setup of N3 without the trucks and continue to run it. It's too much fun to do without, but then - so are the trucks!! BTW, being in Portland we're too close to any "real" tracks, so now the ability to have PIR and Portland Speedway (the 1/2 mile oval) in the game is AWESOME!! Gunner
