my list of racing sims..what others should I have?

Which racing sims should be in every collection

Rich listed his mostly arcade and older Papyrus titles and asked what to add. The consensus was Grand Prix Legends, F1 Challenge 99-02 and NR2003, with Live for Speed, netKar, NASCAR Heat and Ratbag's dirt racing games also suggested. A dispute over whether Live for Speed is arcade-like gave way to discussion of motorcycle games and real motorcycle safety.

I'm looking for suggestions on decent racing sims for my P4 2.6. I'm on dialup here so downloading demos (and they're huge now) is out. Strictly on word of mouth, what's a decent sim that everyone should have in their collection? Presently I have: N2002, N4, N3, NL, N2, N1 NFSHP2, NFSPU, NFSHS, NFSHP, NFSse EA's Nascar 2000, F1-2001, Sports Car GT Pitbulls TestDrive 6, 4, Dirt track Racing 2 EVO's 4x4 NHRA Drag Racing 2 Network Q Rally Championship Screamer 2 Thanks for any suggestions!!

Are my eyes deceiving me or is GPL really not in there? ;-) F1C is worth a look, and F12002 just for the mods. Netkar and LFS are not bad either. Ken Rich wrote:

NR2003 and F1 Challenge. Both are "just" updates to games you already have, but they are pretty big updates with better physics and better graphics than the versions you have. Also you might want to get some of the Project Wildfire mods for NR2003, I know you said you are on dailup but they aren't really huge downloads. Besides, if you get a download manager that can hang up the connection for you when done, then you can just set them up when you go to bed and let them run overnight. You don't have any of the current offerings, and of course you don't have the one that all others are still compared to: GPL EA's F1C '99-'02 NR 2003 Season For simulations, these are the best available. If you want arcade style, console like games, stick with the titles on your list after the papy titles you have listed. Nascar Heat (2000) and the million or so mods n tracks should keep you happy a while longer. Physics are good also, and controller support is excellent. Live For Speed is worth your time downloading- work through the demo til you get the XR Turbo and see if you like it. Worth the small price, in my opinion to register it. Oh, and NR2003 is the best of the series, and should be cheap as chips by now. cheers John

Mercedes-Benz Truck Racing is a pretty interesting change of pace if you can get it to run on your system. F1C and NASCAR 2003 are great programs as well. As a side note - how do you like NHRA2? I had some drag racing game(Burnout, I think) that sucked, IMO. I could never get the damn thing to work right... Leadfoot Powerslide- arcade game but the physics are good, graphics are good for an old game. MotoGP 2- I used to think Superbike 2001 was better, but this won me over eventually. Gamepad is best Colin McRae Rally 2 (if you like Rally racing at all- very challenging. It took me a while to beat it on easy) Rallisport (just for the graphics), Rally Masters is also OK (but doesn't run well on newer ATI cards) Rally Trophy (very hard, harder than CMR 2, but interesting cars, nice graphics) Nascar Thunder 2004 looks like it might be shaping up to be good Sportscar GT NASCAR HEAT- the Spirit of HEAT mod is cool, and the actual game is highly playable

I would add Mercedes-Benz Truck Racing (for something completely different :) ) Mercedes-Benz World Racing (Like NFS:PU with Mercedes) Mobil 1 BRC (a little old but still great, although the physics are iffy but can be altered in the config file) F1 2002 F1 Challenge '99-'02 GPL (if you can get it to run on a new system; I've have problems getting my wheel to work) - F50 GT Rich wrote:

I know a lot of people like it, but I cant stand LFS. It feels like I'm playing a slightly improved NFS, way too arcadey for me. Or maybe its just not my cup of tee. And online is full of %^&)*&, well you know the type.. ;)

You know, I like LFS right up to the point where they started selling it. And it's not that I minded paying for it. I did. It's the incredible nuisance they created with the 'product activation' bullshit they incorporated, it just took all the steam out of the experience for me. One more useless thing to have to deal with and worry about that, for me, ruined what started off as an awesome project. This project had a unique, friendly character to it up to that point. They blew it. It's a damned shame. -Larry "Biz" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:RPekb.183580$[email hidden]...

I was one of them. I have been using TurboTax since it was available, ditto for quicken. Last year, I used TaxCut instead and intend to do so this year. When I picked up TaxCut at CompUSA last January the TurboTax end-caps and shelves were full, and I had to dig WAY in the back to find the copy of TaxCut I wanted. The shelf was all but bare. I hear that Quicken 2004 is Product Activated, and thus I have zero intention of upgrading from 2002. -Larry "Mitch_A" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:UdBkb.2243$[email hidden]...

I urge you to try SBK 2K1 again. It's a lot of fun, despite the lack of good bike-style controllers. The Thrustmaster Freestyler Bike controller gets good reviews, but I don't think any controller or current bike sim can correctly emulate the countersteering inherent to motorcycle riding. Do you ride? I currently have a Kawi 500R. Sean

The MSF class is a very good class. I took it in June. I signed up for it about a year ago! :) Sometimes you can get into a class by waiting at the classroom, they'll take you in if another student doesn't show up. But yes, cost can be prohibitive. Maybe your co-worker was referring to the Rider's Edge Course by Harley Davidson...that one tends to be a little more expensive. Sean

In my early twenties all I owned was a bike. For three years I commuted to SJ, I rode through rain sleet (no snow in cali where I live). My best friend also owned a bike and we had loads of fun riding together. Right up till I saw him laying dead in a casket. The fun went away in a split second for both of us. A drunk driver clobbered him and his girlfriend (she did live) on his bike as they headed over the hill to Santa Cruz one friday night in the summer of 85'. I sold my bike shortly after and havent ridden since. Huge wake up call for me. At the time my son was less than a yr old and I couldnt take such a huge risk any longer. Certain things in people's lives are life-changing, this was one of those times for me. I woke up that morning a fearless happy boy and went to sleep that evening a scared and lonely man. Way too many clueless drivers everywhere (cali especially bad) and this was a long time ago with far fewer cars on the roads. Is it worth it to you or your loved ones that must carry the burden of your choices? I hate hearing about motorcycle accidents. My brother started riding last year. He works third shift near the airport in Atlanta, and goes to Ga Tech, so he pretty much mingles with some of the worst traffic in the southeast. Saw accident photos of a guy who was killed on a motorcycle. The one that stands out the most was a picture of a tennis shoe with an orange circle spray painted around it. Foot was still in it, torn off a little above the ankle. Not pretty. This was in the late '80s, and I wouldn't have rode one then. No chance in hell I would now, not with the all the SUV's and cellphones on the road. Thanks for the link! I'll have to search for it elsewhere, however. I will not create an account with this site. I find it far too annoying to consider. I will trail-ride (I love it, but haven't been in years), but I will never ride a bike on the street. I lost too many sailors to Motorcycle accidents when I was in the Navy. Part of it is the fault of the dealers. Yeah, yeah, I know everyone makes their own choices, but when you offer an 18 year old E-3 Sailor the opportunity to buy a Crotch-Rocket with no money down, and a paycheck allotment of $75 a month, well, you're adding fuel to the fire. -Larry "Mitch_A" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:Idzlb.2736$[email hidden]... > In my early twenties all I owned was a bike. You darn Sailors. Us grunts have to teach you everything... You don't ride a motorcycle in the water you ride it on the dirt :) Yea a dealer in Fayetteville (Ft. Bragg NC) nearly had me on a Nighthawk 750 but I was going to Italy soon so I decided against it. The cadre preached HARD against any of us getting bikes for that very reason. I won't lie to you - last year I had to re-think my interest in motorcycles. A bowling teammate was killed on his bike at the end of the season in May, 2002. We saw him on the last night of bowling. When I went to the payoff the following week, I found out that he'd been killed sometime that week. 26 years old - gone. Sobering experience. There are clueless drivers all over the place. They can get you in a car as well. All I can do is have confidence in my *own* abilities, and practice situational awareness for those who may not be in total control. If I was going to let the possibility that a drunk driver may total me and my car worry me, I wouldn't go out on the roads at ALL. If you stop living(doing things you enjoy) because of what *might* happen, why bother to live at all...? We're all going do die someday anyway - we might as well enjoy the journey. I'm not belittling your decision (although I realize it might seem that way). I guess I just haven't had that life-changing event yet.<shrug> Eldred -- Homepage - http://www.umich.edu/~epickett Member Screamers Racing League IICC League GPLRank -2.4 MoGPL rank +302.38 ChallengeRank +54.48 MoC +743.77 Hist. +82.82 MoH in progress N2k3 rank:in progress Remove SPAM-OFF to reply.

Sry to hear bout your buddy. Its not that Im "hiding" in a corner waiting for the inevitable, its more like does the reward outweigh the risk? With (at the time) 1 kid the risk was no longer worth it. Part of being a man is realizing the decisions you make will impact those who surround your life and I sure dont want my children raised without me.
