Reactions to West Racing's transporter update

Nick and Eldred criticised West Racing's choice to spend a month modelling a transporter, while Dave Henrie, Mitch_A and Carl Ribbegaardh argued the Wests owed the community nothing and should be left to work their own way. Some suggested modelling paddock detail suited a premium-priced product. The thread drifted into a discussion of religion and belief.

Hi, Just checked out www.west-racing.com to read the new update, and I can't believe just how many times they can flip from amazing to moronic. They come along and announce the racing sim to end all racing sims - yay! They disappear for half a year - d'oh! They come back with a fantastic update showing the work they've done in the engine design, which I've seen before but not in a game - yay! They spend a month making a perfectly realistic model of a f***ing bus - d'oh! At the end of the day, who cares what the paddock looks like, whether they have a nice screen font or if you can replace the fan belt on your crappy team bus when it breaks down. We want legendary racing cars on legendary race tracks. Give us the 49 at Brands in a rolling demo and we'll love you, code physically perfect yellow flags fluttering in the breeze and we'll give up waiting. Oh wait, I know what they'll be modelling next, the MP4/18...

I'm starting to think that it's all just a Psych 101 experiment. Someone is just trying to see the reactions of the hardcore racing sim fans. With the pricing they're aiming for, I don't find it absurd at all to diligently pay minute attention to the trackside and paddock stuff. AAMOF I'd expect to see waiters serving beer with fish and chips at lunchbreak on training days ;-) Seriously though, it would do their project and its reputation in the sim community infinitely more good if they'd publish some sort of working, driveable demo. On the optimistic side I'd say if their working on the bus then much of whats important must already be done? I came away feeling more positive than Ive been in the past. They clearly say up till now its all just words and pics. Fingers and toes crossed hoping it'll come to pass. "Nick" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

And nobody could possibly be stupid enough to think the Wests have the midas touch when it comes to race sim design, and honestly believe that they can do no wrong, when we've yet to see an interactive product from them. Come to think of it, am I just incredibly stupid and the Wests are actually just making a Racing Legends movie? All we have are RL renders and WSC video clips...

What makes you say this Frank? Based on what company do you assume we "would have seen racing cars on the track"? Wouldnt that depend on the sales model? As LFS is then yes but are the West's using the same sales strategy? Theyre pretty small so keeping a tight hold on their code would be much easier than through a publisher that requires progress demos which in turn become leaks. If I was in their shoes I would keep it all as close to my chest as I could. When the time is right then let it EXPLODE onto the scene creating tons of interest and in turn sales??? Actually Im just trying out some positive thinking this time around instead of my normal pessimistic 'tude :) Mitch
"Joachim Trensz" wrote: > With the pricing they're aiming for, I don't find it absurd at all to > diligently pay minute attention to the trackside and paddock stuff. True, but I would expect the pricing model to be modular. Purchase car and track packs, each of which add new features such as garages, working engines and transporters as the development evolves. To start with I would expect basic cars and tracks. I also though they were looking to help fund the venture with a paid up beta program. Again this would suggest getting something driveable out of the door as soon as viable. Cheers Tony

Ok, maybe I should have said "what PEOPLE want". Meaning that nobody in their right mind would think that's what most people wanted. Is what most people want unimportant as well? I still find it hard to believe that anyone would drool over a fully-modelled race transporter, when we don't even have the cars yet. Come on, a *transporter*?!? Well call me a drooling idiot. We have to remember that "WE" the members of RAS have absolutely NO right to demand anything from the Wests. The WESTS are making RL not RAS. We can shout to the heavens about what we want and what we think is important, and maybe the Wests will listen, but in the end, this is their project. RL may, or may-not, be born, but I willnot spend X amount of time between now and then complaining about stuff that I have no creative input on. A-lot of fellows here are getting worked up about RL as if they themselves are funding the project, as if we the denizens of RAS are sponsors. We are nothing. We cannot dictate. We cannot demand. And we also seem to be short sighted....a fully working transporter...just imagine what a sim could do with that...driving the big rig into the track, I wonder if the ACT LABs shifter would need an 18 gear template. Then unloading your car and pushing it over to the garages. Then driving from the garages to the pits and thence to the track. Why racing sims have never attempted to match the Hanger to runway immersion many flight sims have is beyond me. I'm not appolgizing for the Wests...they have created much of their own PR problems, but I am also not criticizing something just because their timeline doesn't meet with my approval. Let'em work, let'em make tiny updates sporadically on their website, I don't care. Call me if RL is ever released and then you can ask me what I think of it. dave henrie

You're right and make sense. Personally i don't give a shit about the transporter, all I want to do is "drive" the damn cars, but if their priority list may seem fucked up to me it might make sense to them, before the racing you need to get to the track... So the next step might be to simulate the bad food and the driver needing to take a shit in the middle of the race, or pissing in his suit for the long races and then you COULD have electrical problems based on the fluid dynamics, track layout (turning right or left) and whether your piss is more yellow than white and has a fluidity factor of more than 0.21454 Basically do the same for me than for Dave, wake me up when we have something to test, and let them simulate what they want, after all it's their life...
I honestly don't see the point in bashing the Wests methods. It's their project, period. If it is released, I'll be happy to buy it. But until that moment, I'm happy for whatever progress they do. /Carl

What's the percentage of people who actually follow pre-flight checklists, as opposed to just jumping in the plane and flying? It might actually make more sense for the 'immersion' factor, because a real pilot(except the Blue Angels) would do their own pre-flights. But a real race driver wouldn't drive the truck and unload the car. Most of them don't even WORK on the car...<g> > I'm not appolgizing for the Wests...they have created much of their own >PR problems, but I am also not criticizing something just because their >timeline doesn't meet with my approval. What most sim enthusiasts want to do is the part that counts, be that racing, flying, skiing, shooting, etc, and the sooner the simmer can get to the point where that is exactly what he is doing the better. As a RL agnostic, one would say, "I'll believe it when I see it, or when I at least see enough evidence to convince me; but not before then", whereas a true RL atheist would say "Nope. What are you consuming? Until they actual have a product to sell, you can't be a consumer. But I will agree, they could get plenty of good advice from groups like RAS. In they end though, we have no say whether they will listen to such input. dh

But I have to say the above statement, as regards RL, is contradicted by your very presence in RAS. It's inconceivable that anyone with the basic interest that leads them here would not care. One might well think C&T are nuts and RL will never see the light of day. But if you care about sims, you cannot be completely indifferent to such a project. And if one doesn't care about sims, why are they here? As for larger issues, not caring about such basic questions is a sad state of affairs, usually borne of weariness at not finding a suitable answer. Well, people have been seeking such since they became self aware, so the fact that we can't answer them shouldn't surprise us. In fact, the unanswerable nature of the question is one of the basic tenets of...agnosticism. Which brings me full circle, so this is where I get off. Here's wishing you some pleasant surprises... ;-)

No, that was basically not caring about religion. If RL does make it to the public, I'll definitely check out a demo, at least. Rumors of a high price tag may keep me from buying it right away, though. I love racing sims, but my relative lack of speed, and other things going on in my life mean that I need to change priorities. So I no longer wait with bated breath for the next new computer game, as I once did. If there were going to be a Starcraft 2, I might change my mind...<g> Eldred -- Homepage - http://www.umich.edu/~epickett Member Screamers Racing League IICC League GPLRank -2.4 MoGPL rank +302.38 ChallengeRank +54.48 MoC +743.77 Hist. +82.82 MoH in progress N2k3 rank:in progress Remove SPAM-OFF to reply.

Either way, I have to say I think I'd prefer a nice render of an Aussie V8 in the next website update (are you listening West brothers? ;-) ) David Corless --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Sorry, I haven't been following RAS and sim racing much lately. Did the West Bros sim ever get produced. I remember seeing great screen shots a while back. Then nothing. Claude Beaudouin Doug Ellison wrote:
