Which Formula One sim to buy for a force-feedback wheel

A new Guillemot wheel owner asked which F1 sim handles best with force feedback, and was told Grand Prix Legends. Others suggested Monaco Grand Prix Racing Simulation 2 or waiting for Grand Prix 3 for a modern sim. The thread turned into a debate about whether GPL needed a realism slider to sell to casual players.

Hey all! I am going to by the new Guillemot/Ferrari force feedback steering wheel this week. I have got RC2000 - but which Formula 1 racing sim has the best handling when using a FF-steering wheel??? Hope to hear from you guys! Best regards Lars S?e

The only possible answer to this question is : Grand Prix Legends, produced by SIERRA Sports and created by Papyrus. -- -- Fran?ois Mnard <ymenard> -- May the Downforce be with you... Yo! Now you've done it! You'll get ca 132+ answers stating that Grand Prix Legends (GPL) is the F1 game to buy. They'll state that no other game comes even close to GPL. They'll say that if you want *** realistic handling, this is the only game. Worst of all: They are right. GPL is truly fascinating! Jon

....If you don't use the force feddback, Luke, you might want to try GP2, VERY old, VERY good

OK - I hear you :-) Looking at the former posts in this group I can see what you mean.......... I am off to buy the game right away! Thanks for the advice!
Soon ther will be geoff hammonds gp3 until then, i have to agree that GPL is the best out there, but if you are searching for a modern f1 sim and i think that, that is what you mean then you have to be a litle bit more patient. Until then you maybe could try Monaco grand prix racing simulator 2 from ub soft if modern f1 is what you seek. It's not a superb sim, and some will say that gp2 is still better, but i dont know if i totaly agree on that. They both have their weacknesses and strong points. Gp2 was superb for the time but getting used to the extreme sensation of racing gpl i have to say that most sims nowadays fail. I set my money on gp3 and hopes it lives up to my expectation. But even more am i hoping for a sim of modern cart racing with the qualities of gpl. "> I am going to by the new Guillemot/Ferrari force feedback steering wheel GPL is the best Formula 1 sim (it's based on the '67 season). If you want current Formula 1, wait for GP3. (it's due out in March, I believe)

Or a Cart racing sim using the GPL engine, hint hint, Papy.
Look....Papy are not THICK... They've been stung by GPL - yes it's got people who will slit their own wrists if people so much as mention another game in the same sentace as GPL - but it's not a great commercial product. It needed a realism slider...because out of all the people who've sat down in front of my machine to play GPL...I've gone away for 30 minutes - when I get back, they're playing TOCA 2. It's nothing wrong with the people... It's just that GPL is too difficult for 90%+ of the Population With this in mind - do you really think they're going to do the same mistake again??? Come on - they're a company - not a charity. Someone out there must have the cash / brains etc to work out a way to crack open GPL totally - or to buy the GPL engine off Papy...then make a low volume - high price sim using modern CART tracks and cars.... Sure as hell Papy aint gonna do it... Doug > > expectation. But even more am i hoping for a sim of modern cart racing with > > the qualities of gpl. When I have some people visitiong my place who try GPL i have to pull them away from the computer. Not because i feel threatened by their bad laptimes but because they almost tear my precious MSFF-wheel apart due to poor clamping. But what I haven't found out is if their enthusiasm is as great after some hours. [snip] I would pay a-great-lot-of-money for a GPL based CART sim. I hope you're wrong :) -- Olav K. Well, I agree with you, but from another point of view: Making less realistic games gives them much more negative reactions! They've overdone GPL, but the only (big) negative aspect is it's realism ! :) So, now they got much respect! Bart

I agree GPL is too hard, but that doesn't mean that they can't make a good Cart sim using the GPL engine. With the AI tweaker, any one can win at GPL, so I ask, what makes you think that just because a sim uses the GPL engine, it has to be hard? They could make a CART sim with an adjustable AI (like they should have done with GPL).

I don't think he meant the AI as being difficult. He meant the physics model made driving the car difficult, which means the AI could be dumbed down to the lowest level and he would still lose because he can't drive the car well. Vintook

You had to say it didn't you..arrrrrghhhhh!!! RS2, A "proper" modern day F1 sim......... Not alot of ff to boast as modern day cars are a tad smoother than ther 1967 counterparts but when you hit the karbs, that lamp on the end of your desk goes flying!! > >- but which Formula 1 racing sim has the best > > handling when using a FF-steering wheel??? > The only possible answer to this question is : Grand Prix Legends, produced

yeah, I know, but it's not Need for Speed we are talking about, it should take you awhile to drive fast (even with dumbed down AI), you should loose until you can drive a race without wiping out. That is the nature of simulators. Look at Monaco (no I'm not directly comparing it to GPL), but it does have several AI settings, it does take awhile to get used to the physics model (the canned spins), and win a race. Not very many people can buy a sim (any sim), and win without some practice.
> Hey all! > I am going to by the new Guillemot/Ferrari force feedback steering wheel > this week. I have got RC2000 - but which Formula 1 racing sim has the best > handling when using a FF-steering wheel??? The best historic F1 sim, you can read about it in a dozen posts, is GPL. The best modern day F1 sim, IMHO, is RS2 (MGPR) by UbiSoft. (and don't listen to that chicken running headless through the ng. ;^) If you can stand a sim without 3D support (video or graphics) and no FF support, GP2 is a classic. l8er ronny -- The box said "Windows 95 or better", so I installed LINUX! |\ _,,,---,,_ I want to die like my Grandfather, ZZZzz /,`.-'`' -. ;-;;,_ in his sleep. |,4- ) )-,_. ,\ ( `'-' Not like the people in his car, '---''(_/--' `-'\_) screaming their heads off!

It's not beating the AI in GPL that is the issue - it's keeping the thing on the track. Something I learnt to do after a few hours - something I havn't seen anyone else be bothered. (10 mins in...F**K it, lets play TOCA2, RC2K etc..) There needs to be a "Bastard difficult handling" slider - that takes away the ultra realism - and replaces with some down to earth playability (in TOCA terms etc...not that I like TOCA< of coursE!!) Doug

Umm.. I can drive the car well in GPL - obviously I'm not world class - but when I'm feeling sado-masachistic - I'll fling the Ferrari round Spa in 3:19 . My point is that the average consumer can't be arsed to learn how to drive a sim, before racing in it. By the time they've learnt how to do it, it's in the bin. DOug

Ok GPL is the best of it's kind but let's all have some patience till GP3 is released (can't wait - it's getting unbearable!). I bought a second hand Amiga especially for GP1, I bought my first PC (p90) especially for GP2, and to keep up the tradition I'll sell my slow (to p200mmx upgraded) p90 and by me a state of the art PIII a short period before the game is released. ---TIM---
Tim Vanhee 16 Dec 1999#509109
I don't let anybody play GPL on my PC when they ain't got any excperience with it. It get's terribly on my nerfs that I see them slam the throttle when exiting the pits and crashing out into the barrier... It makes me wanna show them how it's done... ---Tim "sim" Vanhee---
There isn't a chance in hell that Papyrus or Sierra will sell the physics engine from GPL. And I'm quite sure that there are many gifted people out there trying to break it. But so far no one has done it. One thing is for sure. If man made it,then someone can break it. Joel Willstein

I understand all that - but I can't understand why they can't change a few parameters and make the engine easier to learn and then add these as a parameter. Then they could release the game - catch the majority who want a simple acarde style game and allow then and the existing sim community to improve the model as they get better. For instance, the grip of the tyres could be improved via a parameter (but controlled in a multiplayer game!) which would make it much easier for the newbie to learn.
