NASCAR 3 collision bugs and a debate about swearing

Morgan vented about cars merging into one another in NASCAR Racing 3 collisions and posted screenshots, while others debated whether it was a bug or his driving. A parent's complaint about veiled profanity started a long side debate about swearing in public forums.

Godallmighty! If I slide into one more goddammed AI car I'm gonna f*ckin uninstall the goddammed thing! I was just trying some practice laps at Bristol, I'm about to overtake #77, I acidentally tap him a little bit at the right-rear corner, and instead of just tapping and moving on I wind up sliding *into* that c*ck sucker's car! Of course, we were both done for and my practice session effectively over. I haven't been playing N3 much lately 'cause of a preoccupation with Viper and SCGT, but I still like to practice with it on occasion. Seems just about everytime I do, though, I wind tapping another car (not uncommon in stock car racing) and *sliding into* it and wrecking. I need to find out who at Papy to contact and send them some screenshots and replays of this nonsense. I remember that being a problem in N99 as well. -- -------------------------------- Morgan Vincent Wooten http://members.xoom.com/morganv/ --------------------------------

Well...I hate to tell ya but thats the way it should be. Those cars are so close to the ragged edge that a strong gust of wind could spin you right around. IMO its not a bug but an improvement in the physics model. Teaches you to keep your bumber out of where it doesnt belong huh? Now, granted this is sim racing and there are instances where oddities can occour...but general rule of thumb is...if it happens all the time; its generally not a bug. Watch a highlight reel of a NASCAR race and youll see how often a slight touch can end a run for both drivers. Chris
You wouldn't get away with crashing into other cars in GPL either. Seems like the AI should be re-programmed to stay away from you! Steve

Hmmm Morgan I am Lost hereif yo are racing the AI then you determine your amount of Practice right?I am assuming that when you wreck with the AI you cant repair that Damage is what you mean so you wont get a good feel for the car.Well unless you have Really SHORT practices all you have to do is go back to the setup screen and get a new car or hit shift+r and it rests you too the pits and you are back to practicing again.I dont see what the problem is, you hit a car, you both spin,, hmmm sounds about right to me. -- Paul Carillon Nascar3 ID: PCarillon ICQ# 1592675 Member of Team PDPI http://www.pdpi.net Team Site: http://www.racersonline.com/teampdpi/index.htm LA for Hawaii Thunder Series (HTS) Member of Leagues HTS,Midwest,Hal,ARSE,CERL HTS League page: http://www.carillon.net/hts

Do you have force feedback? If you did, you would feel the other car before you bashed into it (your term was tapping). I tap the other cars all the time without wrecking, so either I have yellows and damage off (which I do) or you suck :-) -- Header address intentionally scrambled to ward off the spamming hordes. cisko [AT] ix [DOT] netcom [DOT] com > I haven't been playing N3 much lately 'cause of a preoccupation with Viper and > SCGT, but I still like to practice with it on occasion. He's saying his car went *into* the other car (merged). When this happens, you can't get separated again, and the race is over.

Instead of sending the replays or screenshots to Papy, why don't you find one of the alt.binaries newsgroups and post them there? Then you could post a message in this group letting us know where they are. I would be very interested in looking these. Note: I suspect your driving incompetence. Not trying to be rude, but I love the new AI. I am not perfect, but careful and I find that I have no trouble until I get way too impatient and try to win a race in the first 5 laps.

Morgan, Calm down !! 1st it's only a practice session in a sim. Try doing that in a league race, unfortunately,I do it all the time. And by all means if it's driving you nuts, then uninstall it. You can always reinstall it when you change your mind, and sooner or later you will.
Doesn't Shift-R return you to the pits no matter what (in practice)? Gunner
Morga 24 Nov 1999#505299
I admit I'm only mediocre at this stuff. I don't practice all the time nor do I care all that much about my lap times or running perfectly consistent on every lap. I just like to run laps here and there and occasionally run a 50% or 100% race every now and then. But I think most of you here are misunderstanding what I'm saying. That's not a surprise either. Most of the people who complain about the AI get replies usually suggesting raising or lowering the opponent strength or RELS. What I'm saying is my car *slides into* the other car. I don't mean tapping, bumping, crashing, sliding toward the other car, or anything of that nature. I'm saying our two cars are *merging* into one. I actually wind up driving *into* the opponent's***pit. What then happens is both of our cars are locked together and neither of us get away. Eventually after enough revving and sawing at the steering wheel the two cars will unlock. This happens very frequently and is obviously a bug. I'll post some screenshots on my website when I get around to it. Today or tommorow. I might post some replays as well. I have a screenshot of something similar in Sports Car GT. Two cars clipping (in graphics sense, not the racing sense) each other. This don't never happen in Viper Racing though. When to cars hit they HIT, baby! *into* the opponent's***pit. What then happens is both of our cars are locked together and neither of us get away. Eventually after enough revving and sawing at the steering wheel the two cars will unlock. I have had this happen, but only occasionally. It seems to take a special angle to happen, and is certainly not something I could duplicate on purpose. I have never had the two cars become so entangled that the race needed to be stopped, however. I can get untangled within a couple seconds. Sometimes I am able to actually drive right through the other car and continue on with no damage. I don't think it's that big a deal. I would like to see other things fixed instead. AI pitting when the pits are closed, the bunchup on restarts, the stop on the backstretch during cautions, AI slowing to pit speed while still in the racing groove just before pitting with no warning (they do a good job staying on the apron exiting the pits until getting up to speed-- why not on entering..)...

When you're as irritated as I was after experiencing that for the ??***th time and having every bit of concentration thrown out the window because of some stupid bug that should've been fixed years ago you sometimes feel the need to just scream (scream to myself then scream at the newsgroup). What really gets on my nerves is the thinly vailed cursing. My son reads this newsgroup with me and it just burns me that someone feels the NEED to express himself this way. I am 6'3", weigh 280 and work in construction. Trust me, with the exception of some veteran sailors, I can cuss with the best of them. But one of the measures of any man, is the where and the when. When you come to this newsgroup, it is like walking into a friends home, a home you enjoy visiting, a place where the discussion is stimulating and a joy to be involved. But it is a home with children. You should take care in what you say. Just my $0.02 Michael Loos Chicago USA
If your son doesn't know those words, then he isn't going to recognize them, veiled or not. If he does know them, then what are you trying to shield him from? Either way, he didn't learn the words from the people in this newsgroup, did he? I'm a big guy, too, and I was taught that people swear when they are too uneducated to use any other words. I don't have to worry about where I swear because I just don't swear. I don't care if other people do because they are just words and they don't hurt anyone. No. This is a public place. It's not like anyone's private home, it's like a bus station or a shopping mall or a city sidewalk. When you are in public, you sometimes are exposed to things you don't like, but that's the price of sharing that public place with other people. I am a parent, too, and I feel strongly about protecting my daughter from things in the world that are not appropriate for her age and developmental level. What I realize, however, is that her protection is my responsibility and I don't expect the world to police itself for my child's benefit. And mine makes it $0.04. My best to you and your son. ~daxe -----------== Posted via Newsfeeds.Com, Uncensored Usenet News ==---------- http://www.newsfeeds.com The Largest Usenet Servers in the World! ------== Over 73,000 Newsgroups - Including Dedicated Binaries Servers ==-----

Your right, this is a public place, but if I am sitting in a restaurant with my daughter or my wife, and some idiot lets loose with those words while sitting at the next table, then he will hear from me personally. My point was this... There is a time and a place for everything. If you choose to believe that in public, mixed company, or because you just dont feel like policeing yourself, its alright to cuss, then go ahead. But, I, for one, don't figure you to much of a gentleman. It shows that you arent mature enough to have a little paitence. Mike Hey life is nothing but an adventure

You idiot! You can't drive! Leave the group at once! Or so they like to tell me because I occasionally tap another car! :) I'm particularly aware of this at Darlington. That's my favorite oval, but it's SO easy to catch the wall and loose all of your concentration in that instant that I'm almost scared to even enter the track anymore!
I've had this happen a few time and my 4 YEAR OLD Grandson seems to be able to recreate this phenom at will....but then he drives around clockwise and takes out the whole field with 150 MPH head on's (come on admit it so has everyone in here once in a while). I have another beef though. How come it's so dog gone hard to disconnect from the wall? Seems that on most tracks if you drift into the wall in a turn you're stuck there till you get down to about 25MPH. We've all heard Benny P. say what a great job a driver did keeping his car against the wall and out of traffic when it hit. Obviously he never tried N3 cause it's not driving skill it's just another bug. OK so now flame me for hitting the wall in the first place..... there till you get down to about 25MPH. That one is good for dropping instantly to the back of the field, plus incurring damage, plus getting going again in 1st gear while the leaders are now roaring up your rear end. One of my favorites, to be sure..... Darlington's turn 3 &4 are a prime spot for this.

I understand that you want to protect your child as best you can, but from what are you trying to protect him. The world we live in is made up of this kind of thing and that doesn't mean that it is a "bad" place because of it. Swearing per se, does not go hand in hand with being bad. I do swear quite a bit for instance when playing games and am getting frustrated - a spur of the moment thing - though I do personally try to refrain from swearing in NGs. But that's just me. Though I have done on the odd occasion. Obviously if your child is under 10 then I can see that you don't want him picking up words at such an early age, though I would be surprised if he would find the likes of r.a.s that interesting so young. If he is over 10 then chances are he already knows several of these words anyway. You may say that isn't the point, but in that case what are you trying to protect your son from. You say that you swear at work with the best of them, so that would indicate that you don't mind swearing. So why are you trying to protect your son from this kind of thing? Or do you actually have some kind of guilty conscience about swearing. If so, then you really need to look into it. We live in a world of double standards where in one situation things are acceptable and then in another situation they are not. For instance, go to a sporting event and you can expect to hear all kinds of swear words. Even at a bar with friends this is not frowned upon, but then go to church and everyone has to behave as if they are whiter than white and that butter wouldn't melt in their mouths. So people spend their lives being one kind or person in one situation and then another kind of person in the next situation. How dishonest is that? It's as if we're trying to hide the real us behind all these different personas. It is better that you prepare your son as best you can for the rigours of the *** world as soon as you can. It's a tough world out there and the sooner your child realises this then the better it will make him able to cope with it. Being sensitive about swear words doesn't make you a better person or a saint, it just makes you overly sensitive. -- Peter Ives (AKA Ivington)
> Being sensitive about swear words doesn't make >you a better person or a saint, it just makes you overly sensitive. Very nice discourse, Peter. Amen to that, Michael. I was brought up in an era when (a) to use *** or offensive language in public was a no-no and (b) to use certain words in mixed company was certainly not acceptable. Therefore, when one was in a situation when one really needed to let loose (dropping the crow-bar on the foot; hitting the thumb with the hammer; unable to get the nut on the bolt after trying for two hours), those words were just the most wonderful way of releasing the hurt and frustration! But we didn't (and I still don't) use them in general conversation nor as replacements for commas, full-stops, exclamation marks etc. Then the 1990s came along and the "F" word has now become what appears to me to be just another word.....or so society would have us believe. Perhaps those born in the late 1970s & the 1980s have very limited vocabularies and the "F" word is now used as a replacement for adjectives, adverbs and punctuation! To me this is a sad and sorry state of affairs because it has effectively removed what was a great obscenity for use on that special occasion. I still cringe inwardly when I hear it being used in mixed company or when I hear women use it. Does it make them feel "equal" or what? No doubt the "C" word will be the next one removed from the "offensive language" list and then we won't have any special swear-words at all. What am I going to yell when I next drop a brick on my foot........"Oh bummer"? -- Regards, Bruce Kennewell, Canberra, Australia. --------------------------- -----------== Posted via Newsfeeds.Com, Uncensored Usenet News ==---------- http://www.newsfeeds.com The Largest Usenet Servers in the World! ------== Over 73,000 Newsgroups - Including Dedicated Binaries Servers ==-----

It seems that on most tracks this isn't good enough. They come crashing to a halt in front of you to pit before your spotter can even tell you. It'd be nice if someone gave you a warning since the computer obviously knows it's going to pit. JMG
I've seen others *** about that, too. So did I for a while. But watch a race closely - especially the LAST of the season. Can't remember the driver, but he hit the wall going into a corner and couldn't get off the wall till he was just about at a standstill. Seems pretty real to me. While the PHYSICAL reason a real racer gets stuck to a wall the "virtual" reason we do may differ, I think the FACT that it's modeled is pretty accurate. But, hey, I've never driven a car on a racetrack so it's not like I'd know. Gunner
Don't kid yourself. Your son undoubtedly uses all those words and more in the schoolground and with his mates. You may not swear in front of him, but I guarantee he doesn't in front of you either, just behind your back. Glenn

Mmmm, it would seem that your interpretation of my statement above couldn't be further from my what I meant by that statement. For starters, preparing is not training. If I prepare someone how to handle bullying do I do so by making them a bully? And to group the actions of those who hate, kill and destroy with that of swearing is really way off the mark don't you think. Unless you believe they are the same in which case we are at a m***loggerhead which neither of us is going to come to an agreement on. However, my point was if you are against those kinds of things then it is up to you as a parent to explain to your child, when you think s/he is old enough to understand, why you are against those kind of things. It is up to you to let your child know that s/he will come across those kinds of things. Preparing your child certainly isn't about turning him/her into the very things that you are against and the only way to do this is to be as open and honest as possible about those things as soon as the child is ready. There are things in this world that, even if they are unacceptable to you, are still very commonplace. Why would you want to sweep them under the carpet? Isn't it better for your child that, when they start showing an interest, that learning about these things came from you. At least then you can have an influence on how your child should take these things onboard. No. In that case what do I know then? :-) -- Peter Ives - (AKA Ivington) No person's opinions can be said to be more correct than another's, because each is the sole judge of his or her own experience.

nearing Pit In is a good indicator.. No... that is when a car is pitting far in front of you, several seconds in front of you. I'm talking about a car or two that are in the groove, at full speed entering turn three, the field all in line, and then the AI jams on the brakes because someone decided to slow from race speed to pit speed while still in the groove. If you are in that pack, on the low line, there is now warning. The only way around it is when I am in the AI's pit window, I don't drive in the low groove in turn three behind another car. At most tracks, that is not the optimum line to drive, but it beats risking crunching your front end.

I guess I just started doing that automatically when I notice the AI making pit stops. The first one always stops your heart, though...<g> Eldred -- Tiger Stadium R.I.P. 1912-1999 Own Grand Prix Legends? Goto http://gpl.gamestats.com/vroc Never argue with an idiot.
