Notable threadTony Stewart credits NASCAR Racing 2 for learning Watkins Glen

Alison Hine reported that Tony Stewart said on TV that he had learned Watkins Glen, his first race there, by playing NASCAR Racing 2. Others added that Dale Earnhardt Jr raced N2 online on TEN as DaleJr3, along with other drivers and crew members, and that F3000 drivers used GP2 tracks. Some noted Stewart was a talented driver before any sim.

Yesterday in the pre-race show for the Winston Cup race at Watkins Glen, the announcers mentioned that this was Tony Stewart's first ever race at the Glen, and that he had said that he didn't expect to do well. He was as surprised as anyone else when he qualified on the second row. Then they interviewed him. He said, "I guess all those late nights on NASCAR 2 on the computer paid off!" And he gave a big grin. I am not making this up. Tony Stewart said that. I wrote it down on a pad I had sitting on my coffee table. I wish I'd been taping it. I know damn well Papyrus didn't pay him to say that. Pretty exciting validation of our little hobby, isn't it? And he was talking about NASCAR _2_! Alison http://eaglewoman.maximumspeed.com

I taped the race, but not the pre-race show, but I did hear Tony say, clearly, that it was the late nights on the computer playing Nascar 2 that helped him learn his way around the Glen, and that was .......way cool. He's for real, and hearing he enjoyed doing the sim thing just made me like him even more. Go DJ, and Rusty, andTony! -- Ed White DJ and Rusty in '99 GO #2 & #88 > >I am not making this up. I'm curious. I taped the race (on TSN) last night and will watch it to see if he makes the comment. Amazing, isn't it? Philster
You may already know this but Dale Earnhardt Jr. - as well as members of his crew - frequently race N2 on TEN. He's just "one of the gang". His sig says "Race me clean and I'll race you clean..." Very cool if you ask me :) David Cook

He intentionally wrecked me at Dega in one of his early races on TEN. After the race he said he didn't like my line.
I think what they were trying to say is that the game helps them learn the tracks. I believe they were talented before the simulation ever came out. Every little bit helps. Michael K. Same goes for Dale Jr., Jacques Villanueve, and all those other kooks. It's not reality, it's only a game :)

I wonder if he went to the trouble to download his own paintscheme from the net, or maybe drop Skinner's skill numbers down to say, oh, 50. :) Seriously, how else are you going to learn road courses these days? The man had less than 30 minutes of practice at Watkins Glen in his LIFE when he took the green on Sunday!!!

Of course he was, Mike. I've argued the same thing many times on this news group. I said that in the most sarcastic text I could manage :) Does anyone still race on TEN? Oh yeah? Well, Jeff Gordon has a Daytona USA machine at home and that helped him win at Buster Brown's (D&B) during the California 500 weekend! From TV Guide 17-23 July: "Competitive edge: An hour over video games per night. 'Accidents I couldn't avoid before, suddenly I was avoiding. It was all because of the quick hand-eye coordination I'd learned.'" -Tony Stewart "I don't play video games. He made those comments on the NASCAR 2Day preview show, so you probably won't see it in the race broadcast. Gary
Some of the F3000 drivers admit to downloading the updated GP2 tracks on their schedule for a bit of practice - and it really can help them considering they only get 45 minutes to qualify and NO time to pre-race practice! Rob Swindells 3rd equal in Goldline Bearing FFord Championship (18 Points); 9 points behind Championship Leader (as of round 4 of 6) "If you're a great driver, you will get through. It's not harder than any time before." ~Martin Brundle

I remember the first race J. Villeneuve won in F1 (Hungary)... he said something about having "played a video game" that he jokingly suggested might have helped him. I figured it was GP2.

TS knew so little about the track he had to get directions and, I believe, rode out with one of the media crews. His only track-time up to that point was on N2. Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Share what you know. Learn what you don't.

Ive read somewhere also that Dale Earnhardt Jr. also races N2 on a regular basis. Infact, Steve Park and a few others race N2. Ive also read in some magazine (also cant remember off the top of my head) that a few Busch and WC regulars have raced online via NROS and TEN. But who knows WHO or WHEN this has happened InDaGroove on TEN MSmith on VROC Founder of Mach III Motorsports

Dale Earnhardt Jr. does race on TEN under the name DaleJr3. But not sure about a few other names. Have heard that Bobby Labonte and Jeff Gordon have raced on TEN also but as far as I know it hasn't been confirmed. Justin Chase "jcchase"

I'm sure a lot of those guys as well as the lesser-known NASCAR drivers play NROS on a regular basis. Yes, Jr races on TEN. So does Hank Parker Jr., Lyndon Amick (sp), Jerry Nadeau, and at least a couple of others that escape me right now. Dale Jr. has gotten many of his NASCAR buddies hooked on TEN. Some were racers while others were crew members of some of the teams. Mike Mabrey >Dale Earnhardt Jr. does race on TEN under the name DaleJr3. But not sure >about a few other names. As for me,my favorite car is the Brabham, but I find myself driving the Lotus exclusively online. Mosport followed by Watkins Glens are my favorite tracks. Joel Willstein
