Grand Prix 2 rediscovered on modern hardware

Several posters reinstalled Grand Prix 2 and found it ran well and felt more alive on fast late-1990s PCs, calling it the best modern F1 sim with updated car and track sets. Tips covered running it under Windows 98 and sound card setup. Some noted that even a Pentium III struggled with full detail at the Monaco start.

Well.. after playing Mona***Grand Prix Racing 2,, I was longing for a GOOD F1 sim. GP3... too far away. So, I decided to tempt my chance and install GP2 with Win98. My God! the thing works! I have a Logitech USB sterring, a SB Live, and a Guillemot TNT2. Wow I didn't have to configure anything! The only prob I had was that I had to run the pedals combined. GP2 recongnized my steering, and my sound card... I guess Win98 does a great job at supporting old software. If it only could support new software as well:) Back to GP2! What a great game. I get a better sense of speed in this game. I can tell when I am at the limit of braking....It is not 3d accelerated, but it works like a wonder. I remember getting this for my Pentium 90...wow.. this things is much smoother on a PII 450!

I just bought a run-out Thrustmaster T2. I also found my copy of GP2. OH MY GOD!!! Look what 464Mhz and > 1,200 MIPS does for GP2! The car is 100% alive and absolutely WILD! I was never ever satisfied with the way that the cars drove in GP2, not even on p133-p166's. They felt a bit ponderous. Jeez, now with well over 25.6 fps, it's a different story. It shites all over F1RS IMO. Try a few tightly strung together twisting corners like Flinders Street on Adelaide (fantastic track that all Australian fans call home).... absolute nirvana. T.
Tut, tut... you guys! How could you ever doubt this stupendous game? :)) Rob Swindells 3rd equal in Goldline Bearing FFord Championship (18 Points); 9 points behind Championship Leader (as of round 4 of 6) "If you're a great driver, you will get through. Tony, I am having trouble getting GP2 to actually run on my PII450, W98, V2, 128Mb. It appears to install okay but I just can't get into the game, either through DOS, W98 or a DOS window. I never had a moments problem on my "old" system (p166, SVGA card, 32Mb). Any tips, as I'd like to re-experince the best "contemporary" F1 sim?

It's just been re-re-released in the UK - try looking at the hasbro web site, or see if you can get it on import from one of the UK companies. -- AG Remove removes to remove anti-spam measures. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Alan Gauton + Tel +44 141-548-2686 EEE Department, SPD, + Fax +44 141-552-2487 204 George St., Glasgow G1 1XW+ http://www.spd.eee.strath.ac.uk/users/ag ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Never for me the lowered banner, never the last endeavour! Dusted off? Except for short excursions on NFS, Toca 1+2, Viper, Indycar, Nascar, etc. etc. I ALWAYS return to this game. You can keep your VooDooX or TNT nonsense, this is simply the best racing game ever made (of course, I'm still waiting for my copy of GPL to arrive in the mail). I just wish they would spend less time doing lens flare and more time improving the sims.. how about all flags (and in context), safety car, dynamic team orders (changing as championship develops), better overall AI, etc. I sure hope all these things turn up in GP3!! I still play GP2 as well. The game is just phenomenal. Lately I have been playing alot of GPL, but I always return to GP2. Check out Grandprix2.com for updated carsets and teams and stuff. Makes the game even better. Chris

: Um, because there wasn't a computer that could run it decently until : three years after it's release? Was that a trick question? ;-) Actually, I see it the other way... it keeps getting better each year, adding to its value. I started in VGA, no textures in 1996 on a DX2, moved to SVGA, no textures in 1997 on a P133 notebook, then to SVGA, most textures in 1998. Each year a new game! :) Stephen

Despite GPL, I have *always* had GP2 on my HD. And I frequently return to it as it is the best modern F1 sim IMHO, and yes, I have F1RS too! I also have GP2 on my HD at work (crappy PII 266 with a poxy 12Mb TNT card which can't handle GPL too well!) and it's fun great during my lunch time break. I often have people gathering around to watch...... 8-) *Peter* 8-)
Graeme Nash 05 Aug 1999#484247
I did *exactly* the same thing earlier this week. I hadn't driven GP2 for about 8 months and went back to it. Amazing. With a 1999 carset and trackset it walks all over F1RS and MGPRS2 for sheer realism and atmosphere (IMHO!). I can't wait until my new PIII-500 arrives in a few days, I'll finally be able to enjoy the sim at full graphic settings with no slowdown! As a side-note, all that GPL driving I've done certainly helped my GP2 laptimes! Within 6 laps of firing it up, I'd set a new PB at Monza with a 1m21.404! I went from GP2 to GPL and back to GP2. I found GPL improved my throttle/ braking/steering skills, such that I had a lot more fun when I went back to GP2. You're right about the add-ons - when it starts to get a touch repetitive, just download a new track. MarkT I found GPL improved my throttle/braking/steering skills. >I still play GP2 as well. That's what I was looking forward to as well, but even with my new P3 550 I still can't start Monaco and stay below 100%. When I had a P90 I said GP2 needed a P500. I'm refining that, it needs a P1000. Don Scurlock Vancouver,B.C.

Somehow, I would not classify this track as medium to high speed -- the S/F straight is fast, but pretty short -- I think I've heard this track referred to as 'Monaco without the walls'...... Regardless, I DO like racing on it with GP2/MGPRS2
Jason Monds 06 Aug 1999#484461
Ok it might not be high-high speed, but the amount of speed you can carry through some of those turns makes you feel like your going 1000mph :-) The segment after turn 2 is great! As well as the S-turn in the middle section where you can keep accerating through it :-D Jason.

Your system must be crap. Works great on my Celeron 300A running at 450. Everything on except the sky (who wants it) and processor occ. always around 80%. Treat yourself to a decent video card and motherboard. Cheers.....Ken

Well Ken, the system is a fairly new Dell P3 550, TNT2 with 2.08 detonator drivers and Soundblaster Live. It would be hard to do much better at the moment, and I seriously doubt that your system is running GP2 any better. I personally do like the sky, but even with it turned off, starting from the back of the field at Monaco, with everything else turned on, will give me, and I'm sure you, processor occupancies in the 120-150 range through the first corner. Don Scurlock Vancouver,B.C.
with everything else turned on, will give me, and I'm sure you, processor occupancies in the 120-150 range through the first corner.<< Yep. On my C450/V3(very fast 2D) I see the same. However, if memory serves, Monaco's about the only track that'll put it over 100% now, even with the sky on and everything maxed out. Like GPL, GP2 just continues to please. You leave it for a bit and when you go back, you're guaranteed a grin. GP3's the only way it'll ever leave my HD. Cheers, Steve B. remove "edy" from address for email
Yeah, that's where I'm at. p233mmx. In a month or two something around 500. (Haven't decided yet.) I can't wait to see what the sky and mirrors look like. -- Mark Jeangerard www.soundchaserweb.com New Mexico USA

I also reloaded GP2 and had a go. Lotsa fun. Then I went back to GPL and discovered that I had gotten used to sharp control inputs that the GPL cars don't like at all. Question: Are modern F1 cars really that insensitive? Can you just throw them around? bob

Maybe through the first corner, but how long does that last for ? Surely the rate goes up significantly when you get into the race. And anyway, maybe thats the problem. I usually always start at the front of the grid ... ;-) Cheers.....Ken

I'm no expert, but I think it has to do with IRQ settings. On a recent reinstall of WIN95, I installed my SBL first and my modem later. WIN assigned the SBL an address GP2 could see. Prevoiusly, the modem was using the address GP2 wanted for the sound card. Hope this helps. BTW, they're right, GP2 is still a blast! Steve
Loren, GP2 set itself up with no help from me. I running it under windows in a dos box if that helps. It's Nascar Racing that I still can't get to run at all and Need for Speed still won't see my sound card. It never ends. Ken, your right, it only lasts until past the first turn. My criticism is that the game only called for a P90 as the OPTIMAL hardware when it came out three years ago, and it still falters on a P3 550. It's been pretty much accepted that the code is flawed in that way.

I know what you mean and I agree totally. AFAIC - its still the best racing game on the PC and apart from that hiccup with all the cars on the first corner at Monaco, the rest of the game and the other tracks all run really smooth on a half-decent system. A great game and for the amount of hours that myself and 5 friends have got from playing our regular F1 championships, it was well worth the money. I just hope that GP3 doesnt stray too far from what has been a really fun game/sim, and that it has the "unique" multi-player option that only GP2 has. Why other car racing games don't adopt this multi-play option, I really dont know. Its the only way to have a few guys racing each other on the ONE computer. Cheers.....Ken
