Some FYI info on how to spot cheaters. At lest someone is making a stand!
>>>>>>>Cheats
I wanted to give everybody and update on cheats for nascar. In the past
few days I have tested the cheats, as well as speaking with different
companies that deal with cheats on FPS games. I will say this, it's much
harder to cheat on OLR than it is on Sierra. The way the cheat works, is
that you run this program, then start NASCAR. In the game, you have to
disconnect. Not all the way out, but to the point where it ask you to
reconnect, then you start up this program and you can change from clear to
cloudy, weather settings and other variables. On Sierra it's so much
easier; because you don't have to disconnect. You only need to go into
sierra and make the change then go into your race and not worry about
disconnecting. On OLR, it takes you all the way into the game, so drivers
have no choice but to disconnect. On some settings, you have to try
repeated times of connecting and disconnecting until you can get in. From
the other end, it's really obvious; because you will see somebody saying
they are trying to connect and disconnect multiple times.
For Flashpoint starting the winter season, we are not going to allow
drivers to reconnect. Also, on OLR there is no need to set practice for
30 minutes to an hour; because you can setup your own race anytime you
want to gain the practice needed. We are going to run it just like the
TEN days when I used to run in OSCAR and FssPro. If qualify started at
9:30pm ET, we used to have the RS create the race at 9:15pm ET and would
keep it in staging for 10 minutes and would do his DM Drivers Meeting. It
was so much better back then; because everybody was present and the admin
and go over the rules. We had practice set for 5 to 10 minutes and we go
into the race. From then on, no reconnects are allowed. It's during this
time where people can cheat.
I can almost guarantee you, from the changes above you will see a few fast
drivers quit OLR; because they will know their lap times will be slower
and will make any kind of excuse as to why they are quitting. I have also
contacted 3 companies that deal with cheats on First Person Shooter type
games and is very successful stopping this. We currently have other
methods to detect, but I plan to do much more on spotting who are cheaters
are. I will say this... I am not going to tell you when I get this new
software installed; because I plan to catch these people in the act and
will remove them from OLR without any hesitation. They can keep their
money and go elsewhere. Also, we have ways of telling who is signing up,
so don't try creating another screen name or using fictitious names. I
have seen some cheaters sign up as other screen names who were fast
drivers and is no longer here. I'm sure you have noticed some drivers not
racing anymore on OLR that was really fast. We have already taken action
and will continue to do so when it comes to cheats. As you see, we are
not sleeping as some people have said on the forums.
Flame warOnlineRacin.com newsletter on spotting NR2003 cheaters
SPEED posted an OnlineRacin.com newsletter about detecting NR2003 cheats, which some saw as self-promotion. OLR's Joe Lomas defended the service's efforts. The thread turned hostile when SPEED implied Ed Solheim and John Simmons were cheaters, drawing angry replies, and league admins discussed handling suspicious disconnects.

Schooner - I was not promoting OLR. I simply posted their newsletter. It
contained some worthy reading material. It's nice to see someone is finally
going to make a stand! Let's hope other servers will follow.
Sorry for the negative tone, just been getting a lot of emails and seeing
them posting a lot lately. They seemed to be slamming the Sierra servers a
bit was all that I noted.

Doesn't sound like anything an individual who's running a server can do about
it...

Well IF OLR is getting a 'cheat detector' utility...they should be free
to use it as they will on their servers. What would be good for the
community as a whole....would be to provide the utility to any
organization/individual that hosts on Sierra.
The only drawback to this, would be the utility finding it's way into
the hands of cheaters providing the cheaters with a working program to
examine and thus find a way to bypass the detection code.
A third option would be for the commercial companies that build these
fps cheat detectors to SELL a racing version to server hosts. I imagine
there would be several of the proffesional hosts that would appreciate this
kind of program.

It's funny how some people in this newsgroup can turn anything to a
negative. I give free hours for people to test out OLR and get
negative feedback. So I decide to go from Mon thru Sat and again
negative. The companies I deal with doesn't come cheap. People who
continue to cheat get more and more cleaver and continue to find
different ways of cheating, and again you have to get with programmers
to create more sophisticated programs to detect, then they continue to
waste their freaking time with nothing better to do than find other
ways to cheat. If they just spend half of their time PRACTICING then
finding ways to cheat, they would achieve the same result!
When I did the testing I was just about to hang it up and quit all
together. We are doing over 40,000 in prizes each year and I'm
spending some serious bucks in programming, so we can have only our
drivers who win based on practice to get awarded. I wish I had 5000
extra per month to spare, only to make the few happy to race for free,
but I don't have that kind of money to blow away. As for slamming
Sierra, I don't know where that can from. I see many negative post on
here from people slamming each other to post that is so far out in OT,
I don't know why post about OLR would be any different? The email that
I sent out was to all OLR members and former members telling them what
they can do in the meantime. If somebody is going to post on this
forum; which seems to be owned and monitored by those posting negative
responses, then this is my last thread on this newsgroup. when I
sent that to all members, I was beyond pissed with these guys cheating
and planned to spend whatever it takes. For those that get upset with
that and complain; because I don't give them what they want for free;
because of the amount of money I spend on this? You are more than
happen to sell that to my wife, I'm sure she will give you a better
answer than me.
My goal has always been to provide as much features as possible for
the same price. If you hate it, then don't join. Again, this is my
last post. Have fun guys, I'm signing off.

ED, as I stated before - I was not promoting OLR. I simply posted their
newsletter. It contained some worthy reading material. I am not part of OLR.
I signed up for their newsletter a while back and thought, hey.. finally
heres some good news...
Sounds like your a little worried, ED.
Just about everyone here is all for some sort of cheat protection program.
Dunno who play's BF1942 but there's a guy, Dr.Kenneth who created cheat
programs and now he turned the tables. He's creating anti-cheat programs for
all servers.. Maybe this will happen here too.. Let's hope.
So before there's another.. oh oh oh its a self promotion... BS... give it a
break. If your against servers running anti-cheat programs then we all know
who the cheater is. Like some else stated. There's not to much private or
individual servers can do. So at this point sierra racing is still safe for
cheaters unless the host knows what to look for. Such as racers
disconnecting and reconnecting.

There's been talk floating around that papy and sierra knows about
this cheat. If OLR has come up with a way to prevent someone from
using it (or at least detect people who *are* using it, it's a
valuable feather in their marketing cap.
However, they will have to prove that they can do so.
I'd personally like to be able to prevent reconnecting like so:
1) For x number of minutes
2) x number of times
3) or not at all
4) I'd also like to be able to disable alt-tab so they can't tab out
of the game while playing online.
In article <4Anyb.17511$[email hidden]>,
[email hidden] says...
> If your against servers running anti-cheat programs then we all know

Now, that was un-called for. I know for a fact that Ed doesn't cheat,
and you're an asshole for even implying it.
Beyond that, (and you should read this several times just to get it
through your sloped forehead), nobody here said anything about being
"against servers running anti-cheat programs".
Finally, Ed is entitled to his opinion. If his opinion is that this
was a self-promoting publicity gimmick, then let him think that. I
saw it as a fair warning to the people who utilize this type of cheat
that their days are numbered on OLR.
I hope that OLR sees fit to share with us the people that are
cheating so that we can take measures to include these people in our
muzzle lists when we encounter them.
I hate to invoke the name, but the DMCA is a handy tool to pursue and
prosecute people because "cheating" is bypassing the protections
offered and implemented by the software, and it effectively deprives
other customers of the services they're paying for.
I'm in the same boat, Eldred.
In the WSRL, we use 90 minute practice sessions before qual and race. I'm
considering setting up my league server to run an 80 minute practice
session, shutdown the NR03 host, re-fire the host with a 10 minute practice
session (followed by qual and race), and not allow anyone to disconnect once
the server has re-fired the 10 minute session.
From what I read in Joe's message from OLR, that format would keep the
cheating at bay, correct?

I appreciate everything people do for this sport but remember OLR is also a

that is why you sometimes get the negative feedback.
As for your reply, it seems your as negative and bitter as those you accuse,
again that may be why you get the negative feedback.

Joe, the problem with this logic is when it comes from a mindset, mostly one
that enjoys racing.
Most cheaters don't cheat because they can't drive fast any other way; they
cheat because hacking is where they get their pleasure.
You have to keep in mind that sims, particularly racing ones, are the only
gaming genre where cheat codes are frowned upon. Just watch the next commercial
for some action game, or the next magazine issue for gaming, and you'll see them
blatantly advertise cheat codes. It is part of gaming, and something racing sim
enthusiasts will always have to deal with.
I applaud your efforts in maintaining the spirit of sim racing and I've told you
before; Don't get so upset when people flame you for 'not doing enough' or
whatever negative comes from your open forum and two, in my opinion, anyone who
offers a pay to play service for sim racing should be required to do everything
possible to maintain a standard of hack free racing.
You do it as good as anyone Joe. Just keep in mind, most people who support
you, they just choose to be silent about it, which I suppose is understandable
these days. :))
Keep up the good work.

You know, that was such a big deal when TEN was around. That alone stopped a
lot of hacks until N2003 made it true Win native.

Yah - you caught me. I'm the biggest fuckin cheater out there, and
everyone that comeptes against me are just kidding themselves if they

"Actually", I don't know who the fuck you are because you're hiding

same typing style as Don Wilshe, and that makes you an un-educated
loser AND an asshole.

Let me spell it out for you - I didn't say that I thought it was a
promotion gimmick. I said *Ed* did.

Did you actually *read* John's post?
It was responding not to your OLR newsletter post but your response to Ed -
a well known and respected poster on this newsgroup, suggesting *he* was a
cheat. Which is a pretty wild accusation to have made as a relative newcomer
and anonymous poster to the group.
If you did read John's post he is in agreement with the efforts to
counteract cheating, which makes your subsquent post somewhat absurd.
If you fill the need for a slanging match with John feel free, but the
phrase "lamb to the slaughter" comes to mind.
Cheers
Tony
Speed,
you have no idea, do you? If you come in to a news group and call not one
but two people a cheater, you better have the proof, and provide it.
Otherwise, keep your mouth shut. Theres an old saying: "Know thy enemy".
And you just made minimum one enemy. I suggest you check around the sim
community and find out who the two people are, you called cheaters.
Actually, I encourage you to go to The Pits or Racesim Central formus with
your accusations, and see the response you get.
The majority of the posters in this ng are hardcore simmers, and we dispise
cheats. So I suggest you refrain from making baseless accusations if
someone has a different opinion than yours.
I applaud what OLR is trying to do. I hope it succeeds. I also hope that
they share with the whole sim community, any cheaters that they find and
ban.

Problem is, how do you tell if someone disconnects because they're cheating, or
just because their connection is flaky? I'd hate to boot someone just because

Sorry if my post came across as negative or blasting OLR. I was trying
to NOT to be attacking. I think I commented on how it would be "nice" if
OLR would release it's cheat checking program, but of course I wasn't
thinking of the whole picture...you probably would have to pay for such a
program and to just give it away was naive thinking on my part.
I don't run OLR for two reasons...well...three actually..:) 1. I have
a very irregualar work schedule so finding a consistant time to race is
difficult..2. I prefer road racing to ovals...3. I figure the skill level
of a 'pay to race' series has got to be high and committed. Well beyond my
skills....but I do applaud the concept and I really must say you have built
an amazing product.

Sure, but ping rate alone isn't always a determinant of how good someone's
conection is. Jan always had really high pings, but I don't think he got
disco'd often.
But yeah, that's something to look for.

Now this has to be the most thought provoking post I've read in a while.
just made me think you were an idiot over and over.
I was talking about manually ejecting anyone who disconnects and re-connects
during the 10 minute practice session before qual. I don't know of any
automated way of blocking re-connects.

can't be 100% + they are not hacking, you could require them to take a prov, or
even take a lap penalty.
If I got booted, I'd rather be allowed to reconnect, and take my lumps from
having to deal with a disconnect in the way of a racing penalty, than being
banned altogether.
Tough call either way but that might give a guy the benefit of doubt.

I am not the type to air dirty laundry in public Eldred. Suffice it to say
that my problem with OLR is more personal than professional, and goes back
quite a while, pretty much back to their humble beginnings in rural SC and
their original network problems with Quest. My main issue was with their LAN
event in Myrtle Beach a couple of years ago and some dood named Jamie
Blackmon (sp?) IIRC. It was a 'good old boys club' if you will, and if you
weren't privileged enough to be in it, tough luck.
Honestly, for their (OLR's) cost per person per month, you could pool that
money within a league, rent a good co-lo dedicated server somewhere and be
in total control. Stat scripts are a dime a dozen and the hierarchy of the
league would be in it for the racing too, not the profits. I don't care for
the commerical aspect of the whole deal and at the end of the day you have
to know that OLR's bottom line WILL superscede any of the users' concerns or
problems. Their recent concern with cheating within NR2003 is a positive
sign, but they are not the only group working on it and AFAIK are not the
only fix to it either. A league I run in recently had discussions about
changing over to them and cooler heads prevailed, and it was decided to stay
on the dedicated server/website system we were already into. We lost maybe 1
person over the disagreement, but I think we made the correct decision.
They may be able to stay around for a good while (I predicted their demise
before now and they are still going), it appears to draw a lot of newbs to
online racing and I guess it can be a good introduction to online racing,
but for those of us that were here before they showed up and know how things
can be without the influence of commercial interdiction, it isn't all that
appealing really. To each their own, but to me, it is really difficult to
beat a solid, member-run league on their own server with their own website.
Maybe it can serve a larger purpose and that is to be the best place for
pickup races? I don't know as I don't do that. Best of luck to them, but I
will never race there.

than anything else possible. The only thing I see that OLR would be good
for is pickup racing, but even then whenever I would log on there, it was
always a ghost town, so it's purpose for that wasn't any good either. While
I like the PPV aspect of online racing, the core group of sim racers that
made pickup racing fun isn't there anymore. I was a pickup racer from hell
on TEN (as well as running in many leagues), but pickup racing is nothing
like it used to be unfortunately.

Thanks for the kind response. Normally I have to board up the windows and
keep the M4 by the bed when I pan on OLR...Nothing, in my long experience
(been around since just before TEN shut down), is as good as a friendly and
*professionally* run league scenario, period. And by professionally, I don't
mean compensated admins either, I mean to a higher and consistent standard
than the fly-by-night leagues that pop-up weekly, site hosted on free web
space and run on residential cable modem connected servers... :-) I also
mean run by guys that love it enough to get in there each night and mix it
up with you and not just cash the checks at the end of the month. But,
that's just me.
