I'm officially sick of waiting for GPL 1.1 ;-)

Impatience for GPL 1.1 and a GPL versus GP2 spat

Borut Srebotnik said he was sick of waiting for the GPL 1.1 patch, and Graham H claimed GPL was not up to Geoff Crammond's GP2 standard, drawing strong rebuttals about GPL's superior physics. Tony Kloosterman credited Randy Cassidy with doing the patch largely in his spare time and said translation by Sierra Europe was the hold-up. Richard Clegg listed real bugs such as Banshee incompatibility, and Randy Cassidy confirmed the patch fixes an auto-shift setting bug affecting multiple player profiles.

Got that Dual Celeron 464 with WinNT 4.0 waiting for the real thing. Symetrical processing should help GPL and I think online racing should benefit most. One processor servising serial port and AI and the other for graphics. BTW anyone able to get GPL 1.0 stable under NT 4.0. I hope it is corrected in the patch and it is not because of my SBLive that GPL is crashing in NT. Borut

Announcing 1.1 must have been Papys way of trying to get GPL some ofthe glory like the way we are all waiting for GP3 and have waited for GP2 in the past, nice try but face it Papy, GPL ain't up to that good old Geoff Crammond standard.
Well, i think GPL it is up to his standard. It's the first Papy game i've really played every single free moment! Borut

and don't forget, you're getting it for FREE, and that Papyrus/Sierra wasn't oblige to do that patch. So you should all be thankful to them for doing one, since other company probably would not have done it at all !!! So a big applause so be in order for Papyrus/Sierra instead of crying after them !!! Bye Coco

Very well said! But saying other companies are not patching their software is not fair. They do! And many quite faster and more frequently than Papy/Sierra. In Reality you should be thanking Randy, he has been doing this almost totally by himself in his spare time. The hold up is with Sierra Europe and their translation. Randy we are forever indebted to you. Thanks Tony

Excuse me?? Gp2 was good in it's day, but has been completely and utterly blown out of the water by GPL (and nothing has touched it since it's release IMO). I basically stopped playing Gp2 when I got the GPL demo, having grown tired of the many physics quircks in the Gp2 model. Gp3 will have to get rave reviews and good recommendations from a number of trusted friends before I will even consider buying it, but that's beside the point. I can't believe the hype over this patch, it's not like we need it to be able to play the game (like the 3Dfx patch for N2), now do we? -No, it's just an enhancement to what is already a great game. As far as I'm concerned Papy can take all the time they want (and get some work done on N3 while they're at it ;-)). Yes, GPL is ofcourse superb without the patch. But I can't wait for the patch for 2 reasons: 1. Bugfix for the AI braking at Parabolica, Monza 2. The FORCE FEEDBACK!!!!! When it's really crowded I can't hear my own engine, having force feedback will make driving without hearing the engine so much easier... That is, if the ff is up to the Viper Racing standard. Yeah, don't forget Geoff Crammond's superior track record at patching his GP2 right?! Give me a break. And GP2 had missing features such as weather effects etc. that had been promised in the press releases from Microprose. I was a *huge* GP2 fan, but let's not confuse the facts, GP2 was great for it's time (although it had some quirks that Geoff never patched) and GPL is great now, and it also has a few quirks, the difference is that Papyrus *is* patching it. As far as GP3 goes, I'll believe it when I see it, we waited almost 3 years for GP2 after Microprose started releasing press statements about it. Papyrus afraid of GP3? I doubt it (although I hope Geoff really does produce something for them to be fearful of, competition is good for us the fans). The way people are whining about this patch, people would think that there are serious flaws with the original, which there aren't. At least that is to say, there are no real issues that can spoil the pleasure of driving the greatest sim to date in any any significant way. Come on guys, GPL aint perfect (what is), but it aint the end of the world if we have to wait a little longer for some improvements on what is already sitting on top of the pile. All this patch really amounts to is the wax polish on the Ferrari paint job. -- Mark Seery GPML league director http://easyweb.easynet.co.uk/mark.seery/ > Very well said! I went through this whole thing before and don't want to get it started again, Firstly, I think patches are the biggest load of ***on this earth, why can't companies put enough research and testing in before releasing it too early for their own good. But if they won't test them as much as we/I would like then I'm glad they make patches, To be honest GPL has alot of good stuff but its still not the top sim in my mind, thats just an opinion but its my opinion. But anyway, I don't want to get the whole "GPL is the best sim ever and go to hell if you don't think like me" thing going again, so we might as well drop it.
Graham H 05 Jul 1999#478082
no, the only thing GPL beats about GP2 is it has 3DFX support, I can't think of any other.......
Look, many of us were diehard GP2 fanatics for years, so you are preaching to the choir (we know GP2 was great), but that was in GP2's heyday, if you honestly have tried GPL and cannot feel the superior physics of GPL (hint - no canned spins, or how about the changes in camber of the GPL track surfaces among many other improvements) then you might as well quit reading the newsgroup and go back to playing GP2 since nothing new will ever be better for you. So, you can't accept people with different opinion than yours ? Your immune to any criticisms ? Bollocks. GPL is the most accurate racing simulator ever, the patch is NOT even needed, it's one of the few *** software ever that can stand out-of-the-box by itself to any product patched. The GPL testers were incredible from what I have seen, since the product on the shelves was almost bug-free. If you look at the readme.txt of the GPL1.1 patch you will see that the fixes are very minor. -- -- Fran?ois Mnard <ymenard/Nas-Frank> -- NROS Nascar sanctioned Guide http://www.nros.com/ -- SimRacing Online http://www.simracing.com/ -- Official mentally retarded guy of r.a.s. -- May the Downforce be with you... Huh !! ? What about the driving physics ? The 3D track model ? That Ferrari sound ? The Nurburgring ? The turning wheels ? sorry make that just wheels :) No canned spins Realtime racing !! and GPL runs on current equipment, I'm still waiting for a PC that can run GP2 well <G> Oh yeah and the soon to be released force feedback, the reason I want the patch :) GP2 was good in it's time, but times change !! Just my opinion :) -- Ian Parker UKGPL League http://start.at/greenflag --
GPL is fairly bug free, period. Mostly the patch is when it comes out fixing things for new hardware, tweaking things, etc. Until you get the software out and hammered out by thousands of users, no matter how much testing you do in-house will never get all the problems out of software. Not to mention, Papyrus seems to have taken a lot of user feedback in and is adding, expanding, etc some of the features of the game through the patch. Now, lots of companies SAY they do testing and then just frankly dont and come out with bad products with lots of bugs. Thats fine, your opinion of course. Can't think of any other racing simulation for the PC on the market today or in previous years that matches it though.

First of all, please know that i agree with you, bu if you want to convince others, then your arguments should really be better than this. Counterargument: The fact that we're here still playing version 1.0 of GPL, almost a year after it's initial release, to me stands as a towering monument to just how LITTLE work and effort they have done to put out a patch. When Unreal took forever to release a workable patch, i'm sure noone thought that it was because the game was perfect !? Um... it doesn't work on the Voodoo Banshee without a patch (there is no official patch). It requires you to reset controls when you change cars or it will revert to auto gears. It occasionally puts you in your qualifying set up during the race. "Clock smashes" mean that some people find the AI putting in unreasonably fast laps. I'm sure people can think of other bugs. It's only _fairly_ bug free - better than some and worse than some - about average for this day and age. I find it a bit inexcusable that the game will not work as it was intended on my machine so many months after release. It's not like the Banshee is a particularly rare video card. [In fact I bought it specifically because it was so popular figuring that the more popular a card was the less likely there were to be "quirks" for that particular card.] If it wasn't for a user created patch, I couldn't play the game at all. So, as usual the most serious bugs are in fact bugs in the driver software for the various devices that the game must use (the texture corruption is due to a bug in the 3dfx drivers). This is why it's not possible to produce bug-free code first time out - no matter how much you test it before release, some b*gger is going to release a new graphics board / steering wheel / whatever that breaks it in a way that you couldn't possibly have foreseen. Thank goodness for the internet - without it I wouldn't have been able to play *any* of the three driving games I bought - and all the stuff I downloaded was new drivers for the graphics card, steering wheel, Direct3D, DUN, WinSock, ActiveMovie etc. - not patches for the games!

Sounds like Voodoo's bug to me, GPL works with the Voodoo2 which was out when GPL was finalized. Banshee is supposed to be compatable with Voodoo2. I've never even heard of this one, and I change cars a lot. I'll give you this one, it does that IF you're racing on a restored practice session. This is a problem with the limits of racing over the internet, hardly Papyrus' fault. Don McCorkle Libertarian Motorsports

I'm sure it is a bug with the Voodoo Banshee hardware. Every other software company takes the view "better get it to work on all of the most popular hardware". (Admittedly many of them do***that up still but that's beside the point...) Clearly it is possible for GPL to work around the Banshee bug - indeed I believe (hope) that if patch 1.1 ever comes out it will solve this. Let me ask you? What sort of PC do you have? And I bet you don't have a banshee? ASince getting GPL I have had to use try every driver, patch, and what ever to get GPL running, after 6 months its finally running, ok but not perfect, the graphics are completely screwed up really. Just cause its fine for you dosen't mean its fine for us all, differnt machinse react differently to different programs, And in general gameplay: its damn godd, but I wouldn't go as far as saying its the est game EVER.

Yes indeed: the PC is a bucket, and Windows is one huge stinking pile of crap, as you have discovered! ;-) I had the same problem with ALL the games I bought, and they are all now working after I updated drivers for just about everything I could think of (most of them produced by Microsoft)! I get the distinct impression that the "early adopters" (that's us) are playing a huge part in the development and testing of all the bits and pieces that need to be plugged into a PC to play decent games. And we have to pay for the privilege! :-0 PS: I have a Voodoo Banshee and it works fine with GPL(!).

When you come back, you can learn the manual shifting without having to 'unlearn' the auto - and your times will likely drop. If you have more than one player defined on your machine, and they have different settings for auto-shift, etc., then the problem can occur.
