F1RS only sold 12,570 copies in U.S.???

F1 Racing Simulation's poor US sales figures

A Gamecenter feature listed F1 Racing Simulation as selling only 12,570 copies in the US, against roughly 350,000 worldwide, and EA's Superbike World Championship about 7,000. Posters blamed Ubi Soft's year-long US release delay and weak marketing, and the American preference for NASCAR. Discussion also covered the delayed US release of Monaco Grand Prix Racing Simulation 2.

Sold about 350,000 worldwide though! Looks like the US has missed out again! Iain

Maybe many people in the US did what I did. I ordered the British version months before the US version was released here. Well the F1rs rollout here in the States, reminds me of the EF2000 fiasco. Did we see a bunch of print adds?? Did we ever get a big internet announcement? Did we hear on RAS about patch after patch? Did we ever know when the US release was "really" comming? First time I saw F1rs in a store was in the discount bin. There are lots of reasons products don't sell. some are more clear than others. dave henrie

Eh let's see... 350 000 + 12,570 = 362,570. David, where is those million copy sold of F1RS like you said? It seems that nobody talks about MGPRS2 and F1RS anymore here. 350,000 world wide is not so bad, but one wonders if the game actually made much money, taking inot account the FIA License cost.... Z. Please remove NOSPAM from my email address when replying.

I paid $40 (US) from Ubisoft USA in California. I did not buy it from Britain. Kind of strange that UBI would do that, but hey :-) -- Header address intentionally scrambled to ward off the spamming hordes. cisko [AT] ix [DOT] netcom [DOT] com

I hate to break it to ya, but, MGPRS2 is about to be released in the US, so there will be some comments about it when it does come out, most of them probably dealing with the SBLive problems. I'm looking forward to those future RS3 vs GP3 threads.

For SBK its probably that there was a lack of interest for a Road Bike racing game, I baught it the first week it was out and I still love it to death. Its just superb. But personaly I did never like F1RS as it was. GP2000 (or GP3) will be the bomb tho.

I bought a UK import copy from Interact for about $30 shortly after its UK release.

There seems to be a consistent problem here in the US - if a racing game doesn't say NASCAR on it, or if it takes more than a little bit of work to be competitive, only 10K-20K diehard American sim fans will buy it. Unfortunately, this will probably keep much of the future sims off US store shelves. Thank goodness for Interact and Computermate for their European software sales to us (and Papyrus, for GPL) !!! It was a big marketing mistake is why I think it didn't sell shit in the states. There was about a 1 year delay before it was released here in the US. That is completely ridiculous if you ask me. A Year old game released at full price here probably turned a lot of people off. Same with F1rs2. Maybe not a year like the first one but still way too long. Shelf life of a computer game is maybe a month or 2 here unless it is an extrordinary game put out by some big company that always has stuff in a certain section of the pc store (ie Microsoft, Sierra, etc. How much money do you think Ubi lost because of the delays (for whatever reason?, Tobacco, *** ads is what I heard way back when. By the time it finally made it to our shores, There were a lot of "high end" brand new games out. What was the real reason for the long delays in the release here? anyone know? I'm talking about f1rs1 and mgprs2. Mike Lewis

LOL, it was in the org line, and I assumed he's working in a store that sells sauna equipment. Is MGPRS2 even here yet?? I would think that, provided Ubi was whining about sales in the USA, they'd get off their fundaments and release the damn game EVERYWHERE.

There is something goofy, or technical about cross Ocean products. You'd think Ubi would have a fairly robust Distrubution network, especially for the states, don't they also produce N64 and Playstation titles? DiD had a terrible time getting proper distribution of EF2000, had to rerelease the sim as a new product(great 3d upgrades) to get it in the mass market channels here in the States. But if F1rs did go down the toilet over here, then Ubi might be hesitant to throw marketing money away....Now if they teamed up with Eidos and produced my pet project...it would sell like hotcakes... "Laura Croft drives Formula1....crazy" Of course, we'd need to "modify" the ***pit due to certain anato...certain physical features....:) dave henrie -- On May 17, 1999 A Whale was killed off the coast of Washington State.
