The fast setup won't work here. I havent been able to locate a Expert

Mitch
Choosing a RASCAR setup for Le Mans Sarthe
RASCAR drivers looked for a usable fixed setup for the Trans-Am mod at the 1967 Le Mans layout in NR2003, since the default fast setup was unsuitable. Joachim Trensz posted a race setup that David G Fisher and others praised, and the discussion covered top speeds on the Mulsanne, replay analyser versions, shock settings that gave extra speed or caused backflips, and setup philosophy.
Automated summary.
I have a setup that will do 220 on Mulsanne. It does well everywhere else.
The only problem with it, is 1st and 2nd are real slow.
It might be a good place to start, and then just set one setup as the one we
use. Install it on the server and use it.

Well, in lieu of a decent fixed setup, can we make it an open race?
I'll be willing to run with whatever...
Whatever is going to happen needs to happen soon :)

Mitch,
I'm not so sure the FAST setup is all that bad...
It tops out at about 115 on that long straight, with about 500 revs left.
When I think of the incredible drafts we are going to find ourselves in
here, you can't really change the gearing any shorter. I tried it one notch
and was on the light. With the draft, we'll be blowing engines.
This much I know. This track has a Pucker-Factor of 10, that's for sure :)
One mistake here, and you are definitely done for the day.

One other thing that should be considered is changing the track.ini to match
the settings shown at
http://www.theuspits.com/sims/nascar_racing/tptcc-faq.html. I haven't tried
this yet, but it might be a solution to the right front temp problem.

We are talking about the 8 mile course here right? If so, think you
meant 215. Anyway, I don't see how setup matters that much here for a
fixed league race... I mean it is not like it is uncontrollable. BTW,
in the draft I was hitting 220+. Either way, the guy that doesn't
touch the walls will win here... touch the walls and your car simply
dies.

Don't know if you guys will like it, but I've uploaded a Sarthe race
setup to my website yesterday.
Achim
Nice setup Achim. I did a 305.8 with it just now. It handles very nicely,
especially during the long, sweeping right hander at the end of the s/f line
straight. Hit 204 before braking. I think I lose time to you under braking.
Is there a replay analyzer that I can use to view our laps side by side?
It's too late though to use your setup for the RASCAR race Sat., but glad
you made it available. People have been practicing with JS's setup (also
very good, 306.3 is my best so far) this week, and the main difference (to
me at least) between the two seems to be the gearing.

Thanks for the info, David.
Regarding the Replay Analyzer, Martin Granberg's N2003RA allows you to
compare two or more laps in realtime (the cars being represented by
lines drawn on the track in realtime).
It also has a 'merge' feature, but I've never tried that and don't know
whether it simply appends the one to the other so you get one file, or
whether it actually overlays the two cars.

I just remembered, I've been asked by someone else regarding my braking
just recently. He said he can't avoid locking up when braking as hard as
I do.
I didn't think of this at first, but it could very well be the pedals
I'm using. These E3000 pedals have improved my braking and accelerating
considerably, I'm a lot cleaner and smoother now thanks to them.
Maybe that's the reason why you lose time under braking. Just guessing
here of course.

It's such a large track that it's hard to tell where I was losing the 1.8
seconds. It's a pain to practice because it's so large as well. Make a
mistake, and you have to wait three minutes to try again. :-)

Maybe JdF's local replay showed a too high speed. John Prather says his
setup can't go 220 at 70 Clear without draft. He says it seems to maxx
out at about the same speed where the setup I uploaded maxxes out, and
only go a mile or two faster under specific circumstances (entry into
Mulsanne perfect, and later in the race).
Regarding the speed increase later in the race, I wonder whether Papy
still models this 'tempest in the bowl' thing, where the fact that the
air starts rotating with the cars in an oval after the cars have been
driving round and round for a while makes them faster by reducing drag.
I think I remember Papy modelled this in a version of Nx (although I may
be mistaken), and since I can't imagine they had a different way except
to decrease drag after a certain percentage of laps into the race, this
might happen on roadies as well. Incorrectly but explainable?

Hi all,
Well John, I appreciate the "words of support" but, i've never gotten
near 220 on mulsanne at 70/clear with no draft. I remember that race
though, it was fun :). Anyway, I found the replay of the lap in
question (the 3:03), and my max speed on mulsanne is 216. I know
earlier in the race when I was drafting with you and some other
drivers I may very well have hit 220 but not solo.

I'm curious
though, have you actually done this? I know that trick works on speedways
but that's a totally different situation. On a speedway you are using the
banking to compress the car and the damping to achieve full compression
earlier and maintain it longer. At LeMans the only place that you are going
to get compression at anywhere near top speed is going over the hill,
immediately after which you have to get on the brakes. Doesn't seem like it
could make a big difference when the effect would only be working over a
relatively small distance. If it does then I would tend to think that the
aero maps aren't quite right yet.

trying to get the maximum possible top speed... Indeed, the two people
who were using the 1/9 rear shock setup also had a synchronized blow

speed difference is huge over say 1/5 or something, but it probably
works a little bit

Yes Hal. I was messing about yesterday and by setting the rear shocks like I
said I got 118 and a back-flip. Give it a go ;)

Probably not. I just don't have the time or the patience to put in a lot of
time practicing a track like that. Get bored quickly. I honestly don't know
how people can run some of these tracks as much as they do. I feel like I've
eaten too much candy when I spend too much time practicing. :-)

Anything over 2 mins and I lose patience too. Perhaps I should have a
goldfish bowl for a helmet, but I seem to have forgotten the bend I just
braked too early or late at by the time it comes around again!
Cheers

Well of course it is an amazing lap as JohnP is an amazing driver :)

TA seems to be a good place to learn how to make setups from scratch,
as there is so little difference between a good and bad setup at most
tracks when it comes to actual laptimes (tire temps are another
matter). Moreso than any sim I can think of, working on a setup in TA
is more an exercise in building confidence in the car and creating a
platform for turning consistent laps than it is a method for pulling
out every last tenth from a circuit. It's even better if you knock
the grip at some of the addon tracks down to papy level, since lower
grip seems to exaggerate the subtle handling characteristics of a
setup.
I've always been off and on when it comes to making my own setups, but
right now I'm following the old Steve Smith-ism (from 4 wheel drift or
the cart guide - I forget which) where he said that fiddling with the
setup gives you something interesting to do while putting in the
hundreds of laps you need to really know a track well.
Additionally, and I really don't mean this to be vicious, I have no
idea how you guys can run Achim's setups. I had a brief fling with
setups that had soft front bars with stiff shocks and I came about as
close to motion sickness as you can get in front of a PC. I have to
admit that I'm currently a sucker for soft springs/shocks and stiff
bars as it seems to provide the best combination of lateral agility,
grip, top speed, and overall responsiveness (both in terms of how
readily the car reacts to driver input, and how the car's attitude is
relayed back through the sim).. It helps that TA cars seem to be
largely immune to the unpredictable handling that comes into play when
Cup cars bottom out. You can almost get away with 150/450 springs
even at Mosport since slamming the car against the hill at Moss
doesn't cause much in the way of instability.

I guess most people tweak them a bit. Some drivers
I know increase the front a-r bar stiffness a bit.

Makes sense. I could see someone who is an aggressive LFB'er would
probably like them too, just for my style they're horrible. =) I
suppose that's why there's a garage, eh?

Yep :)
My Cup car road setups were tweaked for driveability. Even the first set
of TA setups were tweaked more towards driveability. But I got several
requests from people who said they wanted to give the original setups a
try, so I started uploading these.
The echo was mixed - some said they like them better, others said they
can't drive them anymore. One guy even said they make him seasick <g>
The main difference is that most of the new batch are a bit on the loose
side, except on tracks where many directional changes in quick
succession are required.
The a-r bars as I set them are a compromise. I'm just thinking that
stiffer bars basically increase tirewear and reduce grip. So I use as
little bar as I can without losing laptime.
You might want to try a 1000/1000 combination and see if that makes them
driveable for you.
Another thing where I usually sacrifice for grip is the rebound. I want
the wheels to return to the ground as quickly as possible. That OTOH
makes the car sway and wobble more. So increasing the rebound a click
may also make the car feel more stable (while in reality of course it
isn't).
