RASCAR Sebring fixed setup choice and lap times

David G Fisher asked for feedback on the LeBlanc70 fixed setup for RASCAR's Trans-Am race at Sebring. Jan Verschueren and Haqsau criticised its handling, and Joachim Trensz made a new setup that ran 1:56. After an informal vote the league adopted it, though some still had problems with gearing, tyre temperatures and front tyres wearing out.

If there's any complaints about this setup (LeBlanc70), let's hear them now because tomorrow would be the absolutely last day to make any changes. Also, what times have you been seeing with this setup? I tried this track for the first time today. Started out with a 2:07, and finished with a 2:01. I don't have a reference for what a good time would be though. David G Fisher
Almost forgot. Am I the only one who's tach bounces all over the place? No its not just your tach. Jeez I just rebuilt my pedals and thought I screwed something up. I was just about to tear into em again. I like this setup ok. I think this track will be pretty tough no matter the setup. Has to be the bumpiest Papy track Ive seen. After running ETCC Bathurts ;) she's smooth as a que ball though <g>. I just ran some laps at Symmons Plains from our buddy Steve Whitty. Great track, maybe we should run it after this weeks main event? Get it at the Pits. Mitch Mitch
Ya, its a real bumpy track, but I like the bumps, looks/sounds/feels cool. The Pits even commented on the bumps in their description about the track. Best time I have got so far is about a 2:02.5. I figure someone will be below 2:00 come Sat. I like the setup ok. Like all the rest of the setups, better to brake early than late... can spin around real easy. There are a couple of sections that I am struggling with were if you don't hit it just right you can loop it... hopefully I will have it figured out by Sat. On the plus side, the sections were you can go off track there is pavement and the wall is a ways away so if you lose it, it doesn't necessarily mean you will wreck your car. Pretty much the same as Sarthe... it's a landyacht. No steering authority whatsoever. I don't get this: these are GTs for crying out loud, why do people set them up to wallow all over the place? -It jacks down so badly on the soft springs it still skips on the bumps, so what's the use of running it *this* soft? Track is also really underdetailed, IMO. Hard to have any real sense of position / trajectory. However, I can't test again and provide an alternative until Friday night my time, so go with it. I'll try to work up some enthousiasm to be in the race. > Also, what times have you been seeing with this setup? I tried > this track for the first time today. I started out 2m20s and got down to 2m10.8s... major communication problem between me and that Vette, I tell ya. Jan. =---
I'm glad you said that, I thought it was just me this time. First time I drove the setup I thought it was ok, but that was just because I was still learning the track and not really pushing it. Now that I have a little bit of an understanding of the track and can push it harder I am all over the place. I feel like I can steer it, I just feel like the back end is refusing to follow the front end. Can't get through the approach to turn 15 without spinning. I get very loose at the second dogleg left on the approach, which I don't understand because on the map (http://www.sebringraceway.com/graphics/pgnames/pic_track2.jpg) that doesn't even look like much of a bend. Oh well, I'll do my best to learn it and if I can't keep it on the track I will sit this one out. Oh well, I'll do my best to learn it andif > I can't keep it on the track I will sit this one out. FWIW, I had the same response initially with the leblanc70 setup, but if I just backed off the steering ratio to 18:1, it was much easier to drive. Really settled the car down. Got to 2:06 in my first five laps, even though I'm still looking for the EA version's corners and am a long way from learning this version. In fact, that's something I do with most all of the PTA setups, since my LWF wheel only goes to 220 degrees. Remember; if someone develops a setup using a 270 degree wheel, the steering response at say, 15:1 for someone using a 220 degree wheel will feel like it would've to the setup developer at 12:1. So to get the same response as the 270 degree wheel I'd have to run 18.4:1. Thus my usual choice of 18 to 20. As fixed setup races don't allow you to modify the ratio, you guys may want to consider how the ratio may affect different drivers due to their at-home equipment and add a couple of clicks for good measure. Anyone who wants can then just short calibrate their wheel for the event. SB
Dunno. I can't race the track long enough to find out. In 20 minutes of practice, I had FIVE crashes to the desktop. This is the only track that does it (so far). -Larry "David G Fisher" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > If there's any complaints about this setup (LeBlanc70), let's hear themnow > because tomorrow would be the absolutely last day to make any changes. > > Also, what times have you been seeing with this setup? I had problems too at first. Now I can run real consistent stable laps. There were a few turns that really threw me for a loop at the beginning but I finally figured out the line through them. This is a setup/track where you sometimes have to slow down to go faster. Once you have the line figured out and realize that in some places it is best to stay out of the gas and almost coast along it will become much easier. Not that I still don't screw up, but like most good challenging tracks, if you miss the line... Anyway, I like the setup... and the track. Since I just can't help but accepting a challenge ;) I've made a setup for Sebring, meant to be relatively stable. I've done a couple of 1:58's with it at 70 Clear with half a tank of fuel on board... so if anyone wants to try... ;) Achim
I had just sat down to search some sites for a better setup for this track, and then I saw this. :-) I'm absolutely positive this is a better setup. Better through the turns (less understeer), better under braking, easier to drive, and also faster. You can push harder and throw the car around more than you can with the leblanc setup. I managed a 159.5, which was an immeditate drop of 1.5 seconds off my my best time with the other. I also noticed the tire wear seems less, and the temps aren't an issue. RASCAR drivers should try out the setup and then post your thoughts to this thread as soon as possible. Get the setup here. http://users.skynet.be/AchimT/start.html Thanks Joachim! David G Fisher BTW, I'm going to take some motion sickness pills before I race on Sat. This track is bumpy enough that I start feeling a little lightheaded after 10 laps or so. :-p "Joachim Trensz" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:bulk3m$jc66d$[email hidden]... > David G Fisher wrote: > > If there's any complaints about this setup (LeBlanc70), let's hear themnow > > because tomorrow would be the absolutely last day to make any changes. > > > > Also, what times have you been seeing with this setup? Just FYI, I've taken the setup down to a 1:56.945 meanwhile... Achim
Still can Jo/Steve. Im sure it was left that way to help accomadate all the many controllers. Mitch "Joachim Trensz" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:bulci5$j8hv0$[email hidden]...

Personally I won't have time to turn any laps with any other setups and its already pretty late in the week for a change. I can adjust to the other setup if required though. >>IMHO<< If we are going to do this without having proven setups, and have to deal with this each week, then we should just run open setups for the rest of the TA sessions. BTW.... For those of you running under 2 min lap times, tell me (and be honest :)), just how much are you chopping off the last right-hander before the finish line? Watching the Sebring video at the link posted in the "Awesome onboard vids" thread helped a lot. I still have a bit of trouble with the same corners but I am starting to get it. Finally got under 2:10. "Brian Oster" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Then read this thread & saw that Achim had made a setup for Sebring, & was turning 1:56. Oh well ;o( Time to d/l a new setup. Dave says it's pretty good, & he liked the RA setup, too. This just shows how different driving styles like different setups, 'cause while I could go faster w/ Achim's setup (2:00.395), it was less stable & forgiving (for me). Overall, I am slower w/ this one than w/ the original, & that surprised me, because I really *liked* his setup ("fast") for RA, & most didn't. Funny thing was, after being frustrated for over an hr, I tried the original (leblanc70) setup again, & within 3 laps did a 1:59.9 *only* ~3 sec off Achim's pace, & ~.5 off Dave's. That said, if others think it's better & we go w/Achim's, I can live with it. -Brian

Hi Jan, I made the gears a tad longer to make sure there are no blown engines. You could just reduce the final ratio by a click, probably. Achim

:) The feedback I got for my Cup car RC setups (which were tweaked for stability), was ~90% 'nice and stable, good setup', and ~10% 'a bit understeering, I like it a tad more lose'. Then people started asking for the setups I'm using myself, so when the TA physics came, from the second batch on I uploaded the setups I was using myself. Since then, the feedback has been ~70% 'I can't drive them' versus ~30% 'yep good setups' <g> Now I started a little Poll on my website regarding what type of setups people want, and the votes I'm getting are ~66% in favour of me continuing to upload the 'lose' setups versus ~33% in favour of setups tweaked for stability :) Confusing :) Achim

I don't have any race experience at Sebring, but I felt it's better to be safe than sorry, especially since longer gears don't increase the laptimes at this track. My 1:56 was done with these longer gears. I've also set the tape to 65 although 70 worked well in testing, for the same reason - I wanted a safety margin. Achim

I had a 1:59.5 with LeBlanc but the feel is really poor. I don't have any hope though of hitting 156.9. :-) thanks for the feedback. I just posted that 1:56 here to give you guys an outline of what's in the setup, as, understandably, I know nobody wants to waste time on a setup that just can't go as fast as required. I've btw dug up my old RoadA setup again and tried to make it easier to drive, and I think I succeeded. The setup is maybe a tenth or two slower than the old one, but I think it's considerably easier to drive. I'll upload it in the next days - too late for you guys of course, I know. Achim

With the gear ratio I have uploaded, the red light flickers briefly for me before I have to start braking. When I said I made the gears a tad longer, I didn't mean I made them _too_ long. I just made them a tad longer because with the previous ratios I had to go too far into the 'red light zone' before I got to the brake point. And don't forget, I touch the redline without any other cars around. In the race you will need _some_ margin for draft situations! Achim
What I meant is that I only use 6th once during the entire lap (as opposed to "from time to time" as you said). I hit 178 before braking on the long backstretch, and the rev limiter seems to be at the correct position. I agree with what Joachim said. If the gear was any shorter, there would probably be a problem if you were in traffic on that section of the track. Achim, is your Sebring replay with the tape at 70 or 65? The reason I'm asking is that in your replay the temp is over 220 & the temp lite comes on on the long backstretch, after only 2-3 laps? -Brian

That must have been with the tape set to 70 (using the test setup). The 65 should be safe to use for the race. Achim

I just went back to Sebring to be sure, and did a few more laps. With 70, the red light came on occasionally as early as in lap 2, also more often than I'd remembered. It's definitely good to have it set to 65 for the race if the outside temp is 70. The host might even set it to 60, it doesn't change the behaviour of the car in any way, it just gives an additional safety margin (although not needed according to my testing). I've also uploaded a new replay, if anyone's interested. Achim

I don't try to, but since I generally suck at road courses (though I'm better after the off-season stuff), it's usually not my doing LOL! -Larry "David G Fisher" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > I don't cut the turn at all. It's not the fastest way through that turnIMO.

Be advised, you must pick up your Boat Anchor in the pits prior to exiting for the race. :) -Larry "David G Fisher" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Since I actually enjoyed that track, I was going to do two things to the setup: 1. Fix the blasted brake bias :) 2. Either extend 3rd gear or shorten 4th gear for the esses to get rid of the shift required through that stretch and up to the slow right-handers. Maybe tighten up the sway-bars a bit to get the car to not wallow as much. Other than that, I was pretty happy with it. -Larry "Joachim Trensz" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:buqhnh$kmsh8$[email hidden]... > David G Fisher wrote: > ... > > I couldn't do any laps yesterday, but I did another 23 tonight andbrought > > my best down to a 158.6. Blasphemy! :) But if we must run a road coarse for whatever reason (I suspect you're talking about an off-weekend for NASCAR), then it's a good choice :) -Larry "David G Fisher" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > We may very well be running that track with the TA cars at some pointduring > the Cup season, so I'm sure it would be appreciated. > > David G Fisher > >

By the way, I'm doing better (1:59.4xx) w/ your setup after some practice... I guess it's ok ;o) -Brian
