Which is better, F1RS or GP2?

F1RS or GP2: another sim war

A prospective buyer asked whether F1 Racing Simulation or GP2 was better, starting another long sim war. One side called GP2 more realistic and F1RS arcade, the other called GP2 dated, lacking weather and 3D support, and both labels were treated as trolls. Moderate voices suggested buying both since GP2 was in the bargain bin and pointed to the upcoming GPL.

As I am probably going to get a brand new computer sometime in the near future that can flawlessly handle either, I am wondering which simulation is better.

Currently, F1RS is best on a 3dfx card but maybe F1RS2 will have a more optimal directx6 version. Keith.
F1RS is way better once you get the game set up. I had problems getting my wheel\pedal combo working. But once everything was working properly, f1RS has better graphics and car control etc. I imagine it depends on your computer also. I have a PII 300 with 64 SDRAM and a Viper V330 video card.

F1RS is far superior to GP2 in every respect. In fact it makes GP2 look like it was designed for the Atari.

With GP2 now in the bargain bin, i'd suggest getting both. F1RS looks and runs great, but i've actually gone back to playing GP2 because i personally prefer it's driving model. >F1RS is far superior to GP2 in every respect. >In fact it makes GP2 look like it was designed for the Atari. EVERY respect? Sorry, I disagree. The look of the cars are better in GP2. The pitstop is better in GP2. The AI is better in GP2. The mirrors are better in GP2. The AutoLoadLastSetup is better in GP2. The sound is better in GP2. In Holland GP2 was in the top 10 until last December, that more than 1 year! F1RS only was 2 months in the top 10. F1RS is a great game, no doubt about that. But there are some things that could be improved. Remco
> As I am probably going to get a brand new computer sometime in the near > future that > can flawlessly handle either, I am wondering which simulation is better. Great question to start a decent sim war <g> Personally I haven't played F1RS much. I love the sound effects in GP2, beats F1RS hands down IMHO. > As I am probably going to get a brand new computer sometime in the near > future that > can flawlessly handle either, I am wondering which simulation is better. I'm just copying this from one of my prior posts: --- Some people like F1RS, some don't. For me, F1RS is the first racing sim I can drive like a car. I love that delicious feeling of*** the car on the edge of adhesion. I think that in GP2, the cars are either on rails, or backward on the track. Some feel that this is the way it would be. Drivers are quoted as saying that the transition between traction and loss of control is very fast. GP2 models a faster transition than F1RS, but there are many things that go into a physics model, and I'm not sure, on balance, that GP2 has them better than F1RS. I haven't heard Michael Schumacher post his opinion. So I'm enjoying F1RS, which feels VERY right, based on my experience with sports and sporty cars I drive on roads, I loved GP2, which is as much like my car as a Starwars Tie Fighter. It has been retired. --- Good luck. Larry

>You think a PII 266 will cut it? Will run GP2 like a dream, if you don't turn all of the textures on. But who needs clouds in the sky anyway? Both games have their pros and cons. So buy both and try them. But remember you need a 3Dfx card for F1RS. (And for a lot of other games, such as the imminent Grand Prix Legends, which is vastly superior to both...) Good luck, Leo
> You think a PII 266 will cut it? Hi Tech (did you catch the pun?)... I will assume you're asking that question about GP2, right? If so, then I can give you an answer of sorts. (If you were asking about F1RS, sorry, I don't have it.) ANYWAY... I have a P233 MMX with a poor vid card (S3 Virge w/4meg) and I can run GP2 smoothly with almost all the eye-candy "on"... yet still have the processor occupancy level below 100%. However at Monaco, I have to trim the graphics level back more. Those tall city buildings take tons of processor capacity, I guess. In all, I'm pleased with the eye-candy and game play I get with GP2 on my system. One of these days, I'll get a good 3D card, and perhaps try F1RS... but until then GP2 it is. I think somebody mentioned that GP2 has hit the bargain bins at some stores (read: "cheap")... so why not just get both GP2 and F1RS and decide for yourself? BTW, I do think you have to install a patch (or patches?) to get F1RS up to speed, so remember that as well. Have fun... Andre Ming

> to me F1rs always feels like I'm floating along above the track (a > 3dfx symptom perhaps?) > whereas GP2 feels more like I expect. > But it is very subjective: get them both and decide for yourself. I know what you are talking about. My thinking is that at 40 MPH I get that drifting going around a curve in my car. It is the tires squirming and slipping on the road. I believe extrapolating this to 120 MPH, or 150 MPH, would result in that "Floating" feeling you describe. A small slip angle at that speed would feel like a lot of transversal movement. People whose opinion I respect, don't think it would work like this in a Formula 1 car. All I know is that it fits with my experience and expectations, which are at 100 MPH less, with a quarter of the tire contact patch, in small cars that weigh 1000 pounds more. We drive so much we have our expectations of how a car should handle. Many people love F1RS, I think this is why. I'm NOT suggesting that F1RS is accurate. I'm skeptical of those who claim GP2 is. I think that floating feeling, and other subtle things F1RS models, are the most important aspects of what makes driving fast on real twisty roads fun. Michael Schomacher? Johnny Herbert? I aint no pro driver. Heck, I aint even fast. But in my second year of karting, every single person I've raced against, that I've talked too, and a few mechanics and spectators say I have a beautiful and surprising driving style. (You'll just have to see me to know.) I like it when the kart is sliding. I like it when I hear the aluminum clank as I apply *full* lock. (You don't see many do that!) I like to drive above 9,500 rpms at all times, and I like it when I get air. I know, to the pound, how much weight is on each corner of the cart at all times. (Just call it a gift.) My kart is a true, blue *** racing vehicle. (Gold Firefox - RM125) So, there are certain characteristics that racing vehicles exhibit that I can confirm. Keeping in mind that wings are a whole different thing all together - I still think my argument is valid. Instantaneous transition from intention to reality - The racing breed of vehicle will try to snap your head off with every gesture you make. These include (but are not limited to) acceleration, braking, and turn in. Stepping on the gas is *** and frightening the first time you do it in a racing vehicle. The kart reacts immediately to throttle input and you'd better be sure you have the weight *exactly* where you want it when you do step on the throttle. The kart can react in a multitude of ways, and disaster has the greater probability if you are unaware of what you are telling the kart to do. I would assume an F1 car to be a lot the same. My road car however, is not like that. Braking will produce fewer problems but all problems can end up the same way. Braking in a kart is very precise and powerful. If I were to brake 5 inches earlier in most turns, I could almost guarantee getting rearended. My road car however, is not like that. And turn in is the most beautiful thing in a racing vehicle. There is no hesitation, just reaction. I can tell by watching the TV that an F1 car and a kart turn in very much like each other. My road car however, is not like that. So I may know a little about the way it feels and looks. F1RS does NOT simulate any of the attributes I've mentioned above. It does, however, feel quite a bit like my road car. GP2 does simulate the attributes I've mentioned above. CPR is even better. I would say that GP2 is a driving sim. Although 1 generation behind F1RS. But that does not mean F1RS is a better driving sim. It's not. It's a very simmer friendly arcade. Maybe a racing sim. But F1RS is not a driving sim. Not by any stretch of the imagination. GPL is a driving sim if you need to make a comparison. It's every bit about balance. BTW A slide at 90 mph feels exactly the same as a slide at 40 mph. There is nothing "floating" about it. It is still gritty and detailed. It just happens twice as fast. :-) -- mark - 2nd place (at the moment) F1 Racing League - Ace class - No helps "You don't actually see the side of the road, you just *know* were it is... and you calmly slide both your outside wheels right to it. Yo bubba, I agree with you. The thing that got me about yourname (whom I agree with BTW) was he sounded like Jean Alesi or something. So I figured what the heck I'll ask :-) -- Header address intentionally scrambled to ward off the spamming hordes. >> What in the hell do any of you punks, putting these sims down, even know >> about driving, i think F1rs is too hard for you guys that hate it, >> you know if any of you had ever driven an open wheeled car , you could >> talk your ***about driving models, but since none of you have , then > i don't think you have an inclincling >> of knowledge about how these autos would, or should act, and react, >To Which Greg Sisco asked: >> Well who in the hell are you? >To which Somebody else said: >> I don't know who the hell he is either, but he is probably about 99.5% >> right:-) >And I add: >I don't know who he is either, I figure he's probably right also... but >I think the indignation came not so much as to WHO he is, but as to HOW >he said it. Your Name wrote Looks like a cartoon, but with the ***menu that's the only complaint about F1RS I have (well, taking out that Monaco GP they want to sell us that looks like F1RS with the patch 1.2). Many of us are real-life driver, you can understand that ? ok... well graphics are probably the last thing we care about racing simulators. It's not important, too most of our eyes. I run Gp2 in VGA just to have the 25fps all the time, I would get aroun 20 in Svga but who cares about the eye-candy if you are a real driver. When you look at the graphics you will end up in the wall. Oh and if you think that F1RS has some good racing graphics you ain't seen nothing yet... GPL mister GPL !!! LOL, you ain't seen nothing yet !!! Nascar3 mister Nascar3 !!! ;-P - Fran?ois Mnard <ymenard> Good race at the Brickyard, (-o-) - Official Mentally retarded guy of r.a.s. - Member of the r.a.s.
