Here's what I've deduced:
If you play sim racers, you like NFS
If you play arcade racers, you like NFS2.
I like NFS2. I played the demo of NFS and thought it sucked cause the car
spun around every time you tried to turn too fast. I personally hate sims
cause if you go too fast, you can't control the car, i.e. F1RS, you gotta
slow down to 2 MPH (I'm exaggerating) to turn the corners. I think EA is
turning the NFS series into a mainly arcade game because arcade games allow
you to go faster (Need for SPEED). But NFS3 will have a sim mode, and it
probably will be a lot more like NFS, to address the complaints some people
had about NFS2 (just like they brought the cops back). So I think everyone
will end up happy. Remember, it's PRE-BETA, and you can't judge much from
it, it can only get better. Hmm, that was longer than I thought it would be.

Need for Speed 1 versus Need for Speed 2
A poster claimed sim fans prefer the original Need for Speed and arcade fans NFS2. Others agreed NFS1 had a more realistic driving model, cockpit views and character, while NFS2 SE was criticised for its chase-cam focus, uniform handling and poor engine sounds. Test Drive 2 was fondly remembered.

Hey genius... it was a cross post that was also in a 3dfx newsgroup.
People have different tastes. This guy wants to go fast all the
time. so let him. He very astutely pointed out that this version
should satisfy everyone. Posts like yours really make me wonder
about the evolution of man...

Is this for sure? I thought the handling in NFS1 was GREAT. Are they also
bringing back the***pit view? I had dismissed NFS3, 'cause I thought it
would be more of NFS2, but now I'm interested.
Yes, dashboards will be back in NFS3 (if you have enough video ram).
Where did you read that it is RAM dependent?

I like "realistic arcade racers", so NFS 1 was my favourite PC game of
all time. However, I loathed NFS2SE even though I do like a GOOD
arcade racer.
I hope so (downloading the demo as I write).

In the Voodoo magazine. Although, that article was writen awhile back. It
does not say how much is enough though.

To me? The flying behind the car nonsense! ;^)

Most people I know play that way, especially console gamers. I love being
able to see the car. I constantly switch views during a race, got the camera
button right above accelerate. No one's forcing you to use it.

Driving model was crappy, all the cars felt the same, trucks
absolutely sucked, no interesting gameplay (i.e., cops or something),
graphics were flashy but non-functional in important areas (the
infamous backwards road textures at high speeds).

I won't play without using my Voodoo! Use the Voodoo, and flying behind
the car
nonsense is the only option in NFS2 SE... That's why it was bad, for me.

My sister couldn't race for ***till she used the bumper car view. And
that's not the only option in NFS 2 SE, there's the chase view, the heli
view, and the bumper view.

I'm still waiting for someone to de-throne Test Drive 2. Not since Test
Drive 2 have I replayed a racing game so much. I have never been able to
control a car from a***pit view (my favorite) since Test Drive 2.

Some of you guys are so damned picky. I hate to tell you this, but until
we have titles that slam us around, put off the smell of burning ***
and all of the other nuances of racing, there will NEVER be a TRUE
racing simulator under the specifics that some of you cite. Why argue
about what is and isn't a sim (in my humble opinion, anything that
controllably simulates driving qualifies)? Why can't you just have some
fun? And, while you're at it, let others have fun too?
Sorry, I guess I vented a little there ;-)

You asked for my reason, not to like it. I really didn't want
to convince you to hate it, too.

I've got to agree with you there! Nothing seems to come close to that.
Not only do you have cops that went for the "other guy" (I usually went
55mph when I heard the cops and they usually blew by me and went after
the computer guy) but there was also damage to the cars when you went
over a pot hole. I remember one time my car lost steering to the right
and it was tough making the car go straight. That was fun.
You guys all left out one major point to why NFS2 sucked, the sound. It is
awlful. In NFS you felt like you where in a corvette not only becuase of
the graphics, but it rumbled like a vette. In NFS2 everything sounds the
same, bad. Sure, the background sounds are nice, but the engines just suck.
I figure that EA thinks everyone races with the music on, but I can't stand
the music, never could. It's a major flaw in all windows games. I have
never heard a direct sound racing game that sounded really good. No racing
game before or since sounded so cool when racing. Hell, in NFS2 the beatle
sounded more realistic then the Mac. F1! It looks like more of the same in
NFS3. The graphics look great, but the poor sound in the demo means I will
be thinking twice before purchasing. Also, as far as I can tell why is EA
not including directsound3d or A3d support in the game, I have seen nothing
about any such support, and this is a type of game I would think would
benifit immensly from such support.

I stated that in one of my first mails concerning the NFS III-demo. I'll
never understand why there's NO racingsim with a approx. real enginesound.
Dows someone remember the Test drive IV-hype a few month ago ?? There were
soundclips for the download that sounded so REAL that I couldn't hold my
breath. Accolade claimed that the sound will be in the game too - but it
wasn't. IMHO it was only a sampled sound :-/
Also, man mailt sich...
