F1RS: Hmmm

Players debate whether F1RS is still enjoyable

A player said he could no longer enjoy F1 Racing Simulation despite its features and was moving to GPL. Greg Cisko defended F1RS as the best F1 sim and the exchanges became personal. Specific complaints covered AI that brakes too early in braking zones and sound that did not reflect the physics, while defenders found it the first sim that drove like a car at the limit.

Ok, after a long period of not playing this sim due to a broken wheel I decided to try my hand again today. No matter how much I try to like this sim, I just can't. I've kidded myself for ages and ages that it's great- it has all the features I want, stuff not found in GP2- but it's just not likable. I think this is partly reflective of the era: F1 cars don't look fun to drive at the moment, though there's something I can't put my finger on that spoils the game. It's the overall feel perhaps. F1GP and GP2 were both great fun, but F1RS just doesn't have it, plus it still feels too buggy... the physics are shit, especially when a car goes flying, and the AI are only too happy to drive into the back of you. I guess what I'm saying is; I need a GP3, to bring some fun back into my simracing. Come on Geoff, get yer finger out :) -- Spudgun
You seem to be where I am, so I suggest GPL as a challenge before we get GP3 :o). Or why not go back to GP2, as I have done inspite of leaving GP2 after 800 hours a couple of month ago. Download the lastest carset, restrict your setup so you're a little slower than the top AI on the straights and in corners, then race 100% races at Ace level in the middle of the field fighting for that 6 position. I've just done this at Magny with the carset setup to simulate the latest Magny race. It was the most realistic F1 race I've ever driven. I even passed Ralf in the pits, cause of a little faster pit stop by my team :o). I ended up fifth :o). /Christer -- http://home4.swipnet.se/~w-41236/ (Read all about the "Global online racing"-proposal under "For developers". Read it a couple of times, cause noone has understood it the first time they've read it yet :o) )

I've driven TOCA quite a bit to be honest. It soon wears off after a bit, mainly due to bad design (not being able to qual well then thrashing everyone in the race does nothing to keep you interested or motivated). However, I'm expecting TOCA 2 to be fantastic, the same applying to CMRally. -- Spudgun

Yeah, I've been playing GPL. It certainly a good game, and the physics, the graphics and the, well everything, is so spot on you can't argue or get frustrated with it at all. The problem is, Watkins Glen is getting a bit boring now. Let me loose on the Nurburgring :) -- Spudgun

I have a 3Dfx card and the frame rate isn't the problem with F1RS. Greg, I suspect you dont drive without the helps found in F1RS (ABS, anti-skid and anti-spin). If you do drive without these helps and still think F1RS is the best F1 racing sim, I cant help you :o). Without any of those helps I have for example a 1:28.4 at Melbourne, not cuting any corners or anything. I dont even use the ideal trajectory. Just so you know I mastered F1RS. You can download my ghost from my home page below. What really pushed me over the edge to stop driving in F1RS was the bugs. I got over 100 hours in it, though, but no more. I gave up on F1RS before the 1.09 patch came out, so I had to go through all the other patches, which really tried my patience. I didn't like the sound, but I got used to it. The physics is not very good. GP2 has still much better physics in my humble opinion, which I alse drive without any helps or aids. The AI in GP2 is much better than F1RS, IMO. There are three very important parts in a racing sim; graphics, physics and AI, and GP2 wins clearly in two out of three and on a Celeron 400 MHz the graphics in GP2 is as good as the 3Dfx graphics in F1RS, which IMO are too cartoonish. This is of course not strange at all since Geoff Crammond has been doing F1 sims for over 10 years and Ubisoft is on their first attempt. F1RS2 could be a serious contender to GP3, though, but I doubt it :o). /Christer, not trying to make trouble, just think physics and AI is more important than graphics -- http://home4.swipnet.se/~w-41236/ (Read all about the "Global online racing"-proposal under "For developers". Greg, Everyone interested in F1 simracing in this group knows you arse-kiss F1RS. The fact is that F1RS blows. If you want to see real physics modelling, download the GPL demo, now that's realistic and hopefully it won't need 9 patches to make it _half_finished once it's released. F1RS has bad AI... they drive straight into you and on some corners they are so slow they are dangerous, like in the complex at Silverstone. The replays suck, and feel half-finished. The damage model is rubbish. There are still stupid bugs after 9 patches, like on certain tracks where on exiting the replay, half the field becomes wiped out for no apparent reason, and where if you decide to pit for fuel a lap early you must pit again on your scheduled lap. The menus are crap, etc. etc. See? I'm not basing it on how it reacts in the air. And for your information I do have a 3dfx card- F1RS is simply unplayable without one. -- Spudgun

I have raced every F1 racing PC game available. There is no way IMHO that any others are currently better. GP2 is disqualified IMHO because of the lack of weather and the feel of driving on rails. I think the AI in F1RS is great. I have never had this problem you describe. Maybe with the 3D sound I know where the other cars are and don't make stupid mistakes? I refused to move up from 1.05 because all the other patches before 1.09 had a horrible framerate. physics The only problem with the sound IMHO is the highspeed downshift. There are replacement wave files on www.f1racingsim.com. I was re-energized about the game after I found all the addons for the game at that site. There is a 98 carset, and replacement skylines for canada and Melbourne and others. This along with an editor for just about everything you would want to do with F1RS. a The AI in GP2 could have been used for Nascar 2 :-) I disagree. Is F1RS perfect? Nope, and I never said it was. < Snip > Some people like F1RS, some don't. For me, F1RS is the first racing sim I can drive like a car. I love that delicious feeling of*** the car on the edge of adhesion. I think that in GP2, the cars are either on rails, or backward on the track. Some feel that this is the way it would be. Drivers are quoted as saying that the transition between traction and loss of control is very fast. GP2 models a faster transition than F1RS, but there are many things that go into a physics model, and I'm not sure, on balance, that GP2 has them better than F1RS. I haven't heard Michael Schumacher post his opinion. So I'm enjoying F1RS, which feels VERY right, based on my experience with sports and sporty cars I drive on roads, I loved GP2, which is as much like my car as a Starwars Tie Fighter. It has been retired. I don't accuse those who disagree with me of being ass kissers, I mean "arse" kissers. How do you pronounce that anyway? If you prefer GP2, drive it. I'll give each new F1 sim a fair shot. I'd love to see Starting Grid. I'll drop them a line someday, see what's up. Larry

Your opinion about F1RS is not holy. Everyone interested in F1 simracing knows you bash F1RS only because of the sake of it, because you are a GP2 fanatic and think it is the real thing. You are playing a different game than I am, you are probably talking about Psygnosis' F1 there. On my F1RS (playing expert mode) the computer drivers don't hit me unless it is quite inevitable, like I am sideways in a tight corner and they don't see me from a distance. Like it has been said earlier in this forum already, one example of how great the F1RS AI is that this is the only sim I've seen where the computer drivers will go reverse and pass you from the other side if you block their way completely. In all the others they either just sit there forever, or drive through you. GP2 is unplayable with any hardware, unless you play it in VGA resolutions. And Microprose never fixed its lack of variable weather, stupid AI, scripted spinouts and the unrealistic 'on-the-rails' feeling in driving.

As far as graphics goes, surely there is no comparison, GP2 looks like a relic from a past age. Be honest now, do you really think GP2 has better graphics??? A graphics card is a requirement of most modern worthwhile games - I don't see it as a problem that F1RS requires one. PJ

I haven't played GP2 in about 4 months and I don't intend to start again soon. I'm no big GP2 fan, in fact when F1RS came out I tried to defend it against the GP2-lovers. So I'm not an 'arse'. Maybe you're playing a different version of F1RS to me, or maybe you're just talking out your ringer. Ask most of the simracing experts and they'll tell you F1RS AI is dangerously slow at certain parts, and they WILL drive into you, particularly at the start of a race. Too bad. As I say, I haven't played GP2 in a long while so it makes no difference to me. -- Spudgun
Spudgu 16 Jul 1998#414121
Well I won't tell you whether an F1 car should or should not feel like a road car, because I don't know. I must admit, driving on the edge in F1RS can be fun, where in GP2 sometimes you'd spin where on the previous lap, doing the same thing, you would not. All this is true. It'd be nice to have an F1 sim with a physics model as advanced as GPL's. Like 'arss'. :) Starting Grid came out ages ago and apparently it's not much cop. At least both F1RS and GP2 have their fans, Starting Grid does not. -- Spudgun

I would consider a lot of what the AI do to be "realistic". Maybe not in character, but at least likely. However I think I know what everyone is referring to. The best way to demonstrate it is to put A tires on, or jump in a Sauber and start a race at Hockenheim. At any point you wish, try entering turn 1 with an equal or faster AI car up to 2 seconds behind you. No matter what, they will smash you out because there entry speed does not alter, regardless of traffic. I've tried a gazillion lines and nothing is a sure bet in there. It's either drive an equal car and setup or face a high possibility of getting knocked out of the race. I don't think that's much fun at all. -- mark "If you get to the point where you truly understand what the term 'controlled looseness' means, then, and only then, do you know what the term 'fast' means." It's not the quality of the sound I dont like, it's how the sound is connected to the physics. The quality you get used to. I remember I didn't like how the engine sound followed the gas pedal exactly, from zero gas to full there was no delay whatsoever, making it impossible to rev the engine in neutral so it sounded just as a real F1 car. knitpicking, I know, but still :o). I haven't tried N2, so I have no clue on what you mean here. I suspect it's not a compliment on the GP2 AI, though :o). I have little experience with the AI in F1RS, but what I experienced I didn't like. The way they drive straight in to you in the first corner after start is as if they dont see you at all and still I'm very close to the AI in front of me going into the corner. It looks real strange in the replay. Then when coming up to lap an AI they dont behave very realistic either. I have lapped a lot of AI in F1RS at expert mode and it's very seldom they just let you pass. They race you as if it was for position. Once I realized this I passed them as if I was racing for position too. This is not a correct simulation of a real F1 race, IMO. I onced trailed an AI very close for several laps without it ever going out of the racing line to let me by. So I guess all I can say is that into the first corner and lapping the AI in GP2 gets my vote. When lapping the AIs in GP2, they most of the time see you and leave the racing line, but sometimes they dont, and that feels very realistic. So you're saying that F1RS wins in graphics, physics _and_ AI? Or do you judge a racing sim from other parameters than I do? Another thing I didn't like about F1RS is that it hadn't kerbs on critical sections of the track as the real tracks has. For example Melbourne, the fast right hander before the first intemidiate - kerbs on the real track, no kerbs in F1RS -, Interlagos, fast left hander before the second intemidiate, or the fast right hander after the first intemidiate (cant remember which now) - kerbs on the real track, no kerbs in F1RS. These are very critical corners on both tracks and when you went through them a little to fast you hit the glue grass instead of kerbs. /Christer
Then it's realistic too often :o). /Christer

You can revv the engine much better if you set the gas pedal sensitivity to around 90--100%. The default settings will do just that, rev the engine from 0-17000 in about 0.1 seconds. E veryone knows it's mostly legal - except in the monsoon season. Are you French, or something? :-) Paul > We have monsoons here too. But I would never pay Lee Galles for an > estuary. > -- > mark
I have it around 90-100%, and it revs from 0-17000 as fast as I can press the accelerator? /Christer -- http://home4.swipnet.se/~w-41236/ (Read all about the "Global online racing"-proposal under "For developers". I really think you're confusing the two of them here :o). Many have complained the last two years about the AI in GP2 giving up the corners to easy. They will even leave the racing line if you only have your front wheels just in front of their rear wheels. This is of course at ace level, I have no idea how they behave at other levels. I guess if you enter the first corner last you will never have this problem ;o). /Christer (800+ hours in GP2 (Ace) and 100+ hours in F1RS (Expert) )
Oh yeah, those long tracks will be unimaginably awesome :o))). /Christer -- http://home4.swipnet.se/~w-41236/ (Read all about the "Global online racing"-proposal under "For developers".
