First impressions of Burnout drag racing

Buyers of Bethesda's Burnout discussed its lack of a dashboard view, system requirements and stability under Windows 95. Bethesda's Brent Erickson and Todd Howard answered questions about AI tyre slip, burnouts and heads-up racing classes, and players compared quarter-mile times. Others said they would wait for Tantrum's NHRA Drag Racing.

Just got my copy at EB $39.95, and I love it. But it dosn't have a dash view. But I can live with it till NHRA comes out. ?????.....Miket.....?????
Hi, The one thing I liked about the X-Car demo was it ran quite nicely and my lowly P120, (I've made it my resolution to defently upgrade over the summer!) how does Burnout run on lower end systems? How is the physics and AI? I've never tried a drag racing sim before, it would defently be something different! Later, John

From the bottom of the Burnout box: OS: Microsoft DOS 5.0 or greater CPU: Pentium 75mhz minimum VIDEO CARD: 256-color SVGA, VESA 2.0 Compliant, 3dfx recommended (I can't stress this recommendation enough... ;) CD-ROM: Double speed Memory: 16MB minimum HD Space: 70MB etc... It can run on an older system in DOS and probably run quite well. It's not like drag racing puts an extreme amount of strain on a CPU, unlike N2 or other sims. But, no matter what computer you have, I can't stress enough the need for a 3dfx card...the graphics are awesome, especially the smoke...the burnouts look almost real to me, especially from the track side camera, and believe me, I saw plenty of burnouts today at the Pennzoil Nationals. The physics and AI seem pretty realistic to me, but then I've never drag raced in a 7-second car before, so I can't tell you for certain. The AI is fairly tough to beat at the higher levels, although I am usually able to beat them on a holeshot. Be warned there is a steep learning curve in figuring out how to set up the car, but they do include some setups made by the programmers and they help a lot in setting up your own car. Kevin
Wenmi 22 Mar 1998#400819
I have a P133 in my computer and it runs fine. I don't have a 3Dfx card so I can't say anything about that. But the AI and physics are good, plus it helps to know what works good in a racing motor. ?????.....Miket.....?????
The game runs pretty good on older systems. There are only 2 cars racing at a time, so it's not processor intensive. It's a DOS game; has a *** tendency to crash in WIN95. A 3Dfx card is a great idea, since the burnout involve a lot of smoke... With that kind of card, you get lovely transparent smoke effects. Be warned: the car is not easy to setup. There's a lot a tweaking that can be done but if you don't know all the lingo, you can't do much. The manual doesn't help that much either. You can still win races in handicap racing... without playing too much with setups. There's no in car view :( Sound and control are better than in X-car. A good game, but I won't put Nascar 2 on the side just yet... Maybe Tantrum Entertainment's NHRA Drag Racing is going to be better. Philippe Sergerie

>>setups. There's no in car view :( Sound and control are better than in >What the hell do you mean not incar view? Is that a troll or something? I think he meant - there is NO DASHBOARD view which immediately turns this loser into an arcade game rather than a sim. This one went right back to the store. Wish I had returned X-car within my 10 days - I'm stuck with that one but I know now to never buy another Bethesda racing title ever again!

Have been playing Burnout for a couple days now. Easy install. Appears to run in a DOS window. Manual is skimpy, but provides enough information to get into the game. I have a rendition card, so have to run the game in un-accellerated mode. Requires a Voodoo based card for 3D. Frame rate is acceptable (to me) on my 133w/48megs. No***pit view, but roof view (ala N2) is okay. If you are a drag-racing fan, the action should be quite acceptable with burnouts (natch), wheelies, dry hops, handling problems etc. Car models are okay, nothing exceptional, and some have rather cheesy graphics. Would like to see them in 3D mode, however, to get better impression. Sound is the same for all cars and motor types, but is fine and sounds like what I would expect a carburated car to sound like. Racing action is great with variable opponent difficulty levels. Tweaking the car is fun (if you're into that sort of thing) to try to get it to "run a number" consistently. Had no problem setting up my wheel and pedals for use (probably because of DOS base-unless I'm wrong on that point). Never have gotten them to work together in W95. Biggest problem so far is getting kicked out to the desktop on a sometimes frequent basis. If you like drag racing, and games like Street Rods 1 and 2, you will enjoy this game. If you have only a casual interest in Drag Racing, you probably won't be able to overlook some of its shortcomings. BTW, I felt before trying it that the lack of in-car would be a major turn-off. In practice it isn't. On most runs I'm so busy getting the car down the track that the view doesn't matter. Would be happy to address any specific comments. Regards, Tom Petersen --

>Had no problem setting up my wheel and pedals for use (probably because of >DOS base-unless I'm wrong on that point). Never have gotten them to work >together in W95. Biggest problem so far is getting kicked out to the The trick is to make sure your wheel & pedals are on joystick #1. If you have an older T2, they default to the wheel on X-axis joystick #1 and the pedals are the Y-axis of joystick #2. If you do have an older T2, you should try the adapter which should come with the unit to put both axis on joystick #1. Also your driving unit should be on ID#1 in the joystick applet in the W95 control panel. Infact W95 will only recognize the device installed on ID#1 for W95 games. So this means you have to add/remove devices as appropriate if you also have a joystick. What era of drag racing is this? I want to kick John Forces *** a little bit :-) -- Header intentionally scrambled to ward off the spamming hordes.

A little too much caffeine in your daily regimen, Cisko? If the developers of the game say there's no***pit view, Bethsoft's screen shots and descriptions make it clear there's no***pit view, and several people who've bought and played the sim say there's no***pit view, then I would have to hazard a guess that there's no***pit view. Cisko: Maybe *this* is a troll: Subject: Burnout In-Car View and Lockups Date: Sun, 22 Mar 1998 23:42:31 -0800 From: Organization: gte.net Newsgroups: rec.autos.simulators I have read many post complaining about no***pit view, we (playtesters) asked Bethesda to put this in but I guess they didn't think it was necessary, plus from testing the game I think it would be kind of hard to see the sides of your hood to make sure you don't cross the center line or hit the wall on a run.In other words so you could see where the front of your car is at all times, because of the lack of a ***pit view doesn't make this a arcade game, plenty of people use arcade view in N2 when racing so they can see their whole car.I read one message that one guy took the game back or decide not buy it because of the lack of a***pit view,to me that is plain stupid, the view you use doesn't make the game good or bad... <big snip> Get the picture, pal? <snip> It's bracket racing. The body you choose for your car has nothing to do with its performance as far as I can tell. The rail cars turn over on their sides easily, but that's about the only diff I can tell a body makes. This is after 3 or 4 hours of playing. The fastest car I've made ran a 6.2?? at about 203 mph. I modified one of the included set ups to run this. Since it's bracket racing, you can be competitive with any speed car. There are old body's and some new ones, like a '95 corvette. What would help this game a bunch is a***pit view and a graphics editor. Everytime someone releases a racing game without a***pit view they get slammed, yet companies still do it. Pretty lame IMO. -- Note my real email address is day AT net-connect.net

Lemme clear this up. The body does make a difference in that what works for one body isn't going to work for another. But you can still make any of the cars fast .. at least any of them I've played with so far. The AI cars won't crash unless you hit them. The AI cars will slip the tires. They feather the throttle pretty quickly but they do lose the time. The ability level will affect how often and how much it infuences the run. -Brent

You CAN adjust the dash to your liking (move the dials, etc) and place the camera up-front, and it DOES have TP and FC. Give it a try! I don't know a lot about drag racing and I had a great time in a 16 player game of it. I DQ'd myself (shit...revenge), but it was still a blast.

Absolutely! Not doing a proper burnout can add hundreths to your time. The key is warming them up the right amount. It takes a bit of practice to get it right. With high torque cars (that will push through a static burnout, you have to do a rolling burn and then back up and do another if you want (you can also burn in reverse I suppose). Greg, do you have "Burnout"? I dont because of the no***pit thing but I do know that in Tantrums "NHRA Drag Racing" that the rear tire distort as in real life and even the traction of each rear tire is modeled seperately. If you dont back up correctly after the burnout then you'll lose it coming off the line. There is even a "driver cam" replay where you can watch yourself trying to control the car, ought to be funny the first time we try a full pass mode run in a flopper<g>! Even engine blowups and fires are modeled, should be fun trying to stop a ball of flame from 200+ mph :)! Trev

Greg, You're not limited to "bracket racing". Burnout has a Heads-up class which is the fastest car wins, no bracket (with the usual DQ's of course). As far as your second concern goes, let me just say we are working on it :) Burnout also models the traction on all four tires which changes due to suspension, body setup, aerodynamics, temperature, track conditions, groove location, and many others. The tire model itself is customizable. You can change the tires peak, the shape of the "curve" along with the usual value like pressure and camber (you can adjust lateral and longitudinal curves seperately). It's very interesting to play around with. Oh, and yes the tire does distort and grow both in the math and visually. -Brent

Brent, to tired to run it tonight but, I finally read the manual! And it got me thinking about a couple of things I missed. 4's and 300 will be possible. The key to running the big numbers and being consistent aren't the obvious things. As far as the ***ing about***pit or no ***pit I've been enjoying it too much to care at this point. I would rather tweak and find out what really makes a car work then seeing a cheesy looking dash. Everyone ***ed about N2's***pit being horrible, but its closer to realistic than not and it still is aggravating for me. By the way Burnout Pro and Desk Top Dyno might be next on my list. I'll buy the NHRA sanctioned one as well but if they treat us sim. drivers the way they treat real life drivers it could be a rip off! Regards Pete
