N2 3Dfx patch: 'Beta' means 'Finished'!!!

24 posts by 12 people · 19 Mar 1998 - 24 Mar 1998

Whether the NASCAR 2 3Dfx beta will ever be finalised

A poster argued the NASCAR Racing 2 3Dfx 'beta' was effectively final and that users should be grateful for a free patch. Greg Cisko and others still criticised its cockpit lines with anti-aliasing and lack of frame rate gains, while John Wallace noted it showed Papyrus's commitment to Glide for future titles.

hardware: PC/graphicsNASCAR Racing 2

Automated summary.

A lot of people are talking about (a lot of) changes they'd like to see in the final release of the Nascar 2 patch. Well, wake up! There won't be a 'final' patch! All of the 3Dfx patches for non-3Dfx games I know, are called beta and are not supported! You see, the companies give us these patches as a free service. As soon as they call a patch official and final, people may turn to them for silly questions like: 'The patch doesn't work alright' or 'I don't like those strange lines across my screen'. And they don't want that to happen! So if I were you I wouldn't count on any patch updates. Certainly not considering the time it took to get this Nascar 2 patch on the Net! If they want to fullfill all the wishes you people have been asking for in this newsgroup, it would take another year to get the update ready! And by that time Nascar 3 will be already out... (I hope...) Time will tell if I'm right. And until then I'm quit happy with this patch. Sorry if I spoiled your happy dreams... Jeroen van Engelenhoven

So very true, people should just be happy that it (3dfx patch) came out at all. And to all the people that complain about it, that its not good enough: did they have to pay for it? NO It was free and Sierra did not have to spend the time to make this for us. If any one doesnt like it, they should just go back to the way they were playing N2 before the patch came out. SS

This I hear again and again: It's free, so shut up! Why the hell are you not allowed to discuss the quality of something that is free? BTW, I think the beta is already on par with the Rendition version, except for the***pit mess when using AA. l8er ronny -- |\ _,,,---,,_ I want to die like my Grandfather, ZZZzz /,`.-'`' -. ;-;;,_ in his sleep. |,4- ) )-,_. ,\ ( `'-' Not like the people in his car, '---''(_/--' `-'\_) screaming their heads off!

Are you for real? I don't think those two lines are affecting your gameplay, just something for you ***ers to cry about. Go ask your mommy for some more cheesy poofs!

May not be good enough for some of you, but Sierra is not asking you to pay for it anyways. Is this true?....I have heard that the 2 lines only appear in win95, they go away if you play in Dos. Any one have an answer for this? Also.. I have heard that you cannot use any other calender files but the one on the cd. is this true? SS
Greg Cisko 19 Mar 1998#400373
I am playing the game in DOS and the 2 lines are there if anti-aliasing is set to =2. There is only one line if you set the AA=1. The only way the lines go away is to disable AA. -- Header address intentionally scrambled to ward off the spamming hordes. >>Well in all fairness I would gladly pay for a patch which was worth >>a shit. I own a rendition card & DEMAND A PATCH TO ADD A SWITCH TO USE AA like 3dfx gets to use !!!!!!!!!! Do you consider that WHINNING STEVE ? I want it for free too !!!

IMHO I really don't need or really want the 3dfx patch. It doesn't change the physics or the racing, it just creates more eye candy.
Steve 19 Mar 1998#400380
Ive read in here that one person was saying that he has gotten better lap times already cause the game is that much more realistic. Wonder if that one person was the only one that this has happened to? I cant wait to try it out myself, but my good old Orchid I bought didnt work so I sent it back and Orchid is supposed to be sending me a new one. It has been over 2 months already...... The screen shots Ive seen look awesome though. SS >IMHO I really don't need or really want the 3dfx patch. It doesn't >change the physics or the racing, it just creates more eye candy.

>IMHO I really don't need or really want the 3dfx patch. It doesn't >change the physics or the racing, it just creates more eye candy. I wouldn't jump off the deep end here. About all you get is less jaggies and the same (or worse) framerate. The stands are faded, no lens flaring, 2 bogus lines in the incar view. Eyecandy? No way. The tire & engine smoke is a total freaking joke. It should be wispy & billow and be transparent. It isn't. It looks much llike the original game. I think they took the 3D features they had in the rendition version and ported it to 3dfx. Nothing was added at all form what I can tell. Also the Indycar rendition version completely blows away the N2 rendition version by every account I have seen. If either of those were done properly in Glide, it would blow away the rendition version. IMHO :-) -- Header address intentionally scrambled to ward off the spamming hordes.

Given that someone was mad enough to decide on that course of action, what do you think are the benefits for Papyrus or their customers? None whatosever. By the time you rewrite it for 3dFX no-one will give a ***about N2, N3 being the sim of choice for NASCAR fans. Dedicating time to a "perfect" implementation of 3dFX support would serve only to delay future products, and is why I've argued against having ANY kind of 3dFX support in NASCAR2, never mind a time-guzzling, picture-perfect Glide version. 3dFX support in N2 was demanded and supplied, and you can be sure it was to the best it could possibly be done given time and resource constraints. Cheers! John

Just because I am rather negative on this 3dfx patch, I fully do expect N3 to have full native Glide support. In short I completely agree with every point you made. I'll most likely be purchasing N3 too so there :-) -- Header address intentionally scrambled to ward off the spamming hordes. >On Thu, 19 Mar 1998 23:09:26 -0600, "Greg Cisko" >>If either of those were done properly in Glide, it would blow away >>the rendition version. >>IMHO :-) >Just one somewhat critical point missed - a Glide version may indeed >be better, but how long do you think it would take to re-write the >whole N2 graphics architecture to properly support and implement it? >Given that someone was mad enough to decide on that course of action, >what do you think are the benefits for Papyrus or their customers? >None whatosever. >By the time you rewrite it for 3dFX no-one will give a ***about N2, >N3 being the sim of choice for NASCAR fans. I do not have the lines..I just installed the patch and ran N2. I didn't add anything to my autoexec.bat file. Is AA on by default?

You could always buy GPL as well just to get a taste of what N3 will be like.... :-) Cheers! John
