Which IHO is the best Sim?

Flame warWhich is the best racing sim? NR2003 vs NASCAR Thunder 2004

A newcomer asked which sim was best, and Slug named F1 Challenge, NR2003 and GPL but said he personally preferred NASCAR Thunder 2004. Others called Thunder an arcade game and cited real NASCAR drivers such as Dale Earnhardt Jr and Martin Truex Jr using NR2003. The debate turned into a lengthy, abusive exchange between Slug, Rusty Unger and others.

Nascar Thunder 2004 is not a bad arcade game. It's pretty good for just wanting a quick race, without having to worry much about setup etc. It's good to just relieve frustration after a long day, and wreck some cars. My preference though is NR2003, although I am hooked to GPL and F1C at the moment. LOL.

Yeah, NT2004 feels better to me too but I acknowledge that NR2003 is the better all round game

If you're going to get a copy of Thunder then you might as well pick up a copy of Cart Precision Racing to go with it.

I was partly joking :P Although GP4 does have some good points such as AI and faithful tracks it is poor in other areas - physics, multi etc, but you can have some enjoyable racing with it when it is correctly setup. I recently tried F1C but found it unplayable due to enormous steering lag - you know I turn my wheel and a few seconds later the onscreen wheel turns. Seriously, I rate Papyrus's Nascar Racing 2003 Season as the best sim.

What my point was in calling it an arcade game, is that is the audience that it was targetted for. The difference is that with setup in NT2004, yes you can feel some difference between them, but it is not as realistic as a true sim oriented game like NR2003. There is nothing wrong with NT2004, I like the game, but it is geared more to an arcade type audience, because the younger generation nowadays want something to pop in and play right off, they don't want something that they have to take the time to master as much as NR2003 or GPL. NT2004 isn't a bad game, and me calling it an "arcade" game didn't mean it's a bad game. I play the game, and yes it is truly an "arcade" style of game, not a sim.

OK, are you talking about the PC version or the console version? You do know that the PC version is developed by the ISI who did the F1 series for EA and the console version is developed by Tiburion, right? I admit that NT2004 has some elements to make things easier, such as the icon to follow the pace car, auto pitting etc. but they are all optional. I don't know much about the setups as I'm a driver and not a mechanic and prefer to download setups or use the ones the game comes with. I like the carreer mode of NT2004 too. Only thing missing for me is the save option during a race, which NR2003 doesn't have either. The actual driving experience feels as much to me a sim as NR2003 though. But then I've never drivin the real thing so it comes back to my original comment that it is a matter of taste. And I'll leave it at that.

If NR2003 wasn't fun, why would they be driving it whenever they can online during the week? Many of them pass entire nights racing online. Sorry, just admit that they know more then you (and me). NT2004's physics, FF engine etc. certainly feels much more complex and involving to drive than N2003's but that's where it ends. N2003 while not quite as advanced under the hood is -far- more polished and delivers a much more convincing and enjoyable all-round nascar experience.

Just to be a name dropper...on Thursday night's WindTunnel on Speed, they had Martin Truex Jr on the show. He runs Dale Earnhardt Jr's car in the Busch series. (#8) And he answered an email question saying both he and Dale Jr use the Papyrus, Sierra product Nascar Racing 2003 Season. According to him, it was the best one out there. So no internet rumours, no haphazard guessing. Nr2k3 was the choice. Of course what he didn't say was. that tg was the devil...eh WHAT? wrong topic!! I am talking about the PC version. I don't care who it is developed by or anything. The game is not a sim. It's that simple. I drive Late Model Stock at my local short track, and sorry to dissapoint you, but NT2004 not even close to physics, the physics of NT2004 are easy to drive, thus an arcade game, not a realistic sim. If you want realistic racing, you choose NR2003. 99% Of the people on this board will agree. I don't give a shit about a career mode...I don't like that. I wan't to race with my own designed setup, not one I downloaded off the internet, and frankly, the only time it is realistic is with NR2003. NT2004 is not a sim, and was never designed to be, if it was, why was it released on console? Because it is an arcade game, very simple, but hard for some to grasp.

I've got to find time to dig into gp4 more. Certainly the steering is highly configurable so perhaps I can find info about setting up a logitech FF wheel. Driving the CART mod felt very strange...of course a-lot of that might have been my unfamiliarity<sp?> with GP4. The cars looked great..but I don't have enough time to find out if it's gp4 or the mod that is wonky. dave henrie

My take on GP4: - Great graphics. - Decent physics (not great, but I'm more convinced by the low-speed and lateral grip and the way the car deals with off track excursions and car-to-car collisions and so forth than the ISI F1 series, which I view as generally superior in other respects) - The best tracks in any F1 sim - The most horribly antiquated game engine ever (Processor Occupancy? Puhleaze...) - I guess this is a symptom of the last point, but the most horrible controller configuration ever seen in a racing title. I've had the sim since it came out and I'm still not 100% confident I have my wheel setup correctly. Scarily, I've seen photos of F1 drivers using it to practice (including Burti in a Ferrari sim-cockpit in the garage at Fiorano). Jason

"Dash Ryp Rock" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > IHO, which is the best sim around. meaning which one is the easiest to > use that gives you the most entertainment? > TIA There is no best. Several current and not so current sims have their merits. Currently I have three on my computer: Papyrus's Nascar 2003: hands down the best driving feel for me. I can really tell what the car is doing and even if I were to stick with the lumbering Nascar stockers, it's still great fun to throw them around the road courses. It's GPL, but with grip... and I have a weird timing bug on my notebook which prevents me getting GPL to run properly without going into slow motion. Live for Speed: great value for the buck. The tracks, while not real-world, are really nice looking, and there is an interesting assortment of FWD, RWD and AWD cars. The physics model rates up there with the Papyrus model in terms of the feedback coming through the controller. The only thing that spoils it for me is the frame rate dip with lots of cars on the screen. Rally Trophy: a bit of an oddball which not many consider a true sim, but I love exactly the cars modelled here (Lancia Fulvia etc.), I like my rally action to take place at a bit less than warp speed, the physics model is acceptable, the graphics are (I think) great and it's just a lot of fun. If you want "easy to use" and "entertaining", I don't think you could go wrong scouring the bargain bins for this one, add some new cars, patch it and go driving. After a long pause I reloaded it on the weekend and blew away 4 hours and was grinning the whole time. Stephen

I did two things that made GP4 infinitely more playable for me: 1) Tweaked the f1graphics.cfg file. Told GP4 to ignore its internal graphics config (which I think is controlled by the first line in the .cfg file) and to turn on hardware T/L (towards the top of the file...can't remember the exact line, but it's easy to find). Also turned off the video walls. Wow....much better frame rate! 2) Turn off all steering help. Makes the FF much better. Still not as good as F1C for me, but night and day difference in game play. Now I can actually get a rhythm going on a track like Imola. I also use GPxPatch and GP4Tweaker to turn off that stupid black flag rule! http://gp4tweaker.vadertrophy.com/cms/ Haven't played the new release of the CART mod. I downloaded and installed, but was had some trouble with the tracks. I intend to get back to it "when I have some time". (HAH!)

For me, that honor would go to M-B Truck Racing. I never *was* able to get that game to work with my wheel and pedal set. No biggy, we'll see if they eventually come around to EA/ISI Nascar series like they did with their F1 series. I predict they will but it will take a few refinements from ISI, just like the F1 series did. Ymenard will hate it no matter what they do so we can ignore his opinion off the bat. ;-)

N2003's physics aren't that difficult to drive IMO. On many tracks, it's easy as hell to drive. Dale Earnhardt J. said on his web site that the truck physics in N2003 were more like what the Cup cars feel like, so I'm not sure how realistic Cup racing is in N2003. There is a big difference in how those two series feel in the game. David G Fisher

Is the career mode in NT2004 that bad? I picked up a copy for $20, but I haven't had time to install it yet. It's worse than NT2003/2004 for the xbox/ps2, and those don't really redefine depth in management simulations. Simplicity aside, the play balancing is ridiculous in career mode. I can't help but think no one tested the game at any point during its development. Jason

In your message subject, you did ask for opinions on the best *sim* didn't you? Some like to play *sims*, while others prefer to play *games*. There is a difference.

Too true David > BTW, I saw what you said about me over at rasf1 a few weeks ago. :-o Well I can't explain Ralf's performances any other way, he is probably lurking here too :) rasf1 is a real "nomex" experience though isn't it? Cheers Tony

Hey slug, how does the kill file feel, Warm and Cozy, you've been proved wrong, lick your wounds and admit it. If you wan't to talk about what a great game NT2004 is, go to an arcade group, I don't have time for someone of your lack of intellectual abilities to post to me. You were caught lying, and then tried to make up another excuse, maybe you should run for president.

Yea, you sound *real* intellectual Rusty. Racing gamers are fairly low on the intellectualism scale of game genres so STFU you redneck dork.
