Can anyone out there suggest any 17" models which work well with N2003?
Since N2003 max resolution is 1024x768,
Would this be a problem with the LCD's higher native resolution?
TIA.
Choosing an LCD monitor for NR2003
Gordo asked for 17-inch LCD recommendations and whether NR2003's resolution would be a problem. Replies explained that NR2003 supports resolutions well above 1024x768 if the monitor driver allows it, and Steve Smith stressed running LCDs at their native resolution. Models from Dell, ViewSonic, Samsung and Planar were recommended, with mixed reports on gaming response times.

Here is the one that I use. Best bang for the buck. Some of
the newer 12ms refresh monitors don't deliver as promised.

I have a GF4 Ti4400 graphics card with both DVI and VGA output.
Which output gives better performance for N2003 graphics?

This also happens to be my max. desktop resolution in Windows.
Does it somehow auto-detect higher resolutions when they become available?
Yes, N2k3 will go up to at least 1600x1200, maybe higher, not sure, but I
know it is at least that.

You can, as far as I remember, get higher resolutions than 1024x768 in
N2003. But yes, the monitor has to be capable of higher resolutions, in
order for you to play N2003 in 1280x1024, for example. Whatever Windows is
able to do, those resolutions will show up-- to a certain extent-- in N2003.
Funny thing with my FPD1830 (Gateway), after installing nVidia's 56.72
drivers (I have a GeForce Ti4200), my monitor goes from 1024x768 straight up
to 1280x1024, without going to 1154x854, which I could get before I
installed the 56.72s. When I go back to earlier drivers, that middle
resolution appears again. I was told that if I reinstalled my monitor
drivers, 1154x854 would again become available, but that hasn't worked with
me. I like 1154x854 on my desktop because it is not too big nor too small.
As it stands, I have resorted to 1024x768, which I've been able to live
with.
Sorry for the digression.... :)

You are limited by the monitor driver information file you are using.
NR2003 goes way beyond 1024x768.

Just bought myself an AG Neovo E series 19" (click http://www.neovouk.com).
It's absolutely brilliant in all but FPS games, when there is still a bit of
motion blur. CMR04 and TRD2 demo are fine. Very bright colours, nice
contrast and no dead pixels. You need to make sure you understand what
policy the manufacturer and supplier have in terms of acceptable dead pixel
count.

The key is not analog v. digital, it's staying w. the native resolution.
IOW, you have to match yer 'puta's capabilities w. the LCD: if yer machine
can only run 1024x768 w. a satisfactory fps, don't buy a 1280x1024 LCD and
run it at the lower rez; it will look horrible.

NR2003 can go up to 2048x1536x32, using my Viewsonic G220fb 20" monitor.

Maximum PC had what I thought was a specious reason for rejecting the
Viewsonic (which most other reviewers have liked): it didn't look good at
1280x1024. Well, DUH! Its native resolution is 1600x1200 (admitedly a
steep barrier for anything but high-end 'putas). MPC ought to know better.
LCDs only look good at their native rez - not higher and not lower.

(both 17 inchers), and the Dell 2001FP (20 in.). I bought a Dell 1800FP on
MPC's recomendation a year ago and it was just as good as they said it was

only prob with Dell's LCDs is that you can't examine them in the store

Which one did you try? I've got the 1800FP and have had no problems
whatsoever playing games when its configured correctly. I do have some
problems with games when framerates are low, but that isn't the lcd's
problem.
I've never played N2003 but here's some good general info on LCD
monitors and gaming:

(Sorry if it or something similar has already been posted)
I was ready to get a new Sony 19" LCD before I read this. I have a
GDM-F400 and am now in no rush to go to an LCD. The Sony I was looking
at has a response time of 25ms (15ms rise and 10ms decay).

The 2001FP has a 16ms response time, and has a native resolution of 1600x1200.
Gaming-wise it's flawless to my eyes, especially when coupled with a DVI
compatible graphics card. A little on the expensive side, but it's the best
bit of hardware I've bought for a long, long time.

I do have some >problems with games when framerates are low, but that isn't the lcd's >problem.I have a low end Dell 15" LCD monitor - think it is a FP15e or
something like that. I race ALL THE TIME with N2003 and I think the
monitor is fantastic. 1024x768 native resolution (which I use for all
gaming - GTA-VC, Max Payne 2, Nascar Racing 2003 Season, you name it
and it looks fantastic.
The nice thing about 15" LCD screens is that they acutally measure 15"
- so you are not losing much size over your typical 17" CRT - which
measures 16" on a good day! If you get a 19" LCD you will have the
same approximate viewing area as you would with a 20 or 21" CRT.
Whatever you hear about difficulties with LCD monitors and gaming does
not apply to the Dell unit that I have, and I was a skeptic before I
got it. The only reason I got the LCD in the first place is that Dell
was basically giving it away when I bought the PC last year. I had
actually planned on selling the LCD display and keeping my 17" CRT -
until I opened it and turned it on. I will never go back to a CRT
display again.
BTW - graphics card is TI4200 - I get about 50-60 fps average for
N2003 with textures on extreme and most eye candy turned on. Turned
off sun glare though, it was so blinding as to make online racing
difficult - so I turned it off to try to gain a slight edge. Hasn't
worked yet, though, only made 7-10 so far!

for one, will never buy another CRT again (not even for TV; I have switched
over to DLP projectors, which work great with DVI input, BTW; you ain't seen
nuthin' till you've flown a DC-3 over the Grand Canyon at 1240x768).
Sony is no longer on the cutting edge of anything. Various internal
struggles andoutside distractions have affected all their core businesses:
TVs, monitors, consoles, movies, music...only their digital camera division
is still strong, IMO. The hot brands in LCDs are Dell, Samsung (which badly
wants to be Asia's new Sony), Viewsonic, and Planar.

Agreed, and I *think* NR2003 pulls its maximum rez and color depth offergins
based on the DX feedback from your video card, where it reports all its
supported rez and depths back to the sim and thus the sim only offers what
your card has reported as being available/compatible. That's a SWAG, but I
think it's close to being right.
Steve:
I've seen some nice Dell and Viewsonic LCD models. I'll keep an eye on
them and their respective response times. One day I will get one.

The hot brands in LCDs are Dell, Samsung (which badly > wants to be Asia's new Sony), Viewsonic, and Planar. In case anyone is unaware Dell is giving away 15" and 17" LCD's with certain
systems for another couple days.

thru normal retail channels.) If you've bought from Dell before, call yer
salesman and ask him to alert you for these special deals.

Steve Smith is correct: LCD monitors are only acceptable at their native
resolution. If you are like me and want to do racing sims at a higher
resolution than your "normal" desktop, then forget LCD.

Somehow my current nvidia drivers don't list anything higher than 1024x768 in graphics properties.
I'm sure my GF4 Ti4400 could easily handle higher res. than that.

Not if you want a decent framerate.

Sounds like you may have a *monitor* driver installed that tells Windows
that your max resolution is 1024x768 ?
Beers and cheers
