F1RS is Awful!!

Claim that F1RS is awful, based on the demo

A poster called F1 Racing Simulation awful compared with GP2, then admitted he had only played the demo. Fans told him the full game and setups were very different, while John Wallace argued demos should represent the product. Some agreed GP2 felt more like a real car.

Oh Yeah, LOOKS GREAT!! Sounds terrible and the car feels like it is a 15 tonne lorry!! GP2 anyday. Anyone actually got the cars to handle like GP2??? Can you turn traction control OFF!!!! MDWS

Yea your right it SUCKS...dont buy it.....at least YOU dont buy it.....that way we wont have to hear you crying. For the rest buy it now. Then spend hours tweaking setups and enjoy the best feeling of driving in a PC sim.... Damn I love this sim...its getting almost like Flanker for me and for those who know that is saying an awful lot......its my highest recommendation. You've posted contrary to the Group collective; prepare to be assimilated! FWIW (and this goes for CPR, as well), grab a few good setups off the net (or spend some time tweaking it yourself); it makes a WORLD of difference! In regards to traction control, set it to "expert" and max everything out (RTFM for specifics). Insofar as GP2 is concerned, forget what you know (unless you've actually driven an F1 car); it's NOT GP2! Ubisoft modeled their sim after F1 racing (presumably), not Microprose's interpretation of F1 racing. Sean
Well, looks better than a smack in the face with a steel pole; s'allright, you know. Calm down, calm down. You can turn traction control off, of course you can. Can you make it handle like GP2, well first learn to drive it, then, well you may not want to; after all if you really want GP2 there is nothing to stop you having it for real - fire that little sucker up and go for a spin. -- Suck The Goat

Yea, RTFM, no worries. Or did I burn it??? Hmm.... Insofar as GP2 is concerned, forget what you know HOLD ON!! STOP RIGHT THERE DUDE! I've driven some very quick cars on the track, not F1, but with only 200bhp less than F1 - ok, quite a bit heavier - BUT THEY FEEL MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH MORE LIKE GP2 THAN F1RS. Also I raced high performance karts - "Closest thing to F1 I've driven" - Johhny Herbet. Don't feel much like F1RS. With a wheel and pedals GP2 only lacks the realism of wind noise and G force!!!!!!!! Matt

The demo only? And you base your whole opinion on the DEMO? For gods sake....
Tony Rae 28 Jan 1998#394300
I'll admit I was very disappointed with the driving model of F1RS when I first got it. The main reason is that I was expecting it to drive something like GP2, which I spent a lot of time with. It was really, really easy to lose the car and spin off, even with the aids on. After lots of practice, setups from other people and some patience, there's no way I could go back to GP2. As of now it's the best racer I've ever come across, with a few minor irritations. Tony
Why on earth do you think any company would release a demo's? Could it be so that people can form an opinion of what the whole game will be like and make an informed buying decision? So will consumers expect the demo to be representative of the full product? Sheesh.... Cheers! John

>No way was it a pirate. It was the demo actually (he says sheepishly!). >Sorry!! So is that the only reason why your glad I don't like it!!!!!! Franklly yes. I don't have time to*** around with people who don't like the game. So if you wanted to sell it I was more than willing to help out. As it is since you have the demo, you cannot turn that stuff off. And the sound does suck as you say. The sound is *MUCH* better in the real game after you go to manual shifting. I hate the downshifting sound myself.

Really John did Ubisoft release a demo....or did a Pirate Demo get out on the net. Tell me did you see a difference in the official demo released much later and the demo currently availible at Avault... So do you think that the first demo was representative of the product...? Often I think it would be in the best interests of companies to NOT release demo's...as so many features have to be turned off that NO demo is a good representation of the product. The First Pirate Demo was even MORE unrepresentative of the product. PAPA DOC Pierre PAPA DOC Legrand Infamous Pink Flamingo Pilot...

The First Pirate Demo > was even MORE unrepresentative of the product. I agree in a lot of cases. Just as a funny aside, a company I used to work for released a demo, much to the consternation of those in development and support. Unfortunately, Marketing's idea of a "demo" was everyone else's idea of a very early, time-bombed beta. Another product they shipped with it was a virtually unuseable alpha. Finally, to shoot themselves square in the head, they charged $30.00 for this thing! <blam> Being the *** I am, I went online to hear some feedback...hehe. Suffice to say, the alpha and beta (which had already been superceded by vastly superior versions in-house) became THE demo online, representative of the final product, which no one intended to touch with a 10-foot pole. Three cheers for the marketing weasels! Oh well, something else to think about when you're playing demos. Sean

Which is far from the finished game. Even the English demo is different to the demo. Many demos are NOT the same as the finished product. If someone tried the Tomb Raider demo, and found the first level included easy, do they skip the game because the whole game will be that easy? If someone tries the F1RS demo, but cant drive Monza, what about the 15 other tracks, and 10 other cars they can drive instead?

>"It was the demo", he says. >Well, that just about says it all. >-- >Bruce. >(At home) Funny thing here people don't seem to think he can state an opinion because he only has a DEMO!, very strange indeed. I've got demos of programs and thank god I did and I've saved myself a fair bit of money by not buying there rubbish IMHO if they can't present a descent demo that will give an overall feel for the game don't release one. Ok I know they are not going to be totaly up to par but you can usualy get the feel if It's going to cut the mustard. Having said this I don't agree with his post below. As you now If demo is such as you can't adjust car setup then you can't make a fair assesment of it, so instead of saying it handles like a 15 tonne lorry! well I guess it would without the correct setup so it should'nt be put down for this. BTW I think F1rs is really a good game I did'nt get the demo I just came on over to RAS and had a lurk around the messages read between the lines of peoples comments then made a decision to go and buy, with no regrets :-)) Oh and yes I was am a great fan of Gp2, but at the moment concentrating on F1rs. Rgds Phil.
For what it's worth I'd agree (I don't drive, so I probably shouldn't have an opinion, but I've seen enough racing, driven enough sims, and been a passenger in enough crashing cars to know a bit about traction and response ;-) Andrew
If you place your judgement on the "demo" of a game then that's your affair. The ONLY "demos" that I have ever judged the quality of the full game on have been when the demo is a CUT from the actual release. Being a part of the entertainment software retail industry I'll give you a tip....completely free. Heed it or ignore it....whatever:- NEVER judge the finished product by a "demo" that is released BEFORE the retail version. NEVER! -- Bruce. (At home)

The 3 of you together know shit all. Simple as that. I've driven something with 200bhp less and (probably weighing twice as much) and with the weight more equally distibuted, but this doesn't feel like it or my car at home. ha. Loser Driven enough sims? yeah, and you're used to the crap. You can't drive for shit can you (rhetorical)

On Thu, 29 Jan 1998 23:54:09 +1100, Bruce Kennewell >NEVER judge the finished product by a "demo" that is released BEFORE the >retail version. NEVER! That may or may be the case, but not something I think I need worry about. If a company have a good product but release a demo which doesn't portray it accurately I see that as being their problem. They are, after all, the one ultimately missing the sales. The first F1RS demo should have never seen the light of day. I actually thought it quite good in terms of demonstrating the graphical quality, but the driving was awful. If, like me, other potential customers followed the newsgroups and found the reason for that and the fact that it would be fixed then that isn't a problem, but how many sim fans got it from a magazine coverdisk and made a buying decision there and then? Cheers! John
So _why_ then do companies release them as being representative of the finished product? Demos are advertising, plain and simple, and relatively cheap advertising at that. If they can't drive Monza it's because the _driving_ is bad, not because there is anything special about Monza in the demo. Why should you expect that to change in the finished product? The original F1RS demo was a mistake, and IMO should have been a "non-drivable" demo where you saw only the graphics. That would have allowed people to see the graphics without becoming disillusioned with the control. Cheers! John
Marc Johnso 29 Jan 1998#394491
With all this ***about the demo sucking and al I am begining to wonder if I am screwed up. That is what sold it for me. Even though I could keep up with the Ai at expert as soon as I knew that traction control etc where on I knew it would be a whole different ball game, and it is.

Of all the sims/demos I've played, ICR2's the only one I keep on the HD. GP2 is ok, but I never really liked the steering... felt as if it was on rails no matter how I tried to configure it. I had a friend's copy of F1rs for three days, and I tried very hard to get a steering configuration which felt natural. I failed. Tried a couple of joysticks, but I don't have a steering wheel (alien control device to me, remember) and I guess it's possible a wheel would get better response from Ubisoft's car. Bottom line for me (and I can only speak for myself) is that is I can't set up a responsive interface with the car, I can't enjoy the rest of the sim. And the rest of F1rs is, undoubtedly, superb. Andrew... a humble, know-nothing pedestrian

>Of all the sims/demos I've played, ICR2's the only one I keep on the HD. >GP2 is ok, but I never really liked the steering... felt as if it was on >rails no matter how I tried to configure it. That is how I felt about World Circuit and GP2 to a certain extent. I get the same response in F1RS as I did with GP2. In fact F1RS is *MUCH* easier for me to driver because of the greater (for me) situational awareness. I know exactly where I am with respect to the track. I can easily hit all the turns properly once I get used to them. This was not the case in GP2 as not being able to see the front tires make this harder for me apparently. Quite understandable. IMHO if you tried with a wheel you would be happy I should think. I guess I am surprised that the joystick response is so different for you in the 2 games. -- Header intentionally scrambled to ward off the spamming hordes.

I don't know about you, but Microsoft has started sending demo's of software that's an AVI file of the game. All I can say is that "I Will Not Buy A Program That Is Demo'ed With An AVI File. Period." That's not to say that they might not be nice, but, I'll be go-to-H*$# if I spend money on something that I can't get a PERFORMANCE evaluation of. Game developers send out demos so you can see how the thing performs on your machine and any normal human can understand that the software is crippled. I can determine a lot more from how fast a game runs than I can from how a video plays. Thanks anyhow. ---------------------------------------------------------- If it weren't for Lawyers, we wouldn't need em. And, did you know that, in the United States, they're Un-Constitutional!.
