I have seen a few NASCAR races on tv, and have also seen a couple of
cars live over here (the #88 car, and Allisons old #22 in a
hillclimb!!)and I think the in-car sound in the game does not justify
the car. Would it be possible to add a bit of gearbox/diff-whine? I`d
just love to have the gears screamin` at me....

Improving NASCAR 2's in-car engine sound
A user wanted more gearbox and differential whine in NASCAR 2's engine sound, and others offered to edit the WAV files. Posters identified ENGHI.WAV and ENGLO.WAV as the player's engine samples and pointed to The Pits' unpack/pack utilities. Jim Sokoloff explained that making a sample that pitch-shifts well without an audible loop point took a Papyrus engineer several weeks.

if you give me the recorded sound, I will gladly make it for you guys. I
do know how to edit n2 wav files. I've done it.
This would be a major improvement! Has anyone posted a patch with a new
engine sound? Might be a good project for our patron saints out here! If
you got a wave of an engine at any given RPM will it modulate with the
throttle? What would be the ideal RPM?....

Use those engine sound from the Super Touring Car Championship

I looked at both those places and couldn't find any new engine sounds.
Anyone else know where to find them?

(Nice job, they did, too). Lots of fun, and I can go into more detail if
anyone is interested.
Point I wanted to mention was that I got the opportunity to talk to Dan
(sorry I'm forgetting the last name, and I don't have my manual in front
of me to check) from Papy about the game in general. Since he did all of
the sounds in the game, I brought up the topic with him of replacing the
sounds ala the SoundKit for ICR2.
The game uses two sounds for the engine, presumably to eliminate that
annoying scratch-pop at high RPM from N1. So, to fully replace the
engine sound, you'll have to find which >>two<< files to replace in the
sound.dat file.
I'll poke around in it some this weekend and post anything I find.
Regards,
-Stuart Jones
There are indeed two files, enghi.wav and englo.wav. I assume these are
variablly mixed giving the effect of the differnet sounds at different
RPM's.

I am sure that the EngHi.wav file is running all the time, but
as you press the gas the pedal the Englo.wav is mixed in to
give more of a exhaust crack under greater throttle.
There is a separate file for the AI engine sound called
E1C11.WAV I think it is.

perfect from start to the end loop. I have very technaly advanced software

freuquency, I think, but never checked, but thanks for your comment.

P.S. I allready have made my own spotter and my beta 1 did go smothly.

Well....er....um........ I know a person who knows someone,,,who might
be able to put you back in touch with the person who,,,used to be the ex
wife of a man whose cousin,,,
Oh Heck, just email me,,,, ;) I've been playing with my spotter audio
lately,,,, not too concerned with the engine sound,,,,but did like a
throw in that is never heard in the game.... it says,,,, "hey...you just
drove yer ass off,,,,,,,,somebody go out there and pick it up",,,,,,"I
just threw that one in,,,,no charge..." LOL just the production guy
having a "secret laugh" by the way, Now mine says that every so often
when I win...

Better still, go the the PITS site and download the UNPACK.EXE
and PACK.EXE programs. These to utilities extract and repack
all the WAV sound files that are used in Nascar2. I think
there is 468 in total.
The ENGHI.WAV and ENGLO.WAV are the two used for the players
engine sound.
