Flame warPirated NASCAR 2 track upload condemned

Someone posted a file claimed to contain extra NASCAR 2 tracks. Most regulars condemned it as piracy that would harm Papyrus's licensing and the newsgroup's reputation, and Jan Kohl reported the poster to his ISP. A few young users defended it and responded with abuse.

SimRaci 13 Jun 1997#370439
While I haven't downloaded it, I recommend that you don't. Marc
I won't be checking to see if it is 'legitimate'. Please bear in my mind that if Sierra or Papyrus act they will probably also go for all those that work on utilities that convert or patch tracks. They may also decide to protect future product, either way it is unlikely that this charitable act is of benefit to this 'community'. BTW I hope the AI is sorted in this track. Dave.

You bonehead! Posting of these tracks IS illegal! Why? Because the tracks themselves are copyrighted Papyrus material. I wouldn't be suprised if someone from their legal department is taking action right now, based on the supposed upload of Australia. ***like this is what gave this group the 'black eye' it has now, and it will take a long, LONG time to repair the damage. Just ask Charlie Heath. He now stays away from this group, because he happens to work for Papyrus, and if it was known that he was associating with software pirates (in effect), he could lose his job, and possibly much worse. This is soooooooo much bullshit. If I worked for Papyrus I would track this guy to the ends of the earth and sue his ass off. What kind of way is that to treat the people who GAVE YOU THE DAMN GAME IN THE FIRST PLACE?!? Pardon me if I'm speaking out of turn, but most people come here to get information on sims - that isn't going to happen while warez and pirate stuff is being broadcast all over it. How would we go about getting this newsgroup moderated? Quite apart from cutting out all this piracy crap, it would help stop my other pet hate, which this guy also did for good measure. POSTING BINARIES TO THE DISCUSSION GROUP. Use the binaries group, that's why we've got it. Call it a threat, but if one more track hits this group you get several copies of a 100Mb windows swap file e-mail to you. It's not piracy if you create the tracks. There are several places which tell others what server you are using... and the fact that you are 10 years old doesn't get you off the hook..
DRedick8 16 Jun 1997#370782
I bet you WILL care when the authorities find you and (likely) confiscate your computer equipment and press charges against you for software piracy. You didn't cover your tracks very well, making it VERY easy to find out from where the illegal post came from. I would be willing to bet that Papyrus has now sat up and taken notice. What the hell do you know about freedom!!! You obviously haven't participated in earning any of it. If Papyrus spends alot of money, time and hard work developing something, don't you think they should be *free* from thieves stealing it. Papy gets thier money the old fashioned way, they earn it. The guys getting these tracks for nothing are getting a free ride from those of us who work for our money and pay for our products. Your not welcome! I am obviously a tad dense, but could you please explain how this company is screwing you? Are they making you purchase their products? Do they make you keep them once you have? Well, personally, I think NASCAR 2 is about the most thorough driving sim on the market (speaking for myself). A patch was released to incorporate those who demanded a save race feature, and to tweak some general bugs; it had a couple of glitches, so another follow-up patch was issued. I don't see how you're "being screwed." A.) You can always take it back or return to Sierra if you don't like it and/or, B.) You can always send in suggestions about what you'd like to see changed in any subsequent versions of the program. If your ideas seem to speak for the masses, then I'm sure every effort will be made to incorporate them into the next product. FWIW, I completed an entire championship season against 100% AI in the game, and I didn't "get screwed" by any aspect of the game. God Bless, Steve

This is against the law. You should realize this before you do it. It's too bad the damage you will do to Papyrus and the track owners as well as to yourself. Your type of flagrant law breaking makes it tougher and tougher for papyrus to get the licenses they need to make a better sim. It makes it harder on all of us that want to see better products. Now because a simple converter was released, we have a serious proliferation of illegal tracks. This is serious and I hope you have the financial resources to be able to retain good legal counsel. My guess is that you have already been warned and if not, you will be very shortly. Of course from your post you already seem to think that Papy will sue you. I for one certainly hope they do. It's because of this immature attitude that BB&B Track Editing Project won't release a single tool to anyone. So Sim Racing fans. Let this jerk know your displeasure with him.
