NASCAR 2 AI pitting and caution problems

A user complained that the NASCAR 2 AI's behaviour in the pits and on pace laps was broken, drawing replies that ranged from workarounds to insults. Papyrus's Charlie Heath said fixing AI pitting was beyond the scope of the patch, which instead made the player's car immune to damage while pitting, and that AI improvements would come in a future product. Others agreed that better AI should be the top priority for NASCAR 3.

I wish all of you would get together and *** about the pitting problems in N2 like you have with the converter conflict. If we could get this kind of turn out Papyrus would have to do something about it. Am I the only one in the world with pitting problems? I mean come on the pitting SUX in N2 and so far I believe I'm the only one ( at least that I've seen post from anyway ) who has publicly protested. Here I go ***ing again huh? Well Damn it Papyrus fix our pitting AI and I will shut up.
Honestly, I've never once had a serious problem pitting in N2, and though I have seen a few posts on here, it hasn't been as prevalent a problem as alot of other items.... personally if you know something is going to happen, why don't you take it into account? I mean if pitting under a caution why not jsut slow down ahead of time? its not like you'll lose your place...and if its under green they aren't stopping on the track I assure you...if they are its something much more than jsut a simple patch situation, because i've never seen it. Why throw a fit and complain when simply slowing down ahead of time will help? they know of the problem, and you might even see a fix in a future patch... *shrug* just seems a bit obvious to me...maybe I'm lost. <snip> : <snip> Ok so would you like to enlighten me on how : to straighten out the screwed up pace lap when the cars get all : stretched out Einstien. Try using your chrome horn on the car in front of you. If you give him a nudge he will usually get the idea and speed up to catch the field. When he speeds up the rest of the track just might too. -- **************************** Michael E. damnit grow up. If you are pitting under a caution, try put your damn car as close to the wall as possible, and try to not get in front of the sign by too much. Also make less car on the track so u can have more room Wish you can grow up sometime, use your head a little, you will find a solution
Skarekrow-> 21 May 1997#367493
Would someone please translate what the hell he just said? You dont have a clue pal. Ok so would you like to enlighten me on how to straighten out the screwed up pace lap when the cars get all stretched out Einstien.

There are a few different kind of pitting/yellow flag problems. 1) multi-player (dialer) if you pull into your pit stall, an AI may pull right into you and ruin your race (if you have damage turned on). (I believe the patch deals with this problem) 2) AI cars on the track stopping (or slowing greatly) so not to pass cars going into the pits. This problem is tolerable since you know it is going to happen and caution will prevent damage to your vehicle. 3) Cars stopping almost immediately after crossing the start finish line when racing back under yellow. If you have to race not to loose your position its possible the quick stopping of AI cars can eliminate your ability to safely deal with the situation. 4) AI cars occasionally don't line up tightly during yellow flag laps. I've heard there are some things you can do (while driving) to effect the AI cars in a positive way. 5) There has to be more.... So before you tell someone they are "crazy" make sure you know which problem they are refering to, and you know the solution. mykey

>Honestly, I've never once had a serious problem pitting in N2, and >though I have seen a few posts on here, it hasn't been as prevalent a >problem as alot of other items.... Most of the problems I see with pitting is in Multiplayer although it does happen in single player as well. For one thing the pace lap gets all screwed up. I.E this morning I'm running about 19th the cars in front of me will not catch up to the rest of the field. The pace car is behind us (along with the leaders ) what do you do in this situation. You cant pass the cars in front of you (black flag) and if you slip a little your going a lap down. So you see it's more than the actual slowing down part. when the cars stop on the track like that they***everything up. Because In my opinion I would have rather had a working Pitting AI than a save Game feature. It's simply Priorities you know? It seems to me that a really important part of the sim has been put on the back burner. " Ok Great Thanks for the Patch Papyrus I can now save a game but I cant make a freaking pit stop without getting creamed." he says with sarcasm. I'ts just a little obvious to me as well

First of all I dont think asking for better pitting AI is ***ing considering the fact that the existing AI is as bad as it is. Secondly If I'd wanted to race in an arcade situation I'd have bought Daytona U.S.A at least it works like its supposed to. Why dont you read the back of your Nascar2 box (very top) it reads "Authentic racing from qualification to championship." Well now damn it thats what I expect. Hell I payed $50 for it And Papyrus has repeatedly ignored my E-Mail and post about this matter. They will not even acknowledge the fact that they know about it. So until they do I will not stop protesting.
<snip> Regardless of what others might say, I'm in total agreement here. This problem really didn't bother me until one fine day at 'Dega. Lap 160 or so of a 100% race. First caution of the day comes out, and all the leaders pit. I get out first, and catch the line of lap cars cruising around behind the pacecar. All of a sudden a huge line of cars streams by down low, and next thing I know I'm in 8th with the spotter yelling at me to pass a car way ahead of me and screaming at me to stay behind the car right in front of me. The pacecar is at least a quarter lap ahead of me, and I can't hardly bump a line of six or seven cars to convince them to catch up, and I sure as heck can't convince the game that I should be in first like I came out of the pits. Long story short, two laps after green a car spins in front of me, in heavy traffic, and the AI checks up with god-like quickness. My mangled car shortly thereafter slides from the banking. Skarekrow has a damn good point here. I've better things to do than drive two hours, the race virtually in my pocket, then be wrecked because of some bad coding in the game. The only reason I ever use the save game feature is during yellows to be sure something like this doesn't happen. And I'm sure one of you will find reason to yell at me over my little statement. I can here it now: 'If you don't want to waste two hours, don't do such long races.' <aggravated sigh> Like I said, all I ever save for is to be sure something like that doesn't happen. I shouldn't *have* to bump them to encourage them to form up proper, and, well, don't get me started. Here here. -Nick Sure, flame me if you want. It'll prove something, but I don't think it'll be what you think.
I'm not going to flame you, but rather let you think about something...what do you think all those winston cup drivers feel when they drive for 2-3 hours only to get caught up in a rec because they couldn't slow down as fast? they dont complain that the other drivers have some unfair advantage, they accept it as a part of the race...it happens...its frustrating but it happens... maybe the pitting needs to be looked into, maybe not, but I still say its not as serious a coding problem as you make it out to be, or alot more people WOULD be talking about it...I will say that the AI braking ability is a bit too strong although sometimes it does seem to fit nicely... alot of times its not that they break any better, but that they react alot faster than we do, they dont have that wonderful thing called reaction time to deal with..... just my thoughts... If the "unfair" advantage is based on the fact thay they have different specs for thier car, then you bet they are going to complain. If I am close behind the AI car, racing to the SF line and my reaction time let's say 1 second slowed. Then why can the AI stop in 1 second, and my car takes about 4+ seconds to stop. It's more than reaction time. Why can AI cars "buy" braking systems that are far superior to those that my sponsor can "buy". The other day I exited the pits almost even with an AI car (at Tally). When we reached the SF line the AI car went from 90 mph to 170 mph in 2 seconds. This is restrictor plate racing isn't it? I know it's just a quirk in the software, but if the same thing happened to a Winston Cup driver, I know an inquiry would take place. To me the sim has two purposes: 1) Simulate a Winston Cup race with "real" Winston Cup drivers. In this area it's "just" a game. Not perfect, but a damn good game. 2) Allow human competition. Acting as the race officials. Hopefully when racing without the AI the quirks will disappear. While I haven't yet raced via IPX, or Hawaii, I have raced head 2 head with another human. If we include the AI cars, a quirk usually gets in the way. However when we remove the AI, the racing is much cleaner. Except for human error (we are still learning) the sim seems to work 100%. mykey
>And Papyrus has repeatedly ignored my E-Mail and post about this >matter. They will not even acknowledge the fact that they know about >it. So until they do I will not stop protesting. We're aware of the problem with AI pitting; working on it was beyond the scope of what could be done in the patch, so instead we put in the workaround so that your car cannot be crashed into or damaged while you're pitting. How stupid can you be man. The post you were refering to was posted 4 days ago on the 20th of may. You tacked you senseless flame onto the reply from Charlie Heath/Papyrus I suggest that you read his reply again in which he does acknowledge there's a problem. If you'll look up to the very top of your monitor screen you'll see a help tab, USE IT when you see something in blue it doesn't mean I posted it again this should have given you a clue when you see RE in front of the header. Let me ask you this by the way why do you have a problem with someone else getting a fix for the Sim. I mean I didn't have the lurching problem but I didnt condemn everyone complaining about. If you like the Pitting AI then fine but dont tell us to shutup because we desire a fix. Again I say why dont you read the Back of your N2 box (very top) it reads " Authentic racing from qualification to championship" Considering you are the one that started the Boycot thread you probably dont even have a box. Just a guess but I'm sure you didnt even pay for N2 so why dont you let those of us who did get the fix we need.

Charlie, I appreciate you replying to this matter. If its beyond the scope of a patch can you please tell us what Papyrus plans to do?

I can't argue with that (And I'm glad I'm getting a reasonable relpy that doesn't include yelling and screaming <G>), but I in turn must point out that I shouldn't have been racing in the middle of the pack to start with. I should have been looking at clean track. I have no problems whatsoever if, say, I over-rev the engine and blow it, or if I come up on a wreck and can't avoid it, or even if someone drifts up and puts me in the wall... That's racing, or so they say. It just really irked me on that one instance because I shouldn't have *had* to deal with all the traffic when I got out of the pits way ahead of everyone else. Well, it doesn't happen all that often (at least to me), and that could be why nobody says anything. And I am pretty sure that they brake faster than we do, as well as the reaction time thing. At the 'Glen goung into the inner loop I've started braking very early (Before any of the braking markers) to avoid a wreck only to end up in the corner first anyway, causing a mess. I dunno, maybe I didn't have the pedal to the floor, but I'm pretty sure on this. Try starting in the middle of the pack at this track and see how ridiculous it is trying to get through the first corner on the green. I've almost given up racing there unless I get the pole. And there's mine What? A worthwile thread? Impossible!
what? worthwhile thread? you've GOT to be kidding. But it does seem nice to have a coherant conversation without all the insults a drudgery, although an earlier post of mine about indy cars is going to get me flamed to a crips i'm sure ;) SHOooooooooo Shop and Compare.......
