Requests for an anti-aliasing patch for NASCAR 2 Rendition

Rendition card owners complained that NASCAR Racing 2's 3D version lacked the anti-aliasing that made IndyCar Racing II look so good, and many said they had bought the card only for N2. Posters reported that Sierra had said there were no plans for anti-aliasing and urged others to lobby for it. Some hoped instead for a 3Dfx Voodoo version or better support in NASCAR 3.

Hi,I just wondered if anyone knows if there is a patch for "anti-aliasing" in Nascar2.I have a 3DBlaster video card .Any help would be helpful.

How do you know this? If this is true I would strongly recommend nobody purchase a Rendition based board. Voodoo based cards offer much better performance than Verite cards and they cost less now than Rendition boards. If Sierra can't find their way to support all the features of its own graphics card why should anyone else. These ***ing software companies have got to be the stupidest, laziest, and greediest bunch of no good SOBs there are. I find it quite ironic that a company that sells its own Rendition card will be the one who kills it. Nascar2 and Indycar2 are the only real reasons to own a Rendition video card at all because everything else runs better on Voodoo graphics. If Sierra is planning a windows version of Nascar2 then there is still no reason to own a Rendition card because it would most likely run on Voodoo cards as well at even higher speeds. Sierra you make me sick. I have owned my Reactor for almost 6 months now and what do I have to show for it. One(!) driver update for a brand new card in 6 months, Diamond looks like Matrox compared to this. A couple of fairly decent ports of some aging games. An extremely mediocre Nascar2 which pales in comparison to the year and a half old Indycar2 in graphics quality and performance. It's too bad I don't think Quake is the greatest game in the world or I might not care so much. Well that's about all there is, no new games worth mentioning for months now. I'm glad I got my Reactor for the $149 introductory price. I think I'll return the Screamin 3D I got last month just because Sierra made some money from it. I think it's about time somebody stood up and took some heat about this, anybody got the balls? Anyone at Rendition still lurking here? Papyrus? Dana Bailes

I agree. Indycar looks 100x better with it so whynot find someone who can do that work. -- -------------------------------------------------------- Brian Motisko 717-876-5536 http://members.aol.com/bmotisko/private/index.htm --------------------------------------------------------

Julian: Dana layin the hammer: R: Wow this is from one of my racing buddies. He's a real diehard Nascar man, I'm personally shocked he would go this far. But I agree with him 100% that there should be a upgrade for the Rendition card and EVEN BIGGER a VOOOO port. Come'on Adam, Charlie and Ken. You got the best racing games, now take them to their graphical limits for today. I coulda sworn there is a guy at 3DFX that would be more than happy to do the port. Or is the voodoo only getting Silicoln Motor Raceway's Nascar? N2 could use AA and another 5-10 frames per. OR up to your older ICR2 standards. I thought Nascar 2 was supposed to be the reason to buy a Rendition (which it is) but I thought it woulda backed it up with the best gfx and performance which it doesn't. Yeah I think it's time to hear from Rendition on this as well. Are they still alive? PS So far Charlie your multiplayer patch is holding up pretty well!! Bittersweet, Q.B.M.

As much as I am a NASCAR fan and an avid N2 player/enthusaist, I have to agree that ICR2 is 5x better as far as graphic performance and look goes. It does really kinda suck that there will be no AA or further updates to the rendition version of N2........ Well I have been very pleased with Papy's games for the sheer luck in there efficent *** engine, dynamics and awesome playability. I give my thumbs up on that aspect of it. I do however dont understand why Papy would stop such a graphically enhanced feature as anti-aliasing. This feature gives a much more realistic touch and adds triple fold to the overall "look" of its real-life counter parts. Its undesirable when a company offers such a cool feature in an older game and doesnt add it in their newer games. I thought for sure Papy would have added this feature for the sheer fact of the whole NRO thing! Could it be that Sierra is doing the same ole' thing again?!! -DG-

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!! Reading all the other posts in this string, It would seem we are all in agreement. I too think Papy, er, Sierra should support an AA patch. Lets SEE what the Screamin 3D (Rendition) can do, cause 3DFX and Power VR are starting to, or have...Killing you. N2 and Indy are the only reasons I got a rendition. All other games I use the 3DFX!!! Come on rendition!!! Get with it. You got the hardware. Make the most of it. Mr Bill
: > Hi,I just wondered if anyone knows if there is a patch for : > "anti-aliasing" in Nascar2.I have a 3DBlaster video card .Any help : > would be helpful. : > : What the hell is anti-aliasing ????? : Please explain. First to answer the first question, No, there is no anti-aliasing patch, and there is not much likelihood of there being one in the future. Anti-aliasing is a method of smoothing out the "jaggies". As you may be aware, a straight horizontal line or one perpendicular to the horizontal can be displayed on the computer screen as a "smooth" line of pixels. However, whenever a line strays from these axes, the pixels are "stepped" and "ragged". Anti-aliasing is a "cosmetic" approach to "blend" the jagged edges. It involves "blending" in the pixel colors of the stepped pixels of the line with the background. It makes lines and curves more appealing to the eye and less stark. -- **************************** Michael E. They push the > Rendition card, for which there is only one good game really for it, > ICR2.. N2.. is "half-assed".. I wasn't aware that they had stated this in the past. The only thing I remember on the topic was Sierra said that resources were not a problem. We all know this is total bullshit. I think Tomb Raider and Quake are also fine Rendition games as well but it has been 4(!) months now since anything new. I had some hope when RRedline was announced but nothing has come of it so far. I have to believe that the Rendition Verite is dead until I am proven wrong. I won't buy another one and I wouldn't recommend that anyone else does either. Buy a 200MMX instead. They don't have to catch up with 3dfx, they have good hardware as it is. I have been very happy with my Reactor, the problem is Nascar2 is substandard and nothing new has been released since last year. Unless the V2000 will make Nascar2 run at a constant 30fps with Indycar2 smoothness there is no way in hell I will buy one. If something isn't done for Nascar2 to make it better I won't buy another Sierra or Rendition product again. If Nascar2 sucks why should I expect Nascar3 to be any better? I think maybe some of the management as well. They don't fix the product they just sell you a new version. They fixed the handling bugs and hand of god bugs in the Hawaii beta but they didn't fix them in the real Nascar1 because it would have made it better than nascar2. Besides the new tracks and the network support there are really no improvements in Nascar2, just fluff. A couple of patches to Nascar1 would have been just fine, the game is still selling even with Nascar2 on the shelves. The lack of news from Papyrus is enough to show that they are in turmoil right now. The GPL and Soda news is just to distract us. There has to be a way for us to show Sierra and Papyrus that we are tired of getting screwed. The only way I know is with my money. Dana Bailes

Now hold on, back up the tuna truck!!! Don't tell me I just wasted 200 bucks on a Screamin 3D (Which is due at my doorstep on Wednesday) for a higher frame rate? Hell, I could just leave all my detail off. Why in the world would Papy or ahem $ierra make such a cool game (Bugs ignored) and leave out the AA feature with a Rendition card? Hi Chris, Brian, Bill, Don't get me wrong on this, but the past few threads have been about the lack of AA in N2, and the problem with cash outlay for the card...Cost (and AA) aside, you all bought the Rendition for a single title?!! And to let you all in on something, IMO no one has gotten the 3D version of ICR2 for free...since it only comes with the card (Cyrix patch exempted). Kinda' like the ad that says 'buy one, get one free'...More or less each cost you 50%. You paid for the card, hence you paid for the included CD. Sorry...I'll step off my soapbox. Yes, I bought the Rendition card for Nascar2 only. What other reason is there to own one? With the exception of Indycar2 every other 3D title is available and runs better on a Voodoo card. I know many people who only have a Rendition card to play Nascar2. So are you saying that you bought a Rendition card because it came with Indycar2? <g> I already owned Indycar so I prefer to think that it was free rather than think I payed for it twice. Dana Bailes

Yes actually Nascar2 is the only game besides nascar1 that I play. Since its the only game I play i seen that the card was supposed to make it great like icr2. then ya put nascar on it and its like wow what a shitty diff. Come on Sierra/Papyrus Get on the ball with this already!!! -- -------------------------------------------------------- Brian Motisko http://members.aol.com/bmotisko/private/index.htm --------------------------------------------------------

Hi, Um...this might sound stupid, but could someone please tell me what anti-aliasing is and what it has to do with a rendition card?? I own a reactor 3d card, (or what ever the new name is) and I'd like to know what I'm missing, if anything at all. Thanks, Matt

<snip> Yes, that's the ONLY reason I bought the Rendition card. Do you find this hard to believe? I mean, nothing else on the limited list of games ported for Rendition interests me. I guess if you find it hard to believe that I spent a mere $176 for a video card just to make Nascar2 look better, you'd really have a ball flaming me for the other (and much more expensive) upgrades I invested in trying to get the most I can out of this sim. <BWG> If I wasn't into this sim as much as I am, I would've waited for awhile to see where this video market is going to end up at......but, since there is something out now that makes my sim of choice run much better, I was willing to put out the $$$$ for it. Just wish the AA was included in the sim that caused me to purchase it anyway. Being one of the few games that comes Rendition ready out of the box, I expected to see the AA in it, particularly since Sierra manufactures one of these cards themselves. Anti-aliasing is a graphics effect which smoothes the jagged lines which are common in most computer games because of the limited resolutions on high-resolution displays. It has a very dramatic effect on image quality especially on driving games such as Indycar2. IMO, Nascar2 would benefit even more from such a feature. If you want to see the effect load Indycar2 on you Reactor and go out on a oval track like Michigan. Stop somewhere you won't get hit and press Alt-A which toggle anti-aliasing on and off. Look closely at the edges of the track lines and walls as you toggle it on and off. The difference is amazing and the main benefit is it makes it easier to see farther down the track. This should now be a mandatory feature, especially in Sierra products since they sell a video card which supports it. Dana Bailes

<< the past few threads have been about the lack of AA in N2, and the problem with cash outlay for the card...Cost (and AA) aside, you all bought the Rendition for a single title?!! >> Marc, To answer your question simply, "Yes." The only reason that I bought the rendition card was for N2 (it was a birthday present to myself). Of course I hoped that future software would support it too, but at the time the only thing I was hoping for was REALLY fast graphics for N2. And while the frame rate is good until you get in heavy traffic, where it drops, the lack of full support for the card (AA in particular, transparent smoke also) is disappointing. It just seems strange that the only really good support for the card is the title that comes with the card (screen shots of which helped to sell me on buying it) and the production software doesn't provide all the features the card it capable of, and that I think we were all expecting. It's a shame, but I guess this just proves the old axiom "Buyer beware". Regards, Chris Patrick

I have 4 rendition cards just for Nascar 2. That's all I use it on. Yep almost seems like a trick. Put a killer graphical app in the box ICR2 and then all other ports thereafter are substandard of that. I always thought it was supposed to get better as time went on. Q.B.M.

>Yes, that's the ONLY reason I bought the Rendition card. Do Same feelings here. To even take it one step further, I would be quick to purchase one of the "3dfx" cards if I were to here of a port of Nascar2 that actually was worthy of fully "showing off" this chipset as I was so impressed with ICR2 on "rendition". I won't go as far to say that I am totally disappointed with N2. Just a little let down. Ron L. Home of the SSC http://www3.pgh.net/~lazer/ For Nascar2 & Winston Cup Fans!
: yeah sierra did state that there was no plans for aa so i guess everyone : including myself who bought the card for rendition got screwed. I thought the following was interesting. Found it on Sierra's web page in the Technical Support for 3D products: tech support screamin 3d Re: Will we ever get rid of the jaggies?? from Morghan (SierraTech), Tue May 13 10:53:00 US/Pacific 1997 In-reply-to Will we ever get rid of the jaggies?? There is talk about doing a Rendition make over on the game. Right now, from the rumors I've heard, the artist that did ICR2 is being courted to redo Nascar2. This is a rumor about a discussion so I don't know if it will happen or not. I think it is something that the team wants to do if it can be budgeted, I am going on rumor here though. I talked to some producers about this and put in our $.02 though. I let it be known that there is a demand for an overhaul like ICR2 got. Right now I don't know if it will materialize or not, I hope so though. -- **************************** Michael E. As much money as Sierra stands to make from NRO, I would think that a Rendition overhaul could be bugdeted (should have been there to start with); but sadly I think the last statement will hold true. I may be pessimistic, but I'll never be disappointed! :) Chris

And just to add my opinion for a AA version of N2, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE! If it has to wait for N3, well, darn!, but at least we finally got it. (And here's hoping N3 is Rendition Ready!!!!!)
