Ditto. Although mine happens rarely.
NASCAR 2 v1.02 patch causes sudden steering jerks
After the NASCAR Racing 2 patch, many users reported the car intermittently jerking to the right, along with confusion over which version to download. Some fixed it by deleting calibration files and recalibrating from the main menu, while others suspected the Cyrix fix or Windows 95. Papyrus's Charlie Heath acknowledged the reports and explained his earlier work tracking down the HOG bug.
With Charlie Heath (Papyrus)
Automated summary.
This is to touch base with anybody else who might be experiencing the
same problems that I did not want to find. Some are minor. One is a
disaster.
MAJOR- When running around the track the car takes a *** jump to
the right then returns. This is intermittent. To make sure this was
not a potentiometer problem I loaded my old exe file and tested each
one 4 times. The old exe was smooth but the patched one was jerky
every time. This was easiest to see on Talladega (not a track problem)
This might vary somewhat from computer to computer but the problem is
there now with the new nascar2exe file
MINOR- The race dates are now reversed ex: 2/16/97 to 16/2/97
MINOR The patch bombs out trying to edit the Nite C***te track
The original was installed off the CD so the patch does
not like the date stamp. 11/26/96
MINOR My setup.exe has a date stamp of 11/25/96 which did not match
the dates given by papy for the 2 versions I ran both
and tested each same results
The save game worked great but with the car lurching to the right the
patch is not useable at this time
This is not to be critical but we need to bring these things to light
or were not going to get any problems fixed So save your flames for
the fireplace Some of us would like the sim to work properly
PS I have already sent this to SIERRA they have a message board,
QA dep't, and someone to address your problems to. They might be
able to help with PAPY, Who knows?? www.sierra.com
Well, it definately is not a track problem hence it happens with almost
all the tracks at some point. This problem definately needs fixing because
the game is unplayable in this state. I loaded up Michigan and was running
for about 2 laps and BOOM I do a Ricky Craven (*** jerk to the right)
and hit the retaining wall hard enough to severly damage the wheel and
bend the sheet metal. This probably would not be a big deal if damge was
turned off, although if a car was next to you it would be an instant
accident. I don't know *why* this is occuring, but it's not good. After
waiting for quite awhile for a patch....I had absolute faith it would
probably need another. Did these guys even test the patch? This bug is
too obvious. Oh well, wish I had waited to patch the game....because the
way it is now is unexceptable. Oh well, I can always *pretend* I'm
Jimmy Spencer :)
<SNIP>
MINOR point: The readme.txt file that comes with the patch tells you to
look at the date of the setup.exe file on the CD (on your D: drive for
example), not in the nascar2 folder on your hard drive. The setup.exe in
your Nascar2 folder has the 11/25 date, but you need to look at the date
of the setup.exe file on the CD to determine which version of NASCAR2
you have so that you can pick the correct patch to download and apply.
I haven't experienced this yet on my setup, but thanks for the heads-up.
I have original NASCAR2 version 1.00 BTW. And a minimum install.
This is not to be critical, but we need to READ THE INSTRUCTIONS THAT
COME WITH A PATCH, and/or any product we purchase before we complain
about its shortcomings. For that matter, the version determination
procedure is posted plainly at Sierra's patch download page as well.
Are you using a minimum or maximum install? What is your system setup?
Maybe if we can gather enough information on this problem from people
who are experiencing it, and post it here, then we can pass it on to
Papy and or/Sierra.
Just my $0.02
Ran a 20% length race here right after installing the patch with no
problems
I ran the race mentioned above plus several practice laps at Martinsville,
Talledega, Bristol, and Atlanta, and never experienced what you did. Did
you recalibrate after installing the patch? The only problem I had was
recopying the original files over some of the edited files supplied by some
of the nice folks on this group. So far the patch works great, and I can't
wait to run my first full-length race at C***te. It may take me a month
to do it though, but what the hey? Thanks Papy, for the save game, and
now, a GREAT sim!

turn" blip. We experience it with direct modem as well as thru the internet
connections. The new "bump in the road" blip is ok, but I must say I don't
like the sudden right turn one. This isn't a old software problem, this is
a problem related to the new patch.
Of course the patch was tested (though to be honest some things like the
date format can go unnoticed), but I have yet to experience any jerkyness
whatsoever in the steering.

Someone else reported this problem to me and was able to fix it by
re-calibrating the joystick interface.

It's nice you can pretend it's a BUMP in the track but after running
30 laps at dega and having the car lurch into a car next to me I kiss
the 30 laps goodbye after a bounce off the wall. I'm trying to live
with this problem that seems to be pretty common but sometimes it's
too much, especially when the patch was supposed to make the sim
better not worse.

After reading about this problem I ran a 50% length race at Talladega
and never once had this "jump to the right" occur. Have you tried a
reinstalling NASCAR2 fresh and then patching it? Otherwise it may be
a hardware issue. I'm running on a 200MHz Pentium Pro with an
Intergraph Reactor (running the DMA version) and a SB32 PNP. I'm
running in Windows95 with an ECCI wheel/pedal combo (also haven't had
any problems with the wheel since the patch either). Unrelated
hardware installed in my system: Adaptec 2940U PCI SCSI card and a
Yamaha Waveforce card.

Well I let N2 gather dust while I awaited the patch and moved on to
other things. I haven't experienced the "jerking" to the right, but it
does seem that steering is not as "clean, smooth and precise" as I recall
it. I wonder if this isn't a side affect of the "cyrix" fix. I've
noticed that not many people experiencing this haven't posted information
on the system and whether they are running in DOS or Win95. Also
whether they had the 1.00 N2 or the 1.01. Providing this kind of
information is how Papyrus can quickly find the problem and a solution.

has anyone tried to cal wheel in both win95 and in N2. Also I'v heard that
you can delete the calibrating files and start over. (not sure which files
) I patched ver 1.0 and my T2 works great.
Sorry I forgot to mention that I deleted the Calib.val and
controls.cfg prior to recalibrating , any way my controls (T2)
work perfectly now.

Michael,
I also believe that this "pot bug" is the result of the Cyrix fix. I
experienced no problems with the game before the patch but now am
having
problems with the steering. The sudden "jerk" to the right is not a
constant happening, it only occurs to me about every 9 laps and not in
the same place on the track. It could happen while I'm running low or
high in the turns, it could happen on the straights I just never know
when.
Before I installed the patch, I made sure I was going to install the
correct one by double checking everything. I never changed any files in
N2 so I figured this would be an easy fix, not so. Following the
instruc-
tions in the Readme I had the 3.2.2.0 version of N2. The "naspat0"
would
always quit loading at the nchrllte.dat. I deleted N2 and started over,
again I would get the same result. After another fresh install I
patched
N2 with with the file for version 3.2.2.1, this file worked and now I
have the "pot bug". Now, the "pot bug" could be the result of the Cyrix
fix or it could be because I installed the patch for 3.2.2.1, which I
don't have, but this patch is the only one that would work.
No laughing but I have a Packard Bell P60 with 72 megs of 70ns
non-parity
RAM, Intergraph Reactor and Win95 not OSR2. Steering device is a T2
connected to port on Sound Blaster, settings at 220 IRQ 5 DMA 1. I run
N2 through the RENDDMA batch file.

I cannot agree that the "jump" makes the patch unusable.
Although I have experienced it on the tracks that I have raced on since
installation (Talladega, Martinsville and Michigan) I became used to the
movement and treated it as a "bump" on the track! I have noticed that it
occurred more frequently at Martinsville than at Talladega or
Michigan.....something to do with the length of the track?
Incidentally...system is bog-standard intel P-100, 24Mb RAM, Sierra
Screamin' 3-D card, T/master T1 wheel/pedal and I run Nascar2 (version 1)
by doing a "restart in DOS mode" from Win95.
The game has a full install and no other "patches" or "fixes" were applied
prior to installing this patch.

My situation has been networked in '95.

This won't do it in every case since I recalibrate all the time.
Q.B.M.
The patch for 1.0 won't get past the "NCHRLTTE.DAT" file and says error,
original file not found. Even after I copied the file again from the
CD. Anyone know why?

I may have experienced it "once" out of the couple hundred laps at
Talledega. It felt like I ran over a beer can, or that I got a gently
tap on the right rear quarter panel. However, knock-on-sheet-metal,
I'm one of the lucky ones and haven't had this problem.
For all of those who say Papy didn't test out the patch. Come on, get
real. They tested it. They just didn't have the right combination of
hardware configurations to find this problem. Just think about how many
different machines they would have to have to represent all of the
combintions out there. And then all of the man hours on all of those
machines.
However, Papy still has a good track record for tracking down these
problems. Look what happened when they finally decided to put out the
effort still the "hand of god". While they may not always sit on the
pole and finish first, they always finish in the top 10! Well, they
may have dropped out of the race with ICR2, now that they don't have a
future for CART sims. :-(

The date problem that you are talking about is probably not a glitch. If
this program is marketed in other countries (where they use the
day/month/year method. It makes more sense to me) it was probably done on
purpose. Just my comment. I haven't had any of the problems you guys have
had though.

: As for the HOG bug ... you might or might not recall, but that one was
: pretty much a personal crusade for me, which I solved only by enlisting
: assistance from a few hundred folks testing on Hawaii. I believe it will
: be easier to get the joystick problems resolved than it was to track down
: the HOG bug, though I can't promise it'll come as quick as you or I would
: like it to ...
Thanks for the might crusade to stamp HOG! No More Hog! No More Hog!
As to a "fix" coming "quickly", it never has and it never will. We (and
all of the folks at Papy) wanted it the day before yesterday. ;-) I'm
really sorry so many people have this one real annoying problem with the
patch. It seems to have left a very bad taste in some users' mouth.
For those, just keep in mind, it was not an Oliver Stone ***. It
was just God getting even for having had his "Hand" controlled by the
Papy Gang!
