SciTech Display Doctor 5.3a adds Verite support

Eric Busch noted that SciTech's Display Doctor 5.3a added support for the Rendition Verite chip. Most users found no frame-rate gain in NASCAR Racing 2 or Quake on Rendition cards, though it added extra VESA modes and helped some other cards. Rendition NT drivers were said to be in alpha testing.

No one else has mentioned it here, so I guess I will. SciTech just released version 5.3a of it's popular UniVBE program, Display Doctor, which now boasts support for the Verite chip. You can download a 21-day fully functional demo, but you have to send off for the full version. See what happens when you don't register your shareware? When I used Univbe(5.2 I believe) with Nascar2 it seemed to speed up quite a bit and my card is Vesa2.0 compliant. -- There is no problem we can't ignore if we really put our minds to it. GO #2! Mullins Motorsports Inc. http://www.***tron.com/~ddmj

Try the windows version. It contains the dos version as well. I have been using the SSD5.3a with my Intergraph video card but I have not noticed any improvment in Nascar 2.
How do measure the frame rate while running N2? Thanks, Brad

The original need for UniVBE was that many video cards did not have VESA compliant extensions. Some that did had "bugs" in the firmware implementation of VESA. The Intergraph has VESA 2.0 compliant code already. Unless SciTech can create EXTREMELY SUPER EFFECIENT code, it would make sense that the code in the hardware can interact with the card faster than a TSR program. Unless there is some other feature that the DisplayDoctor can provide, I think it's overkill to install it for the Intergraph. -- **************************** Michael E. I would agree, and add that this program is also overkill for the Screamin'3D card. I got NO improvement in either vQuake or Nascar2. I even ran Quake benchmarks and saw no improvement. Not even .1 fps increase. Perhaps the "Doctor" only fixes and speeds up graphics when you have a true problem hindering max. performance. My card, evidently previously well-configured, saw no performance gain. -- Matt Lewis
Without Univbe Nascar 2 is nothing but a rare bunch of coleurs with my Herc. 128~ Frederik

While I am not sure about the intergraph, there is one HUGE need for the DisplayDoctor in the flight-sim arena. There is a new game called Flying Corps. If you run it in DOS and run UNIVBE, you are allowed to run other SVGA resolutions other than 640x480. Imagine how fast GP2 would be at 512x384 instead of 640x480. In Flying Corps it make the difference on a low end (P5-133) machine. So SDD can make a difference. However, I do not think GP2 will allow any resolutions other than 640x480 & 300x200. So we are screwed there :-) > -- > **************************** Michael E. I saw no improvement in VQuake or Nascar 2 with the new version of Univbe. The Quake timerefresh didn't show even .1 fps difference with 5.3a loaded or not. The Screamin 3D bios are tops according to Next-Generation magazine so I don't think that Univbe 5.3a is going to help out just yet. Just my opinion and according to my tests on a P90 with 24 Meg of EDO. Nascar 2 Simulation Shop [link lost in import: /~n9ldx]

5.3a works with my STB Velocity 3D, were as 5.3 did not. Makes quite a difference when i run it with fastvid. fastvid did not do much when i didn't have univbe installed! --Sam

I assume you are running this with a Reactor. When I benchmarked Sdd v5.3a with my Reactor (Duke Nukem 3D) my FPS went from 37 (Reactor onboard VESA BIOS) to 30 with SDD v5.3a. At that point, I didn't bother doing any more benchmarks. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This space intentionally left blank

>> No one else has mentioned it here, so I guess I will. SciTech just >> released version 5.3a of it's popular UniVBE program, Display Doctor, I got it and found no frame rate improvement for any games that I have. The only advantage this software offers is the lower-res SVGA mode. In 460x350 (?) duke3d gets 40fps and looks better than 320x200.

Anyone know if Display Doctor will provide NT drivers for the Screamin' 3D card? Or does anyone know anywhere else to get them? -- Alison Hine
